⌘ Meleyri. <strong>The</strong> black sand beach is great for<br />
strolling and bird-watching. So very different<br />
from the stony beaches north of Breiðdalsvík,<br />
where you can find beautiful polished rocks.<br />
⌘ Reindalsheiði. Hiking the well marked old post<br />
route connecting Breiðdalur to Fáskrúðsfjörður<br />
is a great way to spend a day. Allow 5-6 hours.<br />
⌘ Tinna and the forest close to the canyon of<br />
the lovely river Tinna is lined with interesting rock<br />
formations. In the forest there are tables and<br />
facilities to barbeque. Enjoy life and the beautiful<br />
view at this, just off the road, oasis. <strong>The</strong> hike along<br />
the canyon from the bridge takes about 3 hours.<br />
⌘ Stafndalur jeep track. This scenic but tough<br />
route connecting Breiðdalur with Hérað via<br />
Þórustaðadalur. It is open only in the late summer,<br />
and only for larger jeeps, as it is very steep as it<br />
winds up and down the mountain and crosses<br />
small rivers.<br />
- DJÚPIVOGUR -<br />
⌘ Papey the small island of Djúpivogur is said to<br />
be named after the Papar, the Irish monks that<br />
are believed to have been in <strong>Iceland</strong> prior to the<br />
Viking settlement. <strong>The</strong> island was inhabited for<br />
more than a thousand years, until 1966.<br />
Papey is of great interest for birdwatchers. An<br />
estimate of 30.000 couples of puffins stay there<br />
over the summertime. Papey is also the home<br />
of the Common guillemot, Eider ducks and<br />
