Safety boxesSafety boxes or sharps containers are puncture- <strong>and</strong>water-resistant, impermeable containers. When usedcorrectly, <strong>the</strong>y reduce <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> skin-puncture injuriesthat may spread disease.■ Do not recap syringes be<strong>for</strong>e disposal.■ Place <strong>the</strong> syringe <strong>and</strong> needle in <strong>the</strong> sharps boximmediately after use.■ Keep <strong>the</strong> sharps box where <strong>the</strong> injections are given.■ Do not overfill <strong>the</strong> sharps containers (about ¾ full).■ When ¾ full, close box tab completely to cover <strong>the</strong>opening <strong>and</strong> tape it shut.■ Store <strong>the</strong> box in a safe <strong>and</strong> securelocation until ready <strong>for</strong> finaldisposal.■ Do not empty <strong>and</strong> refillsharps boxes. Fill once <strong>and</strong>discard immediately.See annex 2 <strong>for</strong> more in<strong>for</strong>mationabout waste disposal.92
