Training
Turning, machining, drilling – these were the
important work processes for which the
trainees at MTU were trained in past decades.
But while such individual skills were
once the core of our training, today we
focus on the production process as a whole.
This approach has consequences not only
for exam subjects; it also means that even a
trainee acquires an eye for the multifaceted
process by which an aero engine is produced.
We teach trainees to master an entire
segment of this complex production process
on the basis of the latest tool and control
system technology. The ensuing exam tests
not a specific technique, but rather mastery
of the production process for a certain component.
This change in approach is applicable to more
than technical occupational training. In spite
of the complexity of our business – or rather,
precisely due to that complexity – it is of
seminal importance that our employees not
feel isolated in a small sector of the company.
Once employees acquire a sense of the
big picture at MTU, they will see the farreaching
consequences of their own professional
activities and understand the importance
of every employee’s engagement in
the effort to perpetuate the success story of
our company and ensure our continued competitiveness
on the international market.
A top-quality, high-tech product such as an
aero engine can only be produced and maintained
by a team of highly specialized experts.
Their skills and knowledge must be
acquired over years and decades, beginning
with the strong foundation of a training program.
It is thus of central importance to our
company that we focus in our training programs
on those constellations of professional
skills that consort closely with our production
processes, as well as on expeditious
specialization and employability.
Thus, we have departed from the practice of
earlier decades by concentrating our training
programs around technical fields primarily
related to our own products. The percentage
of trainees among the staff of our German
locations was 5.1 in 2009, a slight increase
in comparison to previous years.
