COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

SPED 101. SURVEY OF THE REGULAR & SPECIAL NEEDS POPU-<br />

LATION WITHIN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT.<br />

The pre-service education student will develop an understanding of<br />

the characteristics of the school environment and the relationship of<br />

that school environment to the total school system: local, state, and<br />

federal. In addition, the pre-service student will focus on developing<br />

the professional ‘self’ called teacher. Finally, pre-service students will<br />

survey those elements within the school that foster the education of<br />

regular and special school populations within the school. Practicum<br />

included. Students will study current practices, issues, and trends in<br />

Special Education Law and Policy to prepare to serve the special needs<br />

population in regular and special education school environments.<br />

Competency: Writing. Offered every year.<br />

SPED 350. THEORY MODIFIED AND COMPREHENSIVE EC/K-4.<br />

SPED 351. THEORY MODIFIED AND COMPREHENSIVE 5-8/Sec.<br />

The two courses, SPED 350 & 351, are specifically designed for preservice<br />

teachers working with the student with mild handicaps and<br />

the student who has moderate to severe handicaps. The first course<br />

will focus on the young child from birth, through early years and into<br />

school. The second course will be directed to the child in the middle<br />

school years and high school. Students will have opportunities to study<br />

classical theory as well as reviewing current literature. While this course<br />

is not tied to a practicum, pre-service teachers will observe children at<br />

different age levels and exhibiting various differences. Students will<br />

have opportunities to speak with community and school personnel<br />

that serve children with mild and moderate to severe handicaps. Competency<br />

SPED 350: Public Speaking. Offered every other year.<br />

SPED 352. DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES.<br />

This course is presented in a seminar format and provides the student<br />

with an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with the therapists<br />

presenting the seminar. Among such professionals will be an occupational<br />

and physical therapist, speech therapist, and for the young child,<br />

the developmental specialist. These courses include clinical experiences<br />

in various settings, including the school, giving continuity to the seminar.<br />

The focus is on individuals with severe handicapping conditions<br />

that require occupational and physical therapy and speech therapy.<br />

Competency: Public Speaking. Prerequisite: SPED 350 or SPED 351.<br />

Offered every other year.<br />
