Domaine Etienne Sauzet
Gerard Boudot is one of Puligny’s most gifted wine makers and the 2010s are
stunning wines.
In a domaine this size with such an exciting range of different Crus, it is always an
excellent opportunity to assess the quality of a vintage which by all accounts is quite
exceptional in Puligny, certainly at Sauzet. The harvest started a few days later than
normal on 17th September allowing the grapes to ripen to perfect levels of maturity,
whilst maintaining an incredible persistence and freshness. The Sauzet wines
combine this with an astonishing clarity and definition, perfectly expressing each
terroir. Yields were down as much as 40% in some vineyards so quantities will be
even more limited than normal.
Puligny Montrachet £TBC
An excellent Puligny with wonderfully fresh, citrus aromas and elegant, stone fruit characters
on the palate with a superb zesty, minerality on the finish. Consistently one of the most exciting
wines in the village, this wine is all about finesse and elegance. Drink 2013.
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Perrières £TBC
Pure, complex and multi-layered, this is a very expansive yet controlled wine. Green apple and
stone fruit flavours are balanced by an energetic, lively acidity. Exotic brioche and wild fig notes
give further depth but this is above all a very elegant wine with excellent persistence. Drink
from 2013.
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières £TBC
A wine which manages to combine power and persistence with great precision and energy.
Creamy, stone and spicy green apple fruit aromas are balanced by a piercing, citrus character,
while on the palate refreshing, chalky, mineral flavours intermingle with sweet, floral notes which
give charm and finesse. Drink form 2014.
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet £TBC
A heady and powerful wine with notes of citrus fruits and lemon peel zest intermingled with
lavender and exotic herbs on the nose and yet still very tight, focussed and mineral on the
palate – a wine which bursts at the seams with energy. Drink from 2014.
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Combettes £TBC
While this wine lacks the explosiveness of the Champ Canet on the nose, it conceals enormous
power, energy and depth. The palate is restrained and understated, with an elegant, refined
fruit character which merely hints at the greatness to come and confirms its undoubted class.
Drink from 2015.
Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru £TBC
A wine which opens with a flourish of citrus and lavender aromas with hints of white truffles.
Ripe citrus fruits on the palate give way to a mineral, chalky character on the finish combined
with great freshness. This is a powerful wine which manages to combine depth with great
elegance and complexity. Drink 2016.
Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru £TBC
A beautifully delineated and energetic wine with an incredibly tight mineral character
reminiscent of gun-flint and crushed oyster shells on the nose. Under this lies an exuberant, rich
citrus fruit character which will expressive itself in time. The Bâtard needs a few more years to
settle down but already shows great length and precision. Drink 2016.
Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru £TBC
A very complex and graceful wine which is remarkable for is elegance and balance. Delicate,
stone fruit aromas combine with exotic hints of acacia honey and figs. On the palate the fruit is
pure and multi-layered with flavours that seem to go on and on. This wine is all about harmony
and refinement. Drink from 2016.
Le Montrachet Grand Cru £TBC
A captivating wine with layer upon layer of exotic citrus and spicy apple fruit aromas combined
with white truffles and acacia honey notes. There is a real density combined with wonderful
vibrancy on the palate. Complex, subtle fruit characters are followed by a persistent mineral
character which runs through to the end. This is an almost overwhelming complex and elegant
wine but it will need a few more years before it reveals its full expression. Drink 2017.
