NATURE HIGHLIGTS<br />
⌘ Hengifoss is the 2nd highest waterfall in<br />
<strong>Iceland</strong>, 128 metres in a magnificent gorge. <strong>The</strong><br />
background of basalt lava with red intermediary<br />
layers of ancient soil give Hengifoss a unique<br />
setting and in the sandstone beneath them<br />
containing fossilized tree trunks, evidence of<br />
the much warmer climate in <strong>Iceland</strong> when this<br />
rock was formed during the Tertiary period. <strong>The</strong><br />
waterfall Litlanesfoss, only 10 minutes up from<br />
the parking, is also spectacular in a beautiful<br />
columnar basalt setting.<br />
⌘ Laugarfell. Hot natural pool in the highlands<br />
on the way to Mt. Snæfell. Known for centuries<br />
for healing power.<br />
- BORGARFJÖRÐUR EYSTRI -<br />
⌘ Borgarfjörður eystri is a haven for<br />
nature lovers. <strong>The</strong> mountains in the area are<br />
exceptionally beautiful in form and colour. It is<br />
believed to be one of the two largest rhyolite<br />
areas in <strong>Iceland</strong>. Basalt is also common. Dyrfjöll,<br />
the Door mountains reign over the fjord. <strong>The</strong><br />
drive to Borgarfjörður offers great views.<br />
⌘ Hvítserkur is one of the most peculiar<br />
and beautiful mountains in <strong>Iceland</strong>. It is largely<br />
comprised of ignimbrite, which is light in colour.<br />
<strong>The</strong> side that faces Húsavík has dark dikes<br />
criss-crossing the pale coloured face giving it<br />
a unique appearance. <strong>The</strong> mountain is popular<br />
with hikers. <strong>The</strong> route is not recommended for<br />
those with a fear of heights.
