Rail in the North
R
ail activity in the North of
England and Scotland has
experienced a welcome boost
from contract wins with Strathclyde
Passenger Transport (SPT) and
Network Rail.
The Glasgow Subway operated by
SPT has been allocated significant
funding for the upgrade of stations
and rolling stock. The Livingston
office has won, and is on-site
delivering the refurbishment of the
first of the stations at Hillhead in
Glasgow. The station serves the busy
and fashionable West End of Glasgow
and Glasgow University making it one
of the busiest on the system.
The Clancy Docwra team is working
constant night shifts to carry out a
full refurbishment including ceiling,
wall and floor finishes, electrical
installation, relocation of ticket offices
and retail units, escalators and new
external security and finishes.
The stations have not been
refurbished for several decades and
this, coupled with tight working
conditions and the need to hand the
station back each morning fit for
operation adds to the complexity of
the project. The bid value was £1.2
million and successful performance
could pave the way for further
awards as the station programme
continues over the next few years.
Steve Meikle, Operations Manager
said “the project is really picking up
momentum now and we are working
closely with the client and other
team members. We look forward to
the possibility of putting all we have
learned into practice on future jobs”.
In addition to winning a contract with
Network Rail to upgrade a series of
relay rooms in Central Scotland
(£150k) the Rail team has had a
| STRONG |
major breakthrough in winning the
Geneva Junction (£800k) and LNE
Culverts contracts (£200k).
Geneva Junction is an embankment
stabilisation job whilst the culverts
will have a work scope refurbishing
and replacing culverts in locations at
Carlisle, Selby and Sheffield. Regional
Manager Paul Eadington said “we are
delighted with these breakthrough
wins and are focussed on delivering
well for the client with the prospect
of some follow-on work”.
TPS Lot 3B General
Building Framework
Awarded in 2010 this 5 year
framework agreement covers
general building works at
stations and depots for SSL and BCV
who are responsible for two thirds of
the LUL network.
Projects are competitively bid by four
contractors with a very high volume of
schemes ranging from reactive
maintenance to medium sized
projects, all requiring a fast
turnaround for pricing and delivery.
Project Managers Kevin Barrett and
James Carty take a proactive hands
on role in all aspects of the
framework, with their dedicated
commercial and site teams now
delivering around £1.0m of contracts
annually.
It is with sadness we report the
sudden death of Derek
O’Sullivan aged 29, the eldest
son of Rail Project Manager
Dermot O’Sullivan.
Our sympathies are extended to
Dermot and his wife Jenny,
Derek’s brother Gary and his
sisters Aóife and Emér.
