The association between infection and SAM has been largely documented.To lower deaths associated with infection, systematic broad-spectrum antibiotichas been recommended for the management of SAM However the appropriate antibioticregimen which is effective, of low cost and «easy-to-use» especially under fieldconditions has not been determined.The objective of this open randomized controlled clinical trial was to compare the ef-~ctiveness of a 2-day intramuscular ceftriaxone regimen (75 mg/kg/day), with a 5-dayoral amoxicillin regimen (80 mg/kg/day).Children aged 6 to 59 months admitted with SAM to the treatment and feeding centreet Mayo clinic (MAYO - TFC) were randomized into ceftriaxone group and amox i-cillin group.
