EDUC 302. TESOL CURRICULUM II.<br />
This course provides a working knowledge of the basic theories and<br />
instructional models and materials for teaching skills in reading, writing,<br />
speaking, and listening to students who are learning English as a<br />
second language in the classroom setting at the 6-12/adult level. Issues<br />
such as identification of students, testing, and policies regarding<br />
inclusion will be discussed. The pre-service student will demonstrate<br />
ability to plan, implement, and assess curriculum that includes current<br />
technology, materials, and community resources, giving special<br />
consideration to cultural, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic variables<br />
that affect second language learning. Students will also complete a<br />
practicum of at least 20 hours in an English as a Second Language classroom<br />
setting at the 6-12/adult level. Competency: Reading. Prerequisite:<br />
admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
EDUC 307. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND EMERGENT LITERACY.<br />
This course is designed for students interested in premedical studies,<br />
pediatrics, social work, and teaching and those students interested in<br />
developing sound parenting skills. The focus of this course is on the<br />
child from birth to eight years of age. Students will study key concepts<br />
of language development and instruction. In addition, students will<br />
engage in the study of issues related to language problems experienced<br />
by children from culturally diverse backgrounds. Competency: Writing.<br />
Prerequisite: PSYC 305. Offered every other year.<br />
EDUC 320. CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE AND MANAGEMENT.<br />
This course is designed to help future teachers to thoughtfully examine<br />
various approaches to classroom discipline and management, and<br />
to ensure that the discipline approach is consistent with the overall<br />
instructional program. Emphasis is placed on ways to make informal<br />
decisions concerning the various approaches to discipline and properly<br />
managing various aspects of the classroom; i.e., teacher-student<br />
relationships, personal philosophy, the understanding of the assumptions<br />
that undergird various discipline approaches, the physical environment,<br />
knowledge of theory and practical applications for classroom<br />
discipline and management, so that students will stay on task and<br />
maintain interest in learning. Competency: Analytical Reading. Prerequisites:<br />
PSYC 305 and EDUC 200. Offered every year.<br />
EDUC 332. CHILDREN’S LITERATURE.<br />
Provides the prospective elementary teacher as wide an exposure as<br />
