ABENEZER KASSA<br />

2012 CORE National Student of the Year<br />

Abenezer Kassa, a member of MCH’s<br />

Class of 2012, was selected Student of<br />

the Year by the Coalition for Residential<br />

Education (CORE).<br />

As a senior in 2011-2012, Abenezer<br />

maintained a 4.10 GPA while taking<br />

four additional courses at McLennan<br />

Community College, where he was<br />

named to the Dean’s List. In addition<br />

to academics, Abenezer made community<br />

service a priority. He was selected<br />

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES PROFILE<br />

to the Waco Youth Leadership Council,<br />

where he spoke at a national conference<br />

on important issues among teenagers.<br />

He volunteered with the Waco Humane<br />

Society, Caritas, Shepherd’s Heart Food<br />

Pantry, and Keep Waco Beautiful. He<br />

was also involved in the Key Club, which h<br />

partners with other organizations in the<br />

area to provide community service.<br />

Abenezer is majoring in business at the<br />

University of Texas at Arlington.<br />

High School Graduates<br />

Forty-eight MCH students earned their<br />

high school diplomas. This includes<br />

students from the MCH charter school<br />

and public schools.<br />

Academic Honors<br />

Fifty-four students from the Waco<br />

campus and Boys Ranch were named to<br />

academic honor rolls and 29 earned a<br />

“commended” score on the TAKS test.<br />

State Education Standards<br />

MCH’s charter school was among 44<br />

percent of schools statewide that met<br />

the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)<br />

Standards.<br />

FFA / Ag Science<br />

MCH youth recorded one of their best<br />

showings ever at the Heart of Texas<br />

Livestock Show by winning second place<br />

in the sweepstakes competition in Ag<br />

Mechanics.<br />

4-H<br />

Eight youth from the Boys Ranch earned<br />

awards at the state 4-H photography<br />

competition. A.J., Brandon, Jericho and<br />

Lloyd earned fi rst-place awards.<br />

JROTC<br />

Yesenia, a junior, earned 11 awards for<br />

her accomplishments in JROTC, includ-<br />

ing Cadet of the Year.<br />

Athletics<br />

Ladashia (above), who is being served<br />

through our foster care program, earned<br />

varsity letters in track and volleyball.<br />

Chance and Calvin signed to play basketball<br />

at Temple College and McLennan<br />

Community College respectively.<br />

The football team advanced to the second<br />

round of the state playoffs. Denzel, Ty and<br />

Ben earned all-state honors.<br />

The boys basketball team fi nished second<br />

at the state tournament, and three<br />

Bulldogs – Chance, Steven and Kevin –<br />

earned all-state honors.<br />

Three members of the boys cross country<br />

team – Henok, Benny and Kevin – placed<br />

in the top 20 at the state meet.<br />

Fourteen members of the boys track<br />

team advanced to the state meet. Henok<br />

fi nished 2nd in the 3200 meters and 4th<br />

in the 1600 meters.<br />
