Let me first start off this issueby inviting everyone out toour official Magazine LaunchParty on October 15th at VertigoSky Lounge. We have teamed up with Ania Jablonowski from FirstGeneration American (and you may also know her from the MANYarticles within REVIA itself) to officially launch REVIA into monthlycirculation. We have chosen First Generation American as themain beneficiary of the event because we felt it was a natural fit andlove what Ania does to help “FGA’s” get the proper attention theydeserve. If you’re reading this article, chances are you are a firstgenerationAmerican or have somewhere along the line immigratedto this country yourself. All proceeds from the event will go to theFirst Generation American organization. So, even if you can’t attendand would like to help First Generation American, you can donatevia our page at www.ReviaMagazine.com.Shortly after the release of the third issue of REVIA, I started toget an influx of emails in response to the editor’s note I wrote. Incase you didn’t get a chance to read it, it was a call to the readers toshare their experiences with being a Polish immigrant (or child ofan immigrant). I was pleasantly surprised with the sheer amountof these emails. Clearly it’s a topic that struck a chord with thereaders and rightfully so. It’s also amazing to see the consistencyin the kinds of responses. I immediately noticed that many of youhave had similar experiences to my own. Whether it is dealing withthe ridicule as younger kids, or trying to fit in throughout the teenyears and college, I realized I am not alone in my past and howit shaped my future. This also inspired me to do a quick searchonline on what is out there for my generation in terms of an onlinecommunity. I scratched my head and wondered about why I wasn’tseeing much out there. Based on all the emails I mentioned above, why wasn’t I seeing a ton of links to sites and blogs for people likeme, looking to relate to stories and experiences? One thing rang trueat that moment for me: If it weren’t for REVIA and First GenerationAmerican as well as this group of people dedicated to sharing andgetting the word out on not only what we’re all about but also whatwe’re doing to make a difference, I think we’d be worse off. So thankyou to all of you contributors, all of you readers, and all of youspreading the word. Let’s keep it going and celebrate how far we’vecome on October 15th! First Generation American:Drinks & Dialoguewith Lucas Fuksaby Ania JablonowskiWere you born in the US or Poland?I was born in Sanok, Poland and came tothe US when I was four and a half years old.My father is originally from Kraków. Firstwe moved to Austria as refugees for over ayear, I was three years old when we left Poland.Living in Austria includes some of myearliest memories. I can picture the hotelthat we stayed at near a farm. I rememberhow much it snowed, and playing in thesnow with my older brother. We celebratedChristmas there, which was actually prettyterrifying for me and my brother. We havea photo with a scary looking Santa, he hada tall hat with a cross, and was followed bythese little men dressed up as furry animalswith large teeth and horns on their heads. They each carried a large stick. I’m surethere is a fable that goes with it, but we weretoo young to understand. We didn’t haveany family in Austria, it was a temporarystop to get you over to America. How and why did your family cometo the US?My father despised living in Communism.Living through it shaped his political viewstoday. He cherishes freedom, capitalism, and democracy. This greatly influenced metoo. We came back to visit Poland for thefirst time in 1989. I can still recall it. Thestores had empty shelves, my Babcia wouldstand in line for bread at 4am and therewere only small rations. It was a completelydifferent world from what we had inAmerica. We never saw any brand namesor choices of items. There was no capitalism,no competition. As a child, I distinctlyremembered that nothing had colored packaging;it was a government grocery store. When we moved to the US, my dad’sdistant cousin Henry lived in Park Ridge, ILand we moved into his basement. He wasour only contact in Chicago. Henry’s familydidn’t even speak Polish, so our familystarted to learn English right away. After afew months, we moved to an apartment thatHenry owned by Central and Foster Avenuein Chicago. How would you compare yourchildhood to your peers’experiences growing up?My American friends had a different attitudeabout certain things. They didn’tunderstand what it meant to be wasteful. After seeing what was happening in Polandin 1989, I was very aware of differences inAmerica. I had a hard time stepping awayfrom my dinner plate unless I ate all myfood, I hated being wasteful. Even with mylunch – I remember when my mom packedme sardines for lunch and some Americanfriends were grossed out and dared me toeat them. Someone said they would giveme $5 if I ate the whole can, and I said“of course I am going to eat it – that’s mylunch!” Needless to say, that was the easiest$5 I ever made.I never really had an accent growing up.It feels like I started speaking English withina few days of moving to the US. But I didfeel a bit embarrassed speaking Polish tomy parents in the grocery store and publicplaces when I was younger. I would alwayskeep my voice down. Looking back, it wassilly. My parents would hassle me and say Ishould be proud that I could speak Polish.Of course now I appreciate it.My brother and I entertained ourselvesLucas Fuksa, co-founder ofFuksa Khorshid, LLC., is an attorneyengaged primarily in the practice ofbusiness law, construction law, realestate transactions, and commerciallitigation. He served as presidentof the Polish American Chamberof Commerce for four years andco-founded the Polish AmericanLeadership Political Action Committee(PAL-PAC), where he currently servesas president. Despite not having strongties to the Polish community in hischildhood, Lucas grew to appreciatethe value of connecting with his roots. He shares his experience of how hebecame involved with many Polishorganizations and what it was like togrow up first generation American.by playing outside a lot. Since our parentscouldn’t afford the same toys that ourAmerican friends had, we would ride ourbikes in empty parking lots and make fortsout of cardboard boxes.More so than my experience being differentfrom my American peers, I would saymy father’s experience was very differentfrom my friends’ parents. In Poland, mydad was an educated engineer. After movinghere, he couldn’t find a job as an immigrant,so he sold sandwiches. He woke up at 3am,got to work at 4am, and he would bring hisfood truck to wherever construction workerswere, selling sandwiches and coffee. Duringthis time, he was also constantly applyingfor engineering positions. He was discrimi-14revia reviamagazine.com #4, SEPTEMBER 2014

nated against by being Polish, people wouldcall him names, but he never thought muchof it. He just thought, “that’s life, brush it offand move on.” He ended up landing an engineeringposition in Wisconsin. We stayedout there during kindergarten through thebeginning of third grade. What brought you back to Chicagoafter Wisconsin? My mother wanted to come back. By then, all her friends from Poland started movingto Chicago too, and she missed beingaround them. It was great, because all of asudden we got all these “aunts and uncles,”like all Polish families do. You’re not related, and you don’t realize until you’re older thatthey are actually your mom’s friends – butyou still call them “Ciocia and Wujek” as anadult. For my brother and I, it was coming backtotally fresh. We didn’t know anyone. Theother kids knew we were Polish. They wouldhear me speak Polish to my parents – thatwas strange for them. There wasn’t a singlekid at our school that was Polish, outside ofmy brother and I. We were also seen as evenmore different because we were technicallyfrom Wisconsin. We made friends prettyquickly and didn’t find it difficult to assimilate.I considered myself an American.I didn’t really have a lot of Polish friendsgrowing up, because at that time, therewasn’t a big Polish community where welived.Did you attend Polish school? We didn’t start Polish school until I wasin fifth or sixth grade. My brother actuallyattended with me, in the same class. Mindyou, he is three years older and was injunior high already. Neither of us felt like webelonged; it felt like everyone there alreadyknew each other. A few times, we actuallywaited until our parents left and walkeddown the street to go to Sportsmart. Wegot away with it until one day the teachersaid something to our parents about beingabsent. We really didn’t make any friends inPolish school to the point of hanging outsideof class. Eighth grade was our last year. I regretnot being there longer though. It wouldhave been a good opportunity to better mygrammar and writing. How were you perceived by Poleswhen you would go back to visitPoland? My brother and I stood out as Americanswhen we would travel. We looked Americanwith our Air Jordans, Bulls gears, andskateboards. I don’t even think anyone hada skateboard where we were at, and wewould just ride down the streets with peoplestaring at us.How did you get involved withPolish organizations? It wasn’t until after I graduated law schoolthat I really started becoming involved inPolish organizations. Since my parentsmostly found their community betweenfriends, family, and church, they didn’tparticipate in the Chamber, etc.I started working at a successful law firmin McHenry county. It was a great experience, and I was able to dabble in differentareas of law. We had a few Polish clients, since Algonquin had many Polish residents.Though my “professional Polish” wasn’tperfect, I began communicating on a businessand legal level. That helped a lot. Ibecame involved with the Polish communityin about 2006 when I was 28 years old andmoved back to the city to start my practicewith a partner. As someone new starting alaw firm, I thought it would be great to getsome Polish speaking clients and directedmy efforts to that market. I also wanteda deeper involvement in the communitybeyond the firm. One day, my brother’s wife wanted tointroduce me to Stan Nowak, who was thePresident of a Polish business chamber.Stan’s chamber joined the Polish-AmericanChamber of Commerce, where I met HenryKazmierczak, the President of PACC at thetime. Both Stan and Henry became my mentors. One thing that I feel I had an advantagewith in my career was the opportunityto learn so much from successful people thattook me under their wings. My father didn’thave that when he came here – he just hadto figure it out on his own. When Henry’sterm as President ended, he suggested thatI give it a try. He liked the fact that I was ayoung, Polish attorney with my own business.I was honored to take on the position. As President, I wanted to change thedynamic a bit by integrating more Americanbusinesses into the Chamber. I also focusedon strengthening our relationship withPoland and not just targeting businesses inthe Chicago area. This led to a lot of internationalinitiatives among the PACC andvarious Polish businesses and agencies thataimed at exploiting business opportunitieshere and in Poland.Networking with Poles in the Chicagocommunity led me to meet connect withPoland in a great way. I met with the [former]Minister of Foreign Affairs, RadosławSikorski, Polish delegates, leaders, prominentofficials. It really sparked my interestin politics. There was a lacking politicalrepresentation in the Polish-American community. In 2013, I joined Arie Zweig’s efforts increating an organization for our voices tobe heard. The Polish-American LeadershipPolitical Action Committee (PAL-PAC)was formed for the purpose of addressingsocial, civic, and business interests of thePolish-American community in the UnitedStates. Three general initiatives are utilizedto accomplish this goal: education, issueadvocacy, and representation. Together, weare able to show politicians that Poles have astrong voting block.Do you have any advice for today’syoung Polish-American businessprofessionals?Get involved in the Polish-American communityas much as you can. There are a lot ofgreat Polish organizations here in Chicagothat can help you connect with your Polishroots. If you are looking for a job, lookingfor friends, or wanting to expand yourbusiness, don’t forget that you can find a lotof solutions through the Polish-Americancommunity. As Polish-Americans, we haveto realize that we have a lot of potential as aresult of the strong principles we share, butwe can only succeed and make an impact ifwe support each other and work together.#4, SEPTEMBER 2014 reviamagazine.com revia 15

Tacos & Pierogi:PolExican TalESby Marta PatlanBusy doesn’t begin to describe it.Being a mom is a constant push andpull tug of war with kids, work, andfamily. I’m not unique in this, but to addto it, as a Polish American mom marriedto a Mexican American husband, either bychoice or by chance, I’ve added an extralayer of ‘to-do’ with the constant loomingguilt of incorporating the language andculture of Poland and Mexico into mychildren’s’ lives.I recently met a dear Polish friend ofmine for a playdate with our girls. At aplaycafe in Chicago, we chased after our1 ½ and 3 year old daughters as theyshrieked with excitement amongst kidsof different cultures.[Mama-note: what a treatto be able to take justone kid somewhere whenyou have more. It reallyhelps you appreciate thatlittle person with a bit ofone-on-one time. Do it whenever you can!]Within the couple of hours that we playedthere, I heard at least 4 or 5 differentlanguages being spoken. What stood outto me was that I didn’t hear anyone elsespeaking Polish. If your kids were bornhere, chances are, you speak Polish tothem and they answer you in English. Thisphenomenon of retaining the languagebut not using it is not exclusive to mychildren and it’s taken me years to acceptthis as ‘ok’ and ‘good enough’ for my kids.In other words, I want them to be aroundPolish as much as possible in the hopesthat they retain more and more. To add,the friend I was with, a wonderful stay athome mom, mentioned that even thoughshe’s in the heart of Chicago, she hastrouble finding other Polish moms like usto connect with.I later brought this upto my brother, Karl, saying,“I wish I had an outlet asa young Polish mom…avoice.” Being siblings, we’vehad a similar experiencegrowing up being sort ofstuck in between Polishand American (not nearlyPolish enough, and notquite totally American). Asadults we’ve now embracedbeing Polish American, just the right amount ofeach. He reminded meabout Revia and the opportunity to be apart of a new found culture, somethingthat no doubt makes our rodzice anddziadki proud. Later that day, I grabbeda recent copy that I had lying on mykitchen table. I realized that the goalof the magazine is to give young PolishAmericans a place to come together andleave our mark.Long story short, that’s what broughtme here. In between homework, deadlinesat work, helping Mama and Tato figureout their cell phone plan, or meeting afriend for a martini, I’m excited with theprospect of sharing my stories and lifelessons with the hopes that someone outthere reads my words and sees a bit ofthemselves in my everyday. But first – it’stime for dinner– and you guessed it, tacosand pierogi!16revia reviamagazine.com #4, SEPTEMBER 2014

Dorota Koziolover the years I have been askednumerous times how I became afinancial advisor and honestly I fellinto the field while working in Real Estate.I am certainly glad because it has proven tobe a very rewarding career field. There arelots of contributing factors that led me herewhich are difficult to explain, yet the reasonsI like the job are rather simple.A large portionof my work is tosit down with myclients and talk to them about their financialgoals, which can be really eye openingexperience. In many cases people have goalsand no idea how to achieve them, someare completely unrealistic. Working withthem to get on the right track to meet theirgoals is a very rewarding part of the job andsomething I really enjoy doing.Preparing for your retirement is criticaland most people don'tpay near enoughattention to everythingrequired. It costs alot to retire and willtake a long time tosave the appropriateamount of money. Youneed to make sure tostart saving as earlyas possible to be ableto retire comfortably. The most realistictime to start is in yourthirties. While preparingfor retirement should be a major concernthere are a remarkable number of peoplewho have begun this process at all. Evenworse, many of the people who thinkthey are prepared are realisticly not. Thebiggest issue is most people have grosslyunderestimated how much money they willneed to retire. People are living longer thanever before and that means your retirementperiod will require larger savings thanexpected. Ideally you will want to build upover a million dollars available for yourretirement fund.Preparing for retirement is mainly aboutmaking sure that you save money. This iswhere a lot of people run into trouble. Thereare so many daily expenses that come upand make it difficult to save. The attitude istaken that they can't afford to save moneynow, but in a couple years they will be ableto. This rarely works out; there is no amountof income you can't spend. You have to makea conscious effort to save for retirement andstart as soon as possible. We have all heardabout the advantages that come from savingearly due to compound interest. This reallyis true, so make sure to start as soon aspossible. What I do is I teach people about moneyand how to make it work for you. Myprimary goal is one thing; to help peoplebecome financially independent. Meaning, the interest you're earning on the moneyput away every month in savings replacesyour normal earnings from your business orsalary. At that point, you don't have to workanymore. You may choose to , but it won’tbe necessary. That's financial independenceand I am sure most people would like toachieve it as quickly as possible. If you find this information interestingplease be sure to call me or write an email.I will be more than happy to sit down andhelp prepare a proper retirement plan thatsuites you and your family.doRoTa koziolSafE MonEy financial SoluTionSinfo@dorotakoziol.comoffice 847 725-0510www.SafeMoneyfinancialSolutions.com18revia reviamagazine.com #4, SEPTEMBER 2014

Ask an AttorneyMy name is Lucas Fuksa and I am an attorney engaged primarily in the practice of business law, constructionlaw, real estate transactions, and commercial litigation. I co-founded Fuksa Khorshid, LLC in late 2006,a boutique law firm located in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. I served as president of the Polish AmericanChamber of Commerce for four years. Through the PACC, I have been a part of many initiatives focusedon promoting the interests of the Polish-American business community. In late 2012, I co-founded a politicalaction committee, the Polish American Leadership Political Action Committee (PAL-PAC), whose main focus isto address political issues that are important to the Polish-American community, engage the Polish-Americancommunity in the political process, and elect candidates that will best serve the needs of Polish Americans.Q: If I get fired or quit my job, do I getpaid for my remaining vacation days?A: It depends on how your employer hasstructured its vacation policy. You areentitled to all vacation days that haveaccrued on the date you are fired less thenumber of vacation days you have alreadyused. Some employers allow vacationtime to accrue immediately upon employment.Others require that it accrues aftera certain amount of time or in monthlyallotments (for example, if you have 12vacation days, you earn 1 vacation day permonth). In the above example, if you arefired on March 13th and have used 1 vacationday, you are entitled to two vacationdays.Q: I get paid as an independent contractor(not on payroll), but my boss has mademe spend most of my workweek in the office.Should I be considered an employee?A: You may, in fact, be an employee. Themore your boss controls the details of yourprofessional life, the more likely you are tobe considered an employee. Relevant considerationsinclude whether you determineyour own schedule and workplace, whetheryou provide your own tools or equipment, whether you perform your work dutiesfor multiple businesses, and whether yougenerally exercise your own judgment andexpertise in the performance of your duties. If the answer to all of those is yes, youare likely an independent contractor. If theanswer is no, you are more likely to be anemployee and should be on payroll.Q: I’m a tenant and the condominium I amrenting has just gone into foreclosure, doI have to move out?A: Last year a new law came into effectprotecting Illinois renters in foreclosedproperties. As a result, if the property youare in is foreclosed upon and a new ownertakes over, the new owner (new landlord)has to honor your existing lease or providesufficient notice so you can find new housing. The new landlord may terminate alease established prior to the confirmationof sale only at the end of the term of thelease, upon no less than 90 days' writtennotice or in the case of a lease that is for amonth-to-month or week-to-week term, byno less than 90 days' written notice.Q: If I sign a contract to buy a property, can I ever get out of it?A: Most likely, yes. Typically contractshave several contingencies including anattorney approval contingency, inspectioncontingency, and a mortgage contingency. Before the expiration of those contingencies, you will have an opportunityto terminate the contract. For example, during the attorney approval contingency, your attorney will review the terms of thecontract and suggest modifications if thereis something unfavorable to you. If theseller does not accept those modifications, you can terminate the contract so long asthe contingency period has not expired. p o l i s h c i t i e soŚWiĘciMThe modest provincial town ofOświęcim is better known by itsGerman name, “Auschwitz”, andwas witness to an enormous evilcaused by humankind. Around 1.5 millionpeople perished in the largest Nazi exterminationcamp of the Second World War.A gruesome exposition in the former campmakes the visitors rethink their basic humanvalues, such as humanity and dignity.Oświęcim, is a town of around 45,000inhabitants, is now an important localcenter for trade and industry (mechanicaland chemical). Most people in Polandand around the world generally associateit with its gruesome concentration camp. The local population underline that theylive in Oswiecim, not in Auschwitz, andthe organizations that you can find in thetown prove that apart from being a memorialto the scariest experiment in humanhistory, Oswiecim is a place where life stillgoes on.Oświęcim has a rich history, whichdates back to the early days of Polish statehood. It is one of the oldest castellan gordsin Poland. Like other towns of Lesser Poland,Oświęcim prospered in the periodknown as Polish Golden Age. Howeverthe good times ended in 1655, during thecatastrophic Swedish invasion of Poland. In 1772 it was annexed by the HabsburgEmpire, as part of the province of Galicia, where it remained until late 1918.In the second half of the 19th century,Oświęcim became an important rail junc-tion. In the same period, the town wasdevastated by several fires, such as the fireof August 23rd 1863, where two-thirds ofOświęcim burned. After World War I, thetown became part of the Second PolishRepublic’s Kraków Voivodeship. In October 1939, Nazi Germany annexedthe area to Germany. Nazi Germanyused forced labor to build a new subdivisionto house Auschwitz guards andstaff. Polish residents of several districtswere forced to abandon their houses,as the Germans wanted to keep the areaaround Auschwitz concentration campempty. Altogether, some 17,000 people inOświęcim itself and surrounding villageswere forced to leave their homes, andeight villages were wiped off the map. Asa result, by April 1941, the population ofOświęcim shrank to 7,600.After the territorial redistributionsthat followed World War II, new housingcomplexes in the town were developedwith large buildings of rectangular andconcrete constructions. The chemical industrybecame the main employer of thetown. Tourism to the concentration campsites is an important source of revenuefor the town's businesses. In the mid-1990s following Communism's end, employmentat the chemical works reducedfrom 10,000 in the Communist era to only1,500 people.PICtUres By KAsIA AUGUstyn By @AUGUstFotKI(teXt KW soUrCe WIKI)24revia reviamagazine.com #4, SEPTEMBER 2014

BRUCE RAUNERFor too long, the politicians in charge of state government have governed thinking only aboutthe short term. Pat Quinn and Mike Madigan go from crisis to crisis, papering over our structuralproblems and refusing to fundamentally reform state government. Our focus has to be on transforming the way government operates. It’s not just about this year’s budget, or next year’s budget; bringingback Illinois is about fundamentally shaking up Springfield, endingthe corruption and the self-dealing, growing our economy so we havestronger revenue streams, and fixing our schools. It’s not just about this year’s budget, or next year’s budget; bringingback Illinois is about fundamentally shaking up Springfield, endingthe corruption and the self-dealing, growing our economy so we havestronger revenue streams, and fixing our schools.Today, I announced ten key steps needed to reform state governmentand eliminate wasteful spending as part of a series of policy initiativeswe will continue to unveil in the coming weeks. These reforms are acritical step in the right direction and more is to come.We need to understand just how broken our state government is. Thereforms I outlined today and will continue to roll out over the next fewweeks aren’t about just shifting money from here to there to sell aphony budget like the one we just saw come out of Springfield. Thatsort of Quinn-Madigan thinking is how we got into this mess. We can’tjust rearrange the furniture on the Titanic and claim we’re changingcourse. We need fundamental change – that’s what this is about.Today, I laid our more than $1 billion in structural reforms, and we’ve onlyhad a chance to look at state government from the outside. m a k e u phoW To chooSEProfessionalMakeup Brushes?Which BRuShES aRE ThE BEST?The answer is not nearly as simple as thequestion, since there are many factors thatmust be considered. The type of bristlesyou need depends on the medium you areworking with. Natural bristles work bestwith powder products and synthetic bristleswith oil based products. Powder workswell for camera work, as it doesn’t melt orshine. Therefore, most of the brushes in amedia make-up artist's kit should be madewith natural bristles. But with hundreds ofbrushes to choose from how do you knowwhich are best? Quality, not quantity, is therule. A general guideline is to look for highquality brushes created for a specific use. Most of the brushes should be dense, with asilky texture and a tapered, rounded shape. Here are my ten favorite brushes that nomake-up artist should be without.PoWdER BRuShDon't be tempted by huge, fat brushes. Theyactually defeat their intended purpose, which is to apply powder to the face. Theypick up too much powder and drop itaround. And they are too large to get into theplaces that need the most powder. The idealbrush should be fairly flat with roundededges. Not only does this give the best allover application, but it can be squeezed intoareas where shine is prevalent. In the caseof powder brushes, bigger is definitelynot better.BluSh BRuShIt is extremely importantthat your blush brush notbe too large or too small. If it's too large, the area youcover will be too wide. If thebrush is too small, you will get a stripe. Aswith all the brushes, the amount of productyou use, and the angle and pressure youapply, will greatly effect the success of theapplication.conTouR BRuShThe traditional contour brush with theflat head is not the best shape for applyingcontour. It is too wide to contour the noseand the flat shape makes stripes. You will getmuch better results with a smaller versionof the blush brush. That shape brush can besqueezed for narrow application, or used asis for subtle contouring that doesn't leavelines of demarcation.highlighT BRuShAlthough this brush is sometimes used ondifferent areas of the face, its most frequentuse is under the eyes. In order to applyenough highlight powder the brush shouldbe slightly larger thanan eye shadowbrush. Youwill getthe bestresults if it is very dense and has a roundedtip.EyEShadoW BRuShESYou will need two different types ofeyeshadow brushes. One brush should givea concentrated application around the rimof the eyes, for a smoky effect. The secondbrush needs to give a soft, even applicationover the entire eyelid, so it should be softand rounded. With these two brushes youcan create a multitude of shadow effects.EyElinER BRuShWhen cake eyeliner is needed, a tapered, fine tip brush gives a thin, precise line. Athicker line can be achieved by applyingmore pressure. This spreads the brush andwidens the line.liP BRuShFor precise application in creating asmooth lip line, you need a flat brush with astraight end. How you angle the brush whenapplying lipstick is just as important as agood quality brush.fanTail BRuShNo make-up kit is complete without aremoval brush. If a little powder eyeshadowaccidentally falls onto the cheekbone, youcan remove it with a fantail brush, usinga light outward sweep. White goat's hairbristles remove powder. Dark naturalbristles are for application.EyEBRoW BRuShThis is the only nylon brush I recommendbecause the firm bristles separate and shapethe eyebrows. It is also essential whenblending eyebrow pencil.28revia reviamagazine.com #4, SEPTEMBER 2014

Did youever notice how some of these places arethriving while others are a ghost town? Ifyou've ever set foot into a venue that sentyour senses into euphoria, I can guaranteethis did not happen by accident. All thenecessary preparations took place well inadvance to acquire a true harmony betweenmusic, sound, and lightsAs a musician, producer, DJ and musiclover, I take great pride in my career andI thank God for giving me the talent tounderstand and feel music on a differentlevel. I started at a very young age studyingpiano and vocal training. At age 15 I hadbuilt my first studio and continually keptlearning every aspect of music productionand composition. Within two months Ihad recorded my first full-length album.Production was easy for me. I amusedmyself by thinking that it will sell thousandsof copies. Needless to say I was in for arude awakening! As I look back at all theseearly years I canconfidently say thatit takes a great amount of time, preparation, and practice to learn how to create a greatsong and understanding how music iswritten to make the listener really enjoy it.In this issue I will explain howsound works and how it reflects to itssurroundings. One simple fact is that every sound wehear is made out of sound waves and noise.Every sound starts from a single sound waveand its then by bending this wave we canachieve infinite number of sounds.Over the years I have fine tuned myhearing to whereas I enter a venue I cantell right away if the sound system wasadequately adjusted for the room. Everyroom has walls, ceiling and floor. Whensound leaves speakers it makes waves andwaves vibrate the molecules in the air. Thisproduced sound travels and it bounces offof every object in the room. The emptier theroom the more the sound echoes. Next timeyou go to the movies try to notice the “deadsound” in the auditorium. This is made tomake sure no extra sounds would bouncefrom the walls or ceiling, and it makes for avery clean sound. A good way to test this isto snap your fingers in the room you are in.The bathroom has a big echo since there isusually tile, mirror and vanities made fromporcelain or plastic. These items wouldmake the sound reverb and echo a greatdeal. It always surprises me why bars, clubs, concert halls and banquet halls do not spendthe time and extra money to make roomssound better. It is not a cheap investmentbut the difference isvery noticeable. Oneof the best soundingvenues in Chicago isthe House of Blues. The mixture of woodeninterior and great soundsystem makes thismy top place to go tofor an amazing audioexperience. Make nomistake there is alwaysa human element made by fine tuning theequipment but having a proper room setupis half of the battle. One simple tip I telleveryone is to never max out volume on themusic devices. Max volume always meansdistortion. Every speaker has its limitsand smaller less expensive speakers neverproduce a loud and clean sound. I wouldlike to leave my readers with one very vitalpiece of advice and that’s to NEVER listen toloud music for a prolonged period of time. Ifyou are at a concert or even listing throughheadphones always take breaks. As we agewe begin to gradually lose hearing and bylisting to loud music constantly that processis accelerated. Hearing loss is irreversible sobe smart about how you listen to music.Next issue I will touch base about musicselection and the right songs for specifictime during the event.30revia reviamagazine.com #4, SEPTEMBER 2014
