We’re more than intrigued by it; thestory of its origins gives us strength and a type of chart aswe sail the seas of today’s renaissance of Chinese culture, ofwhich Shen Yun Performing Arts’ dancer Lin Xu, our coverstory, is a leader.In 14th century Italy, artists and scholars suddenly felt compelledto scour Europe’s libraries looking for ancient Greekmanuscripts: those of Cicero, Livy, Seneca and others. Theydiscovered in Cicero a one-man force of nature whose easilyapproachable writings on virtue, character, reasoning, andjustice fueled nations of designers, artists, builders, and scientists.One of Shakespeare’s contemporaries wrote that threebooks were used during this time as the primary guides whentransforming boys into men: Plato’s works, Aristotle’s Ethics,and Cicero’s De Officiis. In De Officiis, Cicero discusses what is“honorable,” what is “expedient,” or to one’s advantage, andwhat to do when the honorable and expedient conflict. Hereasons they are the same, actually, that they only appear tobe in conflict. He also spoke of a natural law that is said togovern both humans and gods alike.Europe found a wellspring of inspiration in these thinkers.Their texts weren’t just the literature of the day, their contentsformed the very essence of what allowed Da Vinci and Michelangeloto create the masterpieces they did. So we could thinkof the Renaissance not as a time or place, but as a way of thinking,a lifestyle that emphasized learning and self-betterment.In ancient China, too, they knew that their greatest doctors,artists and inventors had become great by following paths ofcharacter cultivation and self-improvement. Their entire civilizationdeveloped that way. It doesn’tsay who the ‘one’ being searched for is — there’s adreamy beauty to it all.”Lian Xu is now with Shen Yun Performing Arts, theworld’s most renowned and respected classical Chinesedance company. When she is not training andpracticing, she travels with dozens of peers, performingto sold-out audiences at the most prestigious theatresin the world. The lessons that she gained in heraward-winning performance are what has allowed herto excel in an environment where excellence is the rule.One of these lessons is “practice intensively.” Another,is “assimilate feedback.” While choreographing herdance about the poem, she was told that her movement— sweeping her fan across the water, looking for ‘theone’ — was too superficial.22

When I imagined it,my movement immediately changed,” Lian said. “Thebeauty rose from the bottom of my heart, flowing toevery part of my body.”Lian Xu entered Fei Tian Academy of the Arts,the incubator for Shen Yun dancers, after her familymoved from Taiwan to the United States when her fatherchanged jobs. Studying at Fei Tian was a dreamshe had cherished since she was 7 years old, when shefirst saw Shen Yun on stage in Taipei. After that performance,her parents sent her to local classical Chinesedance classes. She first applied to join Fei Tianwhen just 11 years old but wasn’t tall enough to meetthe requirement.Time passed, and she grew, later applying again. Aftershe was admitted, the real work began.“When I began to learn dance here, a senior studenttold me that I should learn to be strong,” Lian said.“But I didn’t understand what she meant.”Lian was already strong, physically: extremely flexible,very nimble, she jumps high, and has more thanenough stamina. She picked up dancing like it wassecond nature.But physicality is not all that matters when it comesto the complex art of China’s classical dance. Mentaland spiritual strength and endurance are also necessary.Feedback, for instance, hasn’t always been easy forLian to accept. Growing up in Taiwan with loving parentsand great talent at whatever she did, she rarely hadcause to be corrected.“I had done almost everything well since I was little,”Lian said. “I was rarely criticized. Therefore, it’sespecially hard for me to accept teachers’ or classmates’comments on my flaws or problems.”Lian’s standards for herself have always been high,so when she failed to learn a movement after repeatedpractice, she would find it almost unbearable.“One night, when I was practicing after dance class, asenior student tried to help me. Although she was verygentle, I couldn’t bear it. I felt like the sky was collapsing,”Lian recalled.Her friend didn’t react, though, instead continuingto patiently teach, until they practiced together for anothertwo hours. It was late, but “I finally learned thatmovement!” she says.Lian was deeply touched by the selflessness of theother student, who displayed the generosity of spiritthat is a core part of Shen Yun’s mission, and China’straditional culture.“If there was no one to point out my problems, howcould I improve?” Lian reflected. She now relishessuch opportunities.China’s classical dance has a history of thousands ofyears, and is an important component of the country’sculture, featured in court dances before the emperor, orduring the celebration of auspicious occasions. Withits intricate and delicate forms, postures, and bearing,Chinese classical dancers have an endlessly expressivepalette with which to tell stories and impart their characters’feelings to the audience.Actors can rely on facial expressions to communicatetheir meaning, Lian pointed out. But dance is an artof the entire body. “Your whole body must be drivenby a full and abundant feeling, which you then bringout and give full expression to in your movements andexpressions. Everyone in the audience can then feelit,” Lian said.24

And every year,it’s a new challenge how we can do that with newtechnology and materials.”It was 155 years ago when Roset’s great-great grandfather,Antoine Roset senior, opened his wood-turningfactory powered by a water-wheel. Inspiration had struck Ducaroy that morningin the form of a tube of toothpaste. In its shape, hesaw a pillow-like, exceedingly comfortable, all-foam sofaunlike anything the world had seen. For the previous 20years, France had been focused on rebuilding after twoworld wars, and the Rosets mainly made simple tablesand chairs for hospitals and universities. But a new erawas dawning in the interior design world.Jean Roset had faith in Ducaroy’s vision. Dodgingdoubts of “Don’t do it,” and “You’re crazy,” from alldirections, the Roset family pushed their foam manufacturerto create the material they would need. Ittook two years of being on the market to sell the first“Togo” sofa. After that, sales slowly climbed untilthe squeeze-tube-inspired seat became an icon. Today,it’s Ligne Roset’s best-seller in their 700 retaillocations worldwide.Ligne Roset still works with the best foam manufacturersthroughout Europe to drive the artform forward.“We have suppliers that like a challenge, like us. Andthat’s why we’re able to push always new products, newshapes, adding new complexity. We use the technologyof the foam and we are very well known for it.”Design, Roset says, is “creating or recreating a productthat you use every day and making it better, nicer, andmore affordable.”“You have your apartment, you have your idea, ‘Oh Ilike my sofa like this.’ When you come into a Ligne Rosetshop-in-shop like in Livingspace, you change your mind.You say, ‘Okay, you know, I was wrong. I didn’t know, Ididn’t know.’ We bring something else. That’s our job.”When Ducaroy retired in 1980, Ligne Roset shifted toan all-freelance cast of designers for its new collections.“When you have an in-house designer, you have atendency to always reproduce the same things. You’reworking in a closed cycle, and you have this problem ofnot being challenged enough. Working with a freelancedesigner brings you the possibility to work with veryyoung, or very famous designers, and have a balancefrom all around the world.”Roset and his cousin, Ligne Roset’s current head ofdesign, didn’t attend design school, but that doesn’tmatter, according to Roset.“The school teaches you how to draw, teaches youcertain things. Us, we are a manufacturer, we are inindustry, so we know how to do things. We have thetools, we know the tools by heart, and we are telling youwhat we can do and how we can do it.”A design sense can be developed in time, says Rosetas he shares the wisdom he’s gleaned from his ancestors.“One thing they told me when I started is that the30

Every day whenyou wake up, when you walk, or wherever you go, havean interest for things; make sure that you have an interest.If you go to a restaurant, look at things, how theyare finished. I try to be as open-minded as possible,and to focus on the details, the material aspects andelements of design, every day.”So what type of aesthete has Roset become?“I like things quite modern, but I also like to get somewarmth by adding aspects of the past,” he says. For instance,he tells me his white-walled, 14-foot-high loftin New York is furnished with a rug from an Italianbrand that is a patchwork of old rugs stitched together,but his lighting collection is like a retrospective onmodern 20th-century design.“I love lighting,” he says. His collection includes classicsfrom legends like Ingo Maurer: his pendant lights madeof red bottles, a lamp from the winged bulb series, and athird made of paper-thin sheets of gold whose light raysglow blue after passing through the precious metal.Roset has the “Ploum” sofa, the same one we’re sittingon for the interview, designed for Ligne Rosetby French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.“They’re probably the hottest designers in the worldright now,” says Roset.Evocative of a quilted nest, the curvaceous foam cradlesthe body perfectly, is versatile and relaxing, yet aestheticallyunconventional — low to the ground withhairpin legs, and is as shapely as ripe fruit.Brought to market in 2009, he says his company hadto really push the limit of their suppliers to get this newtechnology of hyper-memory foam, and find just theright fabric which would stretch just enough, but nottoo much, to create a taut and tailored aesthetic.“It was very challenging.”It’s all about having the best designers, he says.“People who are, totally... not crazy, but who have avision of the interiors, and can bring it to life and shareit with everyone.”32

In the garden, a 200-yearoldChinese temple, richly ornamented with ChingDynasty and Hindu carvings, is used for weddings.The temple was saved during the Dutch attack onLombok in 1894. Over the years, he amassed a museum-worthycollection. To showcase his treasures, he built TuguMalang, his first boutique museum hotel, on Java in1989. Three other Tugu hotels, on east Java, Bali, andthen Lombok followed.Take the time to view these treasures as they whispertales of Balinese royalty, ancient kingdoms, eternallove, and Indonesian legends. Indeed, at Tugu Bali, wefelt like we had walked into a living history book on Indonesianart and culture. Ask for a tour — Lucienne, thefounder’s daughter, charmed us with her recollections oflovingly exploring antique shops with her dad while herteenage friends spent their time on less soulful pursuits.One crimson-themed villa, which you can visitwhen it’s not occupied, is dedicated to the passionatelove story between Belgian painter Le Mayeur (whocame to Bali in 1932) and the model of his paintings,Balinese dancer Ni Pollok; it showcases the artist’soriginal carved furniture.The piece that started Setjadibrata on his life-long missionof cultural preservation is displayed in Tugu Bali’shotel lobby — a 16th-century stone bowl from which ancientpriests sprinkled holy water on sick villagers.And one object that really caught our eyes was a dramatic,five-metre-high Garuda (sun bird king), carvedfrom a 120-year-old tree, towering above a dance stagein the lobby. Lucienne told us she literally stumbledover the statue at a village. Carved by an Indonesianmaster carver, it had been left outside as too massivefor any home, and had sunk and almost disappearedinto the ground. The velvety lawns of Fox Den Farms, just northof Toronto, provided the ideal backdrop for the charityevent that ran from June 18-21, 2015.Polo For Heart is Canada’s biggest charity poloevent, and has raised over $5 million to date. Thisyear’s proceeds were donated to the Heart & StrokeFoundation and to the Southlake Regional HealthCentre Foundation.While relaxing under the Ritz Carlton sponsors’tent, Michael Sifton, whose father, Col. Sifton, startedthe event, explained: “I grew up on a horse, andpolo is a great game that combines teamwork withthe added challenge of being on horseback. Very fewsports aren’t played on your feet, and unless you haveteamwork, you’re not going to win.”The large white Ritz Carlton Polo Pavilion overlookedthe manicured polo field, providing a sophisticatedoasis to dine, and dance to the live band. For theevening gala event, Polo Under The Stars, tiki torchesand dramatic chandeliers added a warm glow tothe festivities. Despite a call for torrential rains, over700 guests comfortably mingled while watching thenighttime game, dining on lobster tacos as competitorsvied for crystal trophies.On June 19th, Miss World Canada Anastasia Linperched on the back of a convertible as part of thehalf-time parade. She and Mr. World Canada (whois also an Amazing Race Canada contestant), JinderAtwal, judged the fancy hat contest.The CEO of Heart & Stroke Foundation, TomMcAllister, praised Polo For Heart as a communityevent with real staying power. “It’s in its 36th year, andmany things don’t last nearly as long. It has a wonderfultradition of bringing people together to celebratean exciting sport, support a cause that was very closeto the heart of Col. Sifton, and help create survivors.”86
