TUSCULUM COLLEGE 2004-2005<br />

RELIGIOUS STUDIES<br />

Religious studies is a very important part of each student’s academic<br />

preparation at Tusculum College. Students who have an interest in<br />

Religious Studies beyond the required course (RELG 302 Jerusalem),<br />

may elect to complete a minor. A student planning to minor in Religious<br />

Studies should consult with the faculty in Religious Studies to<br />

determine which courses will be of assistance, especially in the case<br />

when graduate school or seminary may be in mind.<br />

RELG 101 Old Testament<br />

RELG 102 New Testament<br />

RELG 208 Sex, Marriage and Family or RELG 201 World Religions<br />

Choose one 200 level religion course and one 300 or 400 level religion<br />

course.<br />

TOTAL: 20 semester hours<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

RELG 101. OLD TESTAMENT LITERATURE: LIFE, DEATH & THE<br />

AFTERLIFE.<br />

An exploration of the rich literature and theology in the Hebraic scripture,<br />

beginning with creation and then focusing on the biblical view of<br />

life, death, and life after death. Competency: Self-Knowledge. Offered<br />

every other year. Required of religion minors.<br />

RELG 102. NEW TESTAMENT: LIFE, DEATH & THE AFTERLIFE.<br />

The exploration of such themes as death and dying, resurrection, and<br />

the meaning of life itself in the gospels and Paul’s epistles. Competency:<br />

Self-Knowledge. Offered every other year. Required of religion minors.<br />

RELG 201. WORLD RELIGIONS.<br />

An introduction to the beliefs, practices, and underlying spiritual values<br />

of the major religions of the world, including Buddhism, Hinduism,<br />

Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Field trips to<br />

temples, a Greek Orthodox cathedral, and other religiously related institutions<br />

will be included. Competency: Public Speaking.<br />

RELG 203. RELIGION IN AMERICA.<br />

This course will analyze and observe the beliefs, rituals, and practices<br />

of religious groups in America thereby enabling the student to appreciate<br />

the varieties of religious experiences and the significance of religious<br />

experience among Americans. Field trips to churches, synagogues,<br />

and other church-related institutions will be included. Competency:<br />

Writing.<br />
