AlexandraNowakowskiRisingSopranoStarIt’s not everyday that you come across incredibly talented andhumble opera singers. While interviewing Alexandra Nowakowski,a rising soprano star, it was refreshing to hear her story ofpursuing excellence in singing. At only 22 years old, Alexandra isbuilding the balance and experience to succeed in her passion.By: Ania Jablonowski20 revia reviamagazine.com #5, 2014What was it like growing up Polish-American?My parents came to the US from Poland; my father is from Warszawa andmy mother is from Tarnów. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri along withmy brother who is two years younger than me. We moved to Chicago whenI was in second grade.I grew up thinking that I was Polish, rather than American. Our familywould travel to Poland every summer, leaving in May and coming backhome in August before school started. We would spend time between mymom and dad’s hometowns with our grandparents. One of my favoriteplaces was Rabka, such a magical place. There were rolling hills and it feltlike a mini Six Flags theme park. It was a children’s heaven. When I was alittle older, we spent more time in Zakopane, and I fell in love with thosemountains. There was so much to see and do.Our parents were adamant about my brother and I learning the Polishlanguage. I can’t even remember learning English; I feel like I grew uphalf in Poland, half in America. Poland was a second home to us. Somekids made fun of me in second grade for having an accent, and a few ofmy friends still remember that I had one. It’s so interesting, because in Poland I was seen as American, and in America Ialways felt Polish. We started Polish school when I was in third grade. My dad was a big influence on us, he would always speak Polish tous. Everyone referred to me by my Polish nickname “Ola” until I was about 8 years old. It’s funny how at a younger ageyou start to reject some elements of being Polish, and then later in life, you think “this is awesome!” and use it to youradvantage. We go through this identity crisis, and then we accept the fact that we are both Polish and American. How did you decide to pursue singing as a career?I would sing Little Mermaid over and over as a kid. It was unstoppable, I was on replay. I sang some solos in our churchwhen we lived in Missouri, and started doing musical theater shows in sixth grade. In high school, I was very lucky to haveteachers that fostered my passion in singing and music. My mother was also very supportive and really believed that I hadtalent.

I feel like there wasa divine interventionin my ultimatedecision to pursuemusic as a careerIn a way, I feel like there was a divine intervention in my ultimatedecision to pursue music as a career. It was the day before my highschool published a list of where each student was going to studyafter graduation. We were at the National Honorws Society awardsceremony, and a teacher stood up to make an announcement that thiswas last call to submit and finalize your college information. I was asenior at the time, and I was committed to Augustana College to majorin Speech Pathology. All of a sudden, I fell into what I should be doingin life. I made a last minute change to my school and major, choosinginstead to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignto pursue singing. During my freshman year of college, I won theThomas J Smith full-tuition scholarship, which was a great honor. Were there any mentors that helped you along theway?I owe a lot of my growth and musical development to my collegeprofessor, Cynthia Haymon. She created a desire in me to pursueexcellence in singing. With Cynthia, I was able to build up themuscles that I needed to sing what I was singing. The first summerI started with her, we would work every day to help me understandhow the sounds I was making lined up with my brain and body. Istayed with her until I finished my undergrad degree. She taught methat I needed endurance and stamina to sing as a Soprano. Cynthiais very instinctual at figuring out what a singer needs at their stage ofdevelopment.#5, 2014 reviamagazine.com revia 21

Maybe it’s because I grew up as a first generation American andwas shy about standing out. I wanted to blend in with my Americanfriends as a kid and was pretty reserved. “You have a beautiful voice, don’t be afraid to use it. You must always serve the music,” Cynthiawould say. Working with her, I found purpose in music and adirection in life. She taught me that I must be connected to my workfrom my soul. She always encouraged me to grow and move forward. What’s the next step in building your singing career? What’s unique about my career choice is that there is no cookiecutterpath or progression. Being a young opera singer, it’s all aboutfreelancing and gathering income from individual jobs. The tractiondoesn’t build until you get a little older. So you either keep goingto grad school or a doctorate program – or you can work minimumwage jobs and go through the audition circuit. The goal is to beemployed by an opera company. They seek a handful of youngartists, and the majority are experienced opera singers. Since youcan’t sing every role at the age of 20, you have to pace yourself.Right now, I am enrolled in the Academy of Vocal Arts inPhiladelphia. It’s a 4-year program, designed for opera. Thisis utterly ideal for post-grad. Here I have the whole institutionsupporting me, the faculty is well rounded and I get to work withcoaches and teachers that have been in the business for decades.I am very focused on singing, and this is exactly what I need atthis point of my life. We only have 30 students here, and it’s avery international group. There are singers from Serbia, China,Mexico, Armenia, everywhere. I am the only Polish-American in theprogram. We are living the dream, and embracing every moment. This program is preparing me for what my career can bring. It canbe easy for someone to get discouraged, but it’s all about findingmotivation from your inner core being. Every day is a surprise, wedon’t get our schedules until 6pm the evening before. This allows meto be prepared for anything, and living on my toes works well withmy personality. I can’t be shy with music; I accept everything as itis. I get on stage and have to be vulnerable enough to put it all outthere. In opera, you are your own product and you really have to knowwho you are. You have to watch out for yourself, and be grounded.Sometimes you’ll get intimidated, but when you do – keep calm,It would be a dreamto sing somewherelike the WarsawOpera House becauseof my connectionto that cityfocus on your music, and move forward. You also have to rememberit’s not only about you. There’s always collaboration in singing. There is a composer who wrote the music, and you think about why, when, and how. The musicians bring it to life, in collaboration withthe singers and the conductor. There is a balance. It’s amazing towork with people in such an artistic way.One day, I would love to sing in Europe. It would be a dreamto sing somewhere like the Warsaw Opera House because of myconnection to that city. I can see myself constantly changing operahouses, and I am not afraid of traveling. It’s great to know multiplelanguages, and learning Polish as my first language aided me insinging. I also studied Italian in high school, then French andGerman in college. For opera, you need to sing in many languages. You recently won theMarcella KochańskaSembrich VocalCompetition throughthe American Council forPolish Culture. Tell usabout that. This is a national competitionrun by the American Councilfor Polish Culture, strictly forsingers from a Polish heritage.I was the youngest applicantand had the great honor ofbeing chosen as the winner. Iperformed a recital in Buffalo,NY for their convention andsang works by Chopin, Poulenc,Bellini, and Peterburski. It wassuch an amazing experience towork on this repertoire becauseI specifically chose pieces thatconnected back to Polish musicalculture. The most interestingdiscovery was the Polish TangoI sang by Peterburski – I had noclue such a thing existed! So Iended the program with it, it’s afun cabaret piece.22revia reviamagazine.com #5, 2014

drinks & dialoguewith Gino BartucciBy Ania JablonowskiWhen it comes to food andentertainment, MarcAntonioGino Bartucci is one of Chicago’stop experts. As a recipient of the DavidAward for excellence in business salesand promotions by the Italian NationalUnion Foundation, Gino has built a solidreputation in the food and beverageindustry. It’s not a surprise that his successhas flourished from a lifetime career thatwas inspired by his family.Gino Bartucci, a FGA, is the GeneralManager of Vertigo Sky Lounge. Locatedat the Dana Hotel in downtown Chicago,Vertigo was named one of the “Top 3 HotelBars in America” and “#1 Event of the Year”for their “Zombie Apocalypse” party byNightclub & Bar Awards; it is also named“Top 12 Bars in the Nation for After WorkDrinks” by the Huffington Post. Throughouthis career, Gino has owned, operated, andconsulted for over 20 reputable venues inChicago. He has accommodated all typesof celebrities like Jeremy Piven, StevenSpielberg, the Kardashian’s, Kanye West, and athletes from the Chicago Bulls,Blackhawks, Bears, and many others.Gino’s roots in the industry stem from hisparents’ experiences. His mother and fathermoved to Chicago from Italy in pursuitof work and a better life. “Italy is shapedlike a boot, so my parents are from the toeand the heel of the boot. One was a fishingvillage and the other was a farming villagein the mountains. It’s beautiful there.”Coming from a country where food was thepride of the culture, his father immediatelyimmersed himself in what he knew best.“Naturally the food business was one of thefirst jobs my dad was able to get in America.Italians have a passion for food, so it justfit. Food was not only something to sustainand eat, but it was a focus ofconversation, something todo on a Friday or Saturdaynight.”Mr. Bartucci’s firstbusiness, Gino’s ItalianImports, was located onthe north side of Chicago. The deli sold homemadesausages, cheeses, and traditional Italianingredients. The family alsoopened up Pasta Fresh, apasta factory that has been inbusiness for about 30 years, providing fresh homemadepastas and sauces on a daily basis toresidents and restaurants throughoutChicago. Gino notes, “Our quality productsare not only as traditional as it comes, butwhen people come from Italy they reallyconnect with it, it’s beautiful to see. It’s morethan food.”When asked about his first job, Ginolaughs, “To say you have a first job, you’dhave to say you actually got paid!” Hewas about seven years old when he beganrunning around his father’s restaurant asa “curly haired kid in a suit,” smiling ateveryone and thanking for them for comingin. The restaurant staff especially lovedthis, since customers would tip a little moregenerously.Another restaurant opened up by theBartucci family is Nonna Carmela, namedafter Gino’s late grandmother from hisfather’s side. There, Gino began bussingtables, assisting guests, and helping withall of the general responsibilities. He says,“It all comes down to service. We treat ourbusiness like we treat our homes. Anyonecoming in is welcomed with arms wide open, and it’s very warm. Guests feel that theywant to come back.” This is a motto that hascarried on and is pressed upon his currentstaff at Vertigo. He reflects upon how the family’s deliand restaurants impacted his childhoodexperience of bringing a lunch to school. “Ihad roasted chestnuts, weird stinky cheeseswrapped in foil, random fruits, giant Italiansubs that weren’t very popular yet – it wasthe days before Jarred made Subway cool.None of the kids wanted to trade with me, Iwasn’t getting the chocolate pudding. I hada can of sardines. Who wants to trade withthat?” He appreciates being able to lookback and joke about the memory now.Gino’s first language was English, as hismother wanted her kids to become “strongFIRST GENERATION AMERICANYou know whatit’s like to growup with multiplelanguagesin the house, eat differentfood than yourAmerican friends, celebrate certain traditions that areliterally foreign to your peers, and have tobreak down your name syllable by syllable. For first generation Americans, the art ofbalancing two cultures is a unique, yetfundamentally similar experience, and itshapes us in a very significant way.We are on a mission to document thesestories.Americans.” However, preserving the Italianculture was still very important to bothof his parents, so he spent the majority ofhis early childhood surrounded by familyand friends who spoke Italian and kept thetraditions alive. “There was a little bit of anItalian school, but there wasn’t an actualschool structure. It was set up throughfriends of the family at the cultural center. The kids attended to be with other kids theirage, in a cultural setting.” He attended theschool on weekends until eighth grade.Naturally, I asked Gino to teach mesome Italian 101. He starts off with, “It’sall in hand motions, and you have to speakpassionately.” As I motion my hands aroundlike an orchestra pit conductor, I request forhim to share three words or phrases. “Carne.Formaggio. Pasta. …Meat, cheese, andpasta – the three staples of what we revolvearound, the staples of life.”Gino also makes a point to mentionthat he is a diehard soccer fan, or perhaps– Fútbol. He grew up watching the sportwith a love for Gli Azzurri, the nationalItalian team, which he refers to as “the prideof the country.” He notes that it helpedhim identify with his roots as an Italian-American, and he has played the sport sinceearly childhood. He chants, “Forza Azzurri!”He then shares a fascinating experiencethat happened during high school. “A couplemonths after everything was still in anuproar after September 11th, I received aletter from the Italian government – just twodays after I turned 18 – that I need to reportto Torino for duty and serve in the Italianarmy.” His family had to prove that he wasa fulltime American student to absolvehim from duty. “It was scary. Here you arein America, worried about getting draftedfor the US army, and then you get a letterfrom Italy.” This happened due to his dualcitizenship, which his parents filed for in hisearly years. He states that it is a privilege tohave citizenship in both countries.26 revia reviamagazine.com #5, 2014

a s k a n i t atwo of my passions in life are helpingpeople with their love life and writing. With my advice column, “ask anita, ”iget to combine the two! as a dating &relationship expert, i’m on a missionto prove that happy and satisfyingrelationships are possible. i’m alicensed Marriage & Family therapistand hold a Master’s in Marital & Familytherapy from the University of sandiego. i founded relationship reality312, inc., and i work with clients bothinternationally and in my chicagodowntown office. any questions youhave about dating, relationships andmarriage, please email me directly atanita@relationshipreality312.com.i look forward to hearing from you!Dear Anita,I’ve been dating a guy for almost 4months. I feel like I’ve been the onepursuing him and he is very lastminute with plans. He texts me a lotlate at night and we’ll hang out, butsometimes days go by that I don’t hearfrom him. I just don’t understand. Itwould be nice to have a little bit morecommunication but I don’t want tosound like a crazy/needy girl. Should Ikeep seeing him? Is this salvageable?at this point, what is it that you aretrying to salvage? You’re pursuing aguy who isn’t giving you what you need. You’re not crazy or needy for speaking upfor something that’s important to you ina relationship – it makes you an awareand emotionally mature individual whois ready for a relationship. If a guy evercalls you crazy or needy for telling himwhat you want, then you should move onimmediately. You have to determine how importantconsistent communication is to you. Itsounds like going days without hearingfrom him is not acceptable to you. So thefirst step is speaking up and telling himwhat your expectations are regardinghis contact with you. What exactly is a“little bit more communication”? It’s stillearly in your dating so he may have adifferent perspective about your level ofcommitment to each other, and thereforehis amount of contact with you. Or hemay just be clueless about what you want. It’s better to clarify rather than to be leftguessing and analyzing his every moveand what it potentially means. He may tellyou that he doesn’t like daily contact at allor because he’s just not ready for that yet.Whatever the reason, at least you’ll knowand can decide if this is acceptable to youor not at almost 4 months. You next have to determine howimportant it is that he plans dates inadvance. Texting you last minute andhanging out is not dating. You haveto show this guy how you want to betreated. If it’s important that he sets adate, then stop seeing him last minute! As I previously mentioned, you need tospeak up for what your expectations arewith actual dates. Some people consider“hanging out” dating, while others do not.Talk to him about your concerns and whatyou’re looking for at this stage.Dating is meant to filter the right peoplein and the wrong people out. If you’reunhappy this early in dating him, he maynot be the right guy for you. But at leastgive him the chance to step up or bow out.Dear Anita,I’m 33 and have been datinga guy for two months. We metonline. We haven’t had the talkabout being exclusive but heimplied he’s not dating otherwomen. He also has been workinga lot recently and he’s frequentlytired, so I don’t think he’deven have time to date others!Should I bring up “the talk”? Isit necessary? I’m dating to finda long-term partner and I don’twant to date anyone but him.yes! You don’t want to assumeexclusivity. Implying he’s notdating other women now doesn’tmean that he’s not in contact withthem. After all, you two met online.Sure, he may work a lot and betoo tired to date, but he could bebrowsing other profiles or textingother women. A new woman is amere click away and you don’t wantto assume that he’s not setting thestage for future dates when his workschedule lightens up.Also, people have different timelines. You may be ready to only date him,and he may need more time beforehe’s comfortable with that. If heneeds more time, can you respectthat? Is there any information orassurance that you would still needfrom him? For example, such as eventhough you’re not exclusive, he likesyou and wants to keep dating you. Ifyou’re dating for a long-term partner, you don’t want to waste your time, but he may not be as confident aboutyou as you are with him. It’s not abad thing – people have a differentpace for the dating stage. He mayneed more time to want exclusivity, but then you can decide if you wantto date other people as well.A final thing to consider is that youdon’t want him to slide into thedecision to be exclusive with you:“We’ve been dating for awhile, Iguess it’s the next step. Sure, you canbe my girlfriend!” You want him tochoose you and make the consciousdecision, even if it takes longer thanyou’d like. Bring up the talk and ifhe needs more time, give it to him.Continue to have fun dating him andthen bring this up again at a laterdate.Email your dating and relationshipquestions to Anita atanita@relationshipreality312.com.28 revia reviamagazine.com #5, 2014

Beauty in The Breakdown:Ebola Now Faces a Global ResponseBy Dr. Michael J FelinskiEvents over the last few months have familiarizedthe globe with the death anddevastation yoked within the worstoutbreak of Ebola in human history. Thusfar, the WHO reports 4,500 deaths, makingthis outbreak more devastating than allprevious outbreaks combined. In the courseof a year, the galloping intruder has spreadthrough Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and has recently crossed over to Spainand the USA. The focus is no longer just onWest Africa, as all of mankind is now backagainst the wall, forced to fight the mostintricate, unpredictable, and dangerous ofbattles. The rendition and pattern of this virus isas unprecedented as it is deadly. Researchteams at the Broad Institute and HarvardUniversity have found more than 300 distinctmutations in this specific Ebola (EVD)genome, and never before has an epidemiccentered around urban areas, which makestransmission more probable and trackingmore difficult. Individuals who contract Ebolaoften isolate themselves, choosing to battlethe humiliation and detriment of the diseasealone, as a last resort for protecting theirloved ones. In turn, this leads to a lack ofcontext when quantifying cases and distortedreports of severity, symptoms, and patternsof transmission.West African countries are also facing internaldeterrents of their own. Local povertyand a deficient water supply coexist in a culturewhere washing the deceased significantlypredisposes people to direct contact withthe infected. To make matters worse, someWest African nations have become suspiciousof both the governments and hospitals, resulting in plundering attacks by enragedprotestors. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF),the largest NGO working in the area, describesthe current situation as an “emergencywithin the emergency,” for, as protectiveequipment is becoming scarce, staff moraleis shutting down with the buckling hospitals.Since the first outbreak in 1976, Ebola hasmainly lingered in Africa. Had pharmaceuticalcompanies found a profitable avenuesooner, it is likely that a cure would alreadybe in circulation. “If the ZMapp treatment isa consistent success, that might spur biggercompanies to invest more money in findinga cure,” said Charles Arntzen, the ringleaderbehind the now thrice lifesaving serum. The serum combines the MB-003 andZMAb Ebola treatments, and requires tobaccoplants to be fused with genes of the desiredantibodies, which are released once theplants are infected with the virus. The harvestedantibodies help mount an immediateimmune response against the virus, and havesuccessfully treated two Americans, Dr. KentBrantley and missionary Nancy Writebol, aswell as U.K. nurse Will Pooley, who receivedthe last treatment doses available to date. Bythe end of 2014, treatments for only 80 morepatients can be made with the current methodology.Dr. Brantley made his progressive passionheard all over the world, which resulted in apersonal audience with President Obama inthe White House, a testament in itself to theefficacy of ZMapp and the hope that it hasgenerated. Speaking before Congress, he vividlydepicted the region’s wholly inadequatehealthcare system, focusing on the lack ofmobile laboratories and equipment, as wellas the local desolation and despair.“The response to date, however, has remainedsluggish and unacceptably out of stepwith the scope and size of the problem thatis now before us,” he stated before the panel.“If the outbreak is not stopped now, wecould be looking at hundreds of thousandsof people infected, with political, economic, and security implications for all of us,”Obama warned.According to an August report by Eurosurveillance,in the hypothetical worst-casescenario, if the reproduction ratio of over 1.0continues for the remainder of the year, theexpected number of additional cases by theend of 2014 can reach north of 277,000.Thus far, the global response has beena fiasco as aid efforts and treatment supplyhave been inadequate; but the tides arechanging as mankind is embracing a unifiedfront. The Obama administration has agreedto: build a regional control center, send out400,000 home treatment kits without delay, deploy 3000 troops to build 17 new healthcarefacilities, and train as much as 500 localhealthcare workers per week.Other treatments and vaccines are beingresearched around the world includingTKM-EBOLA, Favipiravir and the U.K. NI-AID/GSK vaccine, which, thanks to a £2.8million grant has had the green light for a10,000 dose manufacturing run. Cuba isdonating 465 doctors, and China likewise issending in aid workers with its own experimentalvaccine. Nurses and doctors are beingrecruited and trained in unprecedentedamounts, while Ebola survivors are doingmass-plasma donations. The world is coming together to battlea common enemy, and through that Ebolahas become the quintessential duplicitousstory of recent times. The malevolence beingforced upon humanity in– turn is forcing itto reconnect with its existing resilience, putdifferences aside, search for innate resolve, and showcase its capacity for unity, whichwill forever echo and shape the way the globeresponds to threats of the future. This pastyear has been an exhibition of hope and necessity, demonstrating that humanity can bejust as capable as we are farsighted.34revia reviamagazine.com #5, 2014

Ask an AttorneyMy name is Lucas Fuksa and I am an attorney engaged primarily in the practice of business law, constructionlaw, real estate transactions, and commercial litigation. I co-founded Fuksa Khorshid, LLC in late 2006,a boutique law firm located in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. I served as president of the Polish AmericanChamber of Commerce for four years. Through the PACC, I have been a part of many initiatives focusedon promoting the interests of the Polish-American business community. In late 2012, I co-founded a politicalaction committee, the Polish American Leadership Political Action Committee (PAL-PAC), whose main focus isto address political issues that are important to the Polish-American community, engage the Polish-Americancommunity in the political process, and elect candidates that will best serve the needs of Polish Americans.Q: I am buying a house and the home inspectionrevealed some defects. Can I askfor those defects to be repaired?A: Generally a buyer can ask for almost anythingto be repaired, but in these situationsyou need to use discretion because you don’twant to upset the seller to the point that theseller wants to cancel the deal. For example, asking for things such as repairing a loosedoor handle is minor and often, the purchasecontract may even prohibit requestsfor such minor items (typically anything thatcosts less than $200 to repair). You shouldalso avoid asking the seller to repaint wallsor replace carpet because those are thingsthat you should have noted when you firstviewed the home and therefore, taken intoconsideration when writing your offer. Myadvice is to request repairs on major defectsthat were only discovered after professionalinspection of the home or on items thatsignificantly threaten your safety.Q: Is there anything I should be concernedabout after leaving my employer to work fora competitor?A: You should check your old employmentcontract, employee handbook or other materialssetting forth information regardingrestrictive covenants. Some employers mayinclude non-competition, non-solicitationor non-disclosure covenants as a conditionof your employment. Non-disclosureagreements prevent you from telling peopleoutside the company about confidentialinformation, which will also be defined inthe agreement but often includes things notgenerally known to the public that generaterevenue for the employer, such as tradesecrets, customer/pricing lists, algorithmsor software codes, and the like. Abide bythis agreement. However, non-solicitationagreements – an agreement to not enticeemployees or clients of the old employer tojoin you and your new company – and particularlynon-competition agreements mustbe reasonable in duration (amount of timeyou are bound), place (the areas of whichyou are bound) and scope (the amount ofactivities from which you are bound) in orderto be valid. Illinois law in 2013 changedsuch that these types of provisions may beinvalidated if you did not work for your oldemployer for at least two years, particularlywhen the employer did not provide you anyextra compensation or benefits as a result ofaccepting the restrictive covenant.Q: One of the unit owners in my condo associationis delinquent. When should westart collection efforts?A: It is best to start collection efforts asquickly as possible. If the delinquent ownerdefaults on his/her mortgage, then the bankcan foreclose on the property. If that happens, the board is likely to omit past dueassessments. The Illinois CondominiumProperty Act allows the board the opportunityto evict a unit owner and rent outthe unit in order to pay for past due assessments. It is in the board’s best interest to dothis as soon as possible. The board must givethe unit owner 30 days to pay, and if the unitowner does not, the Board can file an evictionlawsuit and rent out the unit.LUCAS FUKSA#5, 2014 reviamagazine.com revia 35

l a m o d eBy Leandro MuletWhen the Revia Magazine team approached me with theidea of writing a fashion article, I did not hesitate toaccept the offer. This is an amazing opportunity, not only toreach fashion lovers out there, but also to create a better understandingof what the world of fashion is all about. Underthe dimmed light of a coffee shop, sipping hot chai tea, theteam and I discussed how to appeal to you, the reader. Fashionis a major part of my life and using this bullet undermy belt, I decided to add an additional title to my repertoire;Fashion Journalist. My name is Leandro Mulet, and I am a Cuban fashiondesigner based in Chicago. Each month I will present youwith new and interesting topics about fashion and how theyrelate to everyday life. The question I am sure you are asking yourself is: whyshould you follow my advice? Well, I not only work as a professionalstyle advisor, but I also have my own clothing line. While I love my work as a stylist, designing is really wheremy passion borders on obsession. As a designer I am alwaysfollowing current and future trends as well as drawing inspirationfrom the world around me.My designs blur the lines of avant-garde and femininity. Each one of my pieces evokes the edginess that we allhave inside, but don’t often bring to the surface. I like tofuse historical references with a modern silhouette, givingit a novel twist. My collections are meant to make a uniquestatement.Fashion is not only an art, but also an expression of howwe feel inside. For example: a beautiful blouse or a greatfitted pair of pants can change your day, making you feelbeautiful and confident. Every month I will present youwith "Fashion Secrets" that will help you feel empoweredand beautiful. To introduce my designs, I have selected a few photosfrom my most recent show. In collaboration with Adel’s“Spoiled Me Salon,” my collection "La Dame De Noir"closed the show that opened Chicago Fashion Week. Localcelebrities, Jillian Conley and Jeff Conway, hosted the eventwith Jillian wearing a beautiful printed silk skirt and a blackvelvet top that I designed specifically for the occasion. Thenight was attended by local businesses and fashion worldprofessionals, easily making it the hotspot for networkingwith some of Chicago’s most talented emerging artists.Revia Magazine has provided me with a chance to connectwith readers who share my passion for the fashionworld. With this wonderful opportunity, I can finally addressthe issues that many people encounter everyday whendesigning their own wardrobe:• What to wear to the first date?• What is the new style and where to get it?• How to express one’s individual fashion while still maintaininga professional look.I will also discuss the staple pieces that everyone shouldhave in their closet and how every individual can use themto fit their unique style purposes. My journey as a fashion designer has been incredible. Findingmyself surrounded by wonderful people who encourageme and share my passion has urged me to share myknowledge and experiences. I hope you are up for the rideas I guide you into the wonderful, exciting, and beautifulworld of fashion.38 revia reviamagazine.com #5, 2014PHotoGraPHy: JereMy cHedsHare PHotoGraPHy,MattHeW sPerzel
