Chambolle Musigny 6 bottles £210.00
There are notes of white pepper and delicate spices on the nose of this silky Chambolle
alongside the crushed red fruits. On the palate there is more tension but also a pleasing
fleshiness and density meaning that pleasure is never far away. “Très Pinot, très Chambolle”
says Christophe. Drink from 2014.
Morey St Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière 6 bottles £250.00
10-15 years of hard work in this vineyard are now paying off with the new plantings slowly
making their impact and the improved management of the vines producing more charming
wines than the sometimes brutal versions of the past. Whilst it will never be as ‘well-behaved’
as Chambolle, there is certainly more flair and style here now without ever losing the wild fruit
character inherent to the site. Drink from 2015.
Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 6 bottles £345.00
After the foray to Morey, we are truly back in Chambolle with a nose of crushed raspberry,
pomegranate and roses. On the palate, the attack shows softness and a little richness before
the tannins kick in, unleashing the minerality underneath. As the wine is worked, you start to
sense its multiple layered structure, finely interwoven but always driven down to the rocks rather
than floating above them. Drink from 2016.
Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 3 bottles £330.00
Another change of register as we move to Gevrey, and bright cherry, soft plums and ripe
damson fruit announce themselves. On the palate, we stay on the fruit, with sweet strawberry
and a little spice just allowed to peek through. This is delicious and easy to like, uncomplicated,
friendly and hard to resist now. Drink from 2015.
Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 3 bottles £425.00
There is a lightness and laciness to this wine on first encounter that lulls you into a false sense
of simplicity. Quickly, you realise that there is far more to it, as the zip, verve and tension of the
wine capture you, juxtaposing the lightness with intensity and strong minerality. The wine is so
finely knitted together that you never notice the seams. This is serious, grown up, contemplative
wine. Drink from 2017.
Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru 3 bottles £360.00
By contrast, the Ruchottes is very much a wine of the soil, with spices and black pepper
abounding, and a roasted, smoky, animal fragrance. On the palate, the acidity is fresh and the
tannins are well handled, silky and rounded. Then the aromatic intrigue picks up again as you
are encouraged into the depths, to pick up more savoury and mineral notes. Always a strong
wine in the lineup and this is no exception. Drink from 2017.
Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 3 bottles £450.00
Deep and mysterious, this is a wine of inner strength and dark tones. It needs plenty of aeration
to release its aromas, seemingly reluctant to come out and play. A wild, savoury, animal character
is present, notes of clove and leather alongside the sour cherry fruit. This will require plenty
of time but with so much imbedded within, it promises to be a true classic from this famous
vineyard. Drink from 2018.
