70Setting Up YourMedical Store
CONSTRUCTING A MEDICAL STOREWhen constructing a medical store, considerthe following:Location: The store must be accessible to all the health facilitiesor units to be served. Ideally, a medical store should be locatedby itself on a separate lot to enhance security and minimizehuman and automobile congestion. Ensure road access forthe largest vehicle that might ever need to come to the store.Do not build the store close to trees with big roots. This cankill the tree, and conversely, trees with aggressive root systemscan damage the building’s foundation.Shading: Locate the store in an area where trees can be plantedto provide shade and offset high temperatures.4Trees: Although it is ideal to have trees planted for shade,check the condition of any trees already on the site regularly.Cut down any weak trees so they do not fall on the buildingduring inclement weather. Trim the other trees to avoidfalling branches.Drainage: Build the store on a raised foundation to allowrainwater to drain away from the store. If possible, locatethe store in an area on higher ground.71
