Domaine Simon Bize
Red price per case in bond
Bourgogne Rouge les Perrières £145.00
This will be delicious to drink in the next few years but the wine also has grip and depth.
The aromas are sweet, juicy and dark, and the palate is vigorous and refreshing with dark,
brambly fruit notes. Drink from 2012.
Savigny Lès Beaune les Grands Liards £225.00
Attractive red berry fruits combine with delicate rose petal and violet notes which open out in
the glass. There are some detailed tannins and great purity of fruit with a hint of bramble apple
on the palate. There is vigour and intensity here and an elegant definition. Drink from 2014.
Savigny Lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes £275.00
The Les Talmettes vineyard is at the crest of the south facing hillside of Savigny and benefits
from full sunshine. The 2010 from Bize has juicy, red berry characters on the nose mingled with
notes of violets and wild flowers. The palate is full of succulent, red forest fruits which build in
intensity, with an exotic, dark and brooding floral character in the background. Drink from 2014.
Savigny Lès Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fournaux £275.00
Located on a gentle, south-west exposure, next to the famous Vergelesses and Lavières
vineyards, this is a very compelling and beautifully fragrant Fournaux with pure cherry and cassis
aromas. The tannins are beautifully integrated and the fruit is dark, juicy and refreshing with an
attractive note of herbs and spices on the finish. Drink from 2014.
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru les Guettes £295.00
Attractive, ripe, juicy forest fruits on the nose. Dark berry fruits combine with sweet savoury flavours
on the palate with a hint of wild herbs and brambles. This is an easy going, mouthfilling wine which
will be delicious young, but is has the capacity to age for five or more years. Drink from 2014.
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Vergelesses £330.00
6 magnums £340.00
A classic Vergelesses from Bize and consistently good, the 2010 has plenty of rich, dark fruits
on the nose and a sophisticated, balanced palate with supple, dark plum and raspberry fruit
characters. Just a hint of wild berries and herbs on the finish. This is an energetic wine with lots
of personality, like the man himself. Drink from 2015.
Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru £1,050.00
Consistently one of the finest examples from this vineyard, since Patrick’s purchase in 1995,
the 2010 seems to have reached another level of complexity. The nose bursts with bright
redcurrants and raspberry fruit characters, with a hint of bramble apple, while the palate shows
incredible energy and freshness, with juicy, mouthfilling and crunchy tannins – “croquant” but
also very complete and elegant. Drink from 2017.
Domaine Blain Gagnard
He has seen enough vintages to feel more than in control of his métier and his wines
display the same quiet confidence that you pick up quickly in their maker.
Jean-Marc Blain is never a man to over-egg the pudding but it wasn’t hard to detect
that he is pretty pleased with his 2010s. With more than thirty years of experience,
he has seen enough vintages to feel more than in control of his métier and his wines
display the same quiet confidence that you pick up quickly in their maker. Volumes are
of course down but the wines retain a natural, unhurried feel, impressing via their
restraint rather than shouting from the rooftops.
White price per case in bond
Puligny Montrachet £250.00
A delectable Puligny showing finesse and a friendly, approachable style. Notes of white peach
and subtle fragrances on the nose. The acidity is a feature here but cleansing rather than
aggressive and leaving a lasting sense of elegance and refinement. Drink from release.
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets £330.00
The class of the 1er Crus in Jean-Marc’s cellar, this shows raciness and precision with good
concentration of flavours on the palate and a clear mineral line. Crisp, linear and with abundant
finesse, this will be ideal in three or four years. Drink from 2014.
Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £425.00
Riper, notes of yellow fruit with a little gingerbread spice on the nose, this is a more generous
style but without ever losing its composure. Open and accessible already, showing its layers
of flavours and never hurrying along too vigorously. Balanced and calm and very typical to its
origins. Drink from 2015.
Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £475.00
Half the normal production this year with a little localised hail also taking yields down further.
Notes of almond and frangipani on the nose, a more delicate and subtle fragrance than
habitually seen for this wine. On the palate, there is excellent delineation with power starting
to build. All of the elements are there and this should develop over time into something rather
exciting. Drink from 2016.
Le Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £1,250.00
The king of the cellar, there is always a hush and a calm when this wine makes its entrance.
Why such reverence? It is hard to say but unmistakably, as the first aromas hit the senses, all
chatter stops and tasters are locked in deep concentration, trying to decipher every nuance and
nugget of information being offered up. As ever, this is a wine to savour slowly and a wine that
demands time and patience, both years in the cellar and hours at the table. A privilege to taste.
Drink from 2017.
