Examples and case studies have been adapted for the Asian context to make the study of biomedical ethics more approachable for readers in Asia. The book facilitates the study of contemporary biomedical ethics within the contexts of each reader’s religion and culture. Health care students and professionals (physicians, nurses, and co-medicals), along with ethicists, lawyers, and researchers can readily use the book to learn the key concepts of biomedical ethics and immediately apply that knowledge to their work. Each chapter consists of sections that provide background information and provoke analysis, and these help readers break down the cases and encourage an informed discussion. Akabayashi, Kodama, and Slingsby have designed the book as a useful introductory tool to learn biomedical ethics. With its workbook style, it can be used for both individual and group study. Its easy-to-follow format facilitates the study of biomedical ethics and the dynamic process of applying its key concepts to the practice of medicine and research in the Asian context. The Authors Akira Akabayashi (MD, PhD) is Professor in the Department of Biomedical Ethics at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine and Director of UT-CBEL (University of Tokyo Center of Biomedical Ethics and Law). His research interests include cross-cultural bioethics, informed consent, end-of-life issues, research ethics, bioethics policy, and clinical ethics. Professor Akabayashi serves as Chair of the Ethics Committee at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine. He is also a member of several government bioethics policy committees in Japan. He is an associate editor for BMC Medical Ethics, a consulting editor for Asian Bioethics Review, on the editorial boards of the Journal of Medical Ethics and Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Japan Association for Bioethics. He is also a Fellow of the Hastings Center. Satoshi Kodama (PhD) is Lecturer at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. He is also a member of the Patient Complaint and Ethics Consultation Center at the University of Tokyo Hospital. His background is in moral and political philosophy. His research interests include ethical theory in bioethics, resource allocation, brain death and organ transplantation, end-of-life issues, stem cell research, and public health ethics. B.T. Slingsby (MD, PhD, MPH) co-founded Equity Editors Association in 2007 as a market-based solution to generating funds for global health entities. He was also involved with the founding of ProEdit Japan, Inc. and UJMED. Dr. Slingsby has served as an invited assistant professor at Keio University, a Freeman Research Fellow at the School of Medicine in Hawaii, a special research fellow at the University of Tokyo and an adjunct assistant professor at Kyoto University. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in English and Japanese in journals including Academic Medicine, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Journal of Public Health, and The Lancet (Pubmed references). Dr. Slingsby graduated from Brown University with honors, earned his Masters and Doctorate from Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo, and received his Medical Doctorate from the George Washington University.
