24President’s Statementprovisional member<strong>The</strong>re were no new provisional members admitted during the year. Provisional members are graduate members who havecompleted the <strong>Institute</strong>’s examinations but have not fulfilled the practical experience requirement for admission as full members.Provisional members enjoy the full range of membership services and all other privileges of a qualified member with the exceptionof the right to vote in any general meeting of members, the right to carry out any duty reserved to members of the <strong>Institute</strong>, andthe right to hold himself out as a principal or partner of an accounting firm.certified financial accountants (CFIA)During the year, a total of 8 new members were admitted as <strong>Certified</strong> Financial Accountants (CFiA) members which brings thetotal CFiA members to 34 members as at December 31, <strong>2011</strong>.<strong>The</strong> CFiA members are mainly senior lecturers from accounting department of local public universities. <strong>The</strong>y were admitted underthe <strong>Institute</strong>’s special provisions for admission as CFiA.CFiA members have the same rights of membership as a <strong>Certified</strong> <strong>Public</strong> Accountant (CPA) with the exception of the right to seekelection to the MICPA Council, to attend general meetings of the <strong>Institute</strong> and to carry out any duty reserve to CPA members.CFiA members are entitled to access the full range of services provided by the <strong>Institute</strong> to members.services to members<strong>The</strong> Council is keenly conscious that members work in afast-changing environment. An important task of the Council isto constantly undertake initiatives to improve the servicesprovided to members of different segments of the membershipto ensure that CPAs in any sector preserve their technicalexcellence.This function is carried out with the help of committees andworking groups formed by the Council to identify and servethe various professional needs of different segments ofmembers in the performance of their work and services. Adhoc task forces are also appointed to address emerging issuesof concern. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> provides members with technicalupdates and guidance on all aspects of CPAs’ work coveringaccounting, auditing and assurance, taxation, and insolvencypractice. Continuing professional development (CPD) courseson a broad scope of topics are organised to assist memberskeep abreast of current changes in the work environment.In the last year report, it was reported that the <strong>Institute</strong> hasobtained a grant under the Services Sector CapacityDevelopment Fund from the <strong>Malaysian</strong> Industrial DevelopmentAuthority for the purposes of upgrading the <strong>Institute</strong>’s IT. Uponcompletion of upgrading the IT, new functionalities andinteractive features will be added to improve the method ofinformation delivery and communication between the <strong>Institute</strong>and members. <strong>The</strong> IT upgrading project was completed in April2012 and will be officially launched at the <strong>Institute</strong>’s <strong>Annual</strong>Dinner.
