Egilsstaðir www.fljotsdalsherad.is<br />

Egilsstaðir is one of <strong>Iceland</strong>’s youngest towns and unlike most towns<br />

it was established in 1947 by the national government. Since then<br />

Egilsstaðir has developed an extensive array of services and become<br />

the service and trade centre for most of <strong>East</strong> <strong>Iceland</strong>. <strong>The</strong> town is<br />

a centre of transportation, mainly through Egilsstaðir international<br />

Airport. Scheduled buses connect to all the villages, from Breiðdalsvík<br />

in the south to Borgarfjörður eystri, as well as to Höfn and Akureyri.<br />

Fljótsdalshérað municipality offers free bus rides between its main<br />

centres of population.<br />

locations nearby. <strong>The</strong>re are many good hotels and guesthouses,<br />

as well as restaurants to be enjoyed. <strong>The</strong> municipality provides<br />

exemplary facilities for sports, operating for example four sports halls<br />

and an artificial turf football field. Fljótsdalshérað has two swimming<br />

pools, a small one at<br />

Hallormsstaður and a<br />

great outdoor pool at<br />

Egilsstaðir, with a water<br />

slide and a children’s<br />

splash pool.<br />
