MUSIC<br />

TUSCULUM COLLEGE 2004-2005<br />

In addition to the introductory course, MUSC 101, students may<br />

choose applied study of guitar, piano, organ, or voice. All students are<br />

encouraged to participate in the choral ensembles of the College.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS—PERFORMING ORGANIZATIONS<br />

NOTE<br />

Students registering for performing organizations receive one semester<br />

hour credit for work over an entire semester (Blocks 1-4 or Blocks<br />

5-8). Students may sign up in Block 1 or 5 and will receive their grade<br />

in Blocks 4 or 8 respectively. Students will not incur an overload fee for<br />

participating in College sponsored performing organizations.<br />

MUSC 190. TUSCULUM COLLEGE CHOIR. 1 semester hour.<br />

Offered every semester. The College Choir is open to all students, faculty,<br />

and staff with an interest in choral singing. Choral literature from<br />

several musical style periods will be studied and performed, as appropriate<br />

to the skill level of the ensemble. The Choir performs a Christmas<br />

Concert and Spring Concert each year, with additional performances<br />

for area churches. The Choir may also tour in spring, depending on the<br />

level of performance excellence achieved. No previous musical background<br />

is required. Members need only to be able to match pitch. NOTE:<br />

a maximum of 8 hours combined credit from MUSC 190, 191, 192 may<br />

be applied to graduation. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.<br />

MUSC 192. TUSCULUM COLLEGE COMMUNITY CHORUS. 1 semester<br />

hour.<br />

The Tusculum College Community Chorus is open to all adults with<br />

an interest in choral singing. No audition is required. The Chorus rehearses<br />

two hours each Monday evening and performs a winter and<br />

spring concert. NOTE: a maximum of 8 hours combined credit from<br />

MUSC 190, 191, 192 may be applied to graduation.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS—ACADEMIC COURSES<br />

MUSC 101. INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN MUSIC.<br />

Specific focus on the music of western culture. Primary emphasis on<br />

the art music of the last five centuries, with additional coverage of the<br />

development of jazz in the past century. Connections will be made between<br />

the music and the societies that form its context. A small fee<br />

may be required to cover concert admission on field trips.<br />
