Application DataFORM 201.21-EG1 (711)UNIT LOCATIONThe YCAV chillers are designed for outdoor installation. When selecting a site for installation, be guided by thefollowing requirements:1. Installation sites may be either on a roof or on groundlevel. (See FOUNDATION)2. Select a place having an adequate supply of fresh airfor the condensers. Recommended clearances for allunits are shown on the DIMENSIONS pages.3. Avoid locations near windows or structures wherenormal operating sounds may be objectionable.4. The standard condenser fans are propeller-type andare not recommended for use with ductwork, filtersor other impedements to airflow in the condenser airstream.5. When it is desirable to surround the unit(s), it is recommendedthat the screening be able to pass therequired chiller CFM without exceeding 0.1" externalstatic pressure.6. Protection against corrosive environments is availableby supplying the units with either copper fins, or curedepoxy-coating on the condenser coils. Epoxy-coatedcoils should be utilized with any units being installed atthe seashore, or where salt spray may hit the units, orwhere acid rain is prevalent (copper condenser coilsare not recommended where they may be exposedto acid rain).7. On installations where winter operation is intended andsnow accumulations are expected, additional elevationmust be provided to insure normal condenser air flow.FOUNDATIONThe unit should be mounted on a flat and level foundation, ground or roof, capable of supporting the entire operatingweight of the equipment. Operating weights are given inthe PHYSICAL DATA tables.Roof Locations – Adequate structural strength to safelysupport the entire weight of the unit and service personnelmust be provided. Care must be taken not to damagethe roof during installation. If the roof is “bonded”, consultbuilding contractor or architect for special installation requirements.Roof installations should incorporate the useof spring-type isolators to minimize the transmission ofvibration into building structure. Additional support shouldbe provided to the roof at the spring-isolator locations.168Ground Locations – Units must be installed on a substantialbase that will not settle and cause strain on therefrigerant lines, resulting in possible leaks. A one-piececoncrete slab, with footers extending below the frost line,is recommended. The slab should not be tied to the mainbuilding foundation as noises will telegraph.Mounting holes (5/8") are provided in the base rails forbolting the unit to its foundation. See DIMENSIONS forlocation of the mounting holes. For ground installations, precautions should be taken toprotect the unit from tampering by, or injury to, unauthorizedpersons. Fasteners on access panels will preventcasual tampering; however, further safety precautions, such as unit enclosure options, a fenced-in enclosure, orlocking devices on the panels may be advisable. Checklocal authorities for safety regulations.CHILLED LIQUID PIPINGThe chilled liquid piping system should be laid out so thatthe circulating pump discharges into the cooler. The inletand outlet cooler-liquid connections are given in DIMEN-SIONS. Hand stop valves are recommended for use inall lines to facilitate servicing. Drain connections shouldbe provided at all low points to permit complete drainageof the cooler and system piping. The cooler must be protected by a strainer, preferablyof 40 mesh, fitted as close as possible to the liquid inletconnection, and provided with a means of local isolation. The cooler must not be exposed to flushing velocities ordebris released during flushing. It is recommended that asuitably sized bypass and valve arrangement is installedto allow flushing of the piping system. The bypass can beused during maintenance to isolate the heat exchangerwithout disrupting flow to other units.Pressure-gauge connections are recommended for installationin the inlet and outlet water lines. Gauges are notprovided with the unit and are to be furnished by others.Chilled liquid lines exposed to the weather should bewrapped with a supplemental heater cable and insulated,or glycol should be added to the chilled liquid to protectagainst freezing if low-ambient periods are expected.A flow switch is available as an accessory on all units. Aflow switch must be installed in the leaving water pipingof the cooler and must not be used to start and stop theunit.JOHNSON CONTROLS
