ABENEZER KASSA
2012 CORE National Student of the Year
Abenezer Kassa, a member of MCH’s
Class of 2012, was selected Student of
the Year by the Coalition for Residential
Education (CORE).
As a senior in 2011-2012, Abenezer
maintained a 4.10 GPA while taking
four additional courses at McLennan
Community College, where he was
named to the Dean’s List. In addition
to academics, Abenezer made community
service a priority. He was selected

to the Waco Youth Leadership Council,
where he spoke at a national conference
on important issues among teenagers.
He volunteered with the Waco Humane
Society, Caritas, Shepherd’s Heart Food
Pantry, and Keep Waco Beautiful. He
was also involved in the Key Club, which h
partners with other organizations in the
area to provide community service.
Abenezer is majoring in business at the
University of Texas at Arlington.
High School Graduates
Forty-eight MCH students earned their
high school diplomas. This includes
students from the MCH charter school
and public schools.
Academic Honors
Fifty-four students from the Waco
campus and Boys Ranch were named to
academic honor rolls and 29 earned a
“commended” score on the TAKS test.
State Education Standards
MCH’s charter school was among 44
percent of schools statewide that met
the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
Standards.
FFA / Ag Science
MCH youth recorded one of their best
showings ever at the Heart of Texas
Livestock Show by winning second place
in the sweepstakes competition in Ag
Mechanics.
4-H
Eight youth from the Boys Ranch earned
awards at the state 4-H photography
competition. A.J., Brandon, Jericho and
Lloyd earned fi rst-place awards.
JROTC
Yesenia, a junior, earned 11 awards for
her accomplishments in JROTC, includ-
ing Cadet of the Year.
Athletics
Ladashia (above), who is being served
through our foster care program, earned
varsity letters in track and volleyball.
Chance and Calvin signed to play basketball
at Temple College and McLennan
Community College respectively.
The football team advanced to the second
round of the state playoffs. Denzel, Ty and
Ben earned all-state honors.
The boys basketball team fi nished second
at the state tournament, and three
Bulldogs – Chance, Steven and Kevin –
earned all-state honors.
Three members of the boys cross country
team – Henok, Benny and Kevin – placed
in the top 20 at the state meet.
Fourteen members of the boys track
team advanced to the state meet. Henok
fi nished 2nd in the 3200 meters and 4th
in the 1600 meters.
