Preview of Pre-Conference on Organic Liquor
Greeting
It is my honor
and pleasure to invite
you to attend
the 17th IFOAM
Organic World
Congress (OWC
2011) in the Republic of Korea. Every three years
IFOAM gathers the organic community together
to meet new and old friends, exchange information
and knowledge, and build a shared experience
and vision for an organic world.
The OWC 2011 for the first time is to be held
in Asia and our hosts, the Gyeonggi Province,
Namyangju City and the Korean Federation for

community
Sustainable Agriculture are preparing an event
that showcases their history, aspirations, beauty
and culture. As well, the sessions and seminars of
the OWC 2011 are planned to explore, debate and
identify how organic practices address the urgent
need for sustainable solutions to poverty, food insecurity,
soil erosion, biodiversity decline and climate
change. This is a unique opportunity to
come face to face and experience the power of
our community as a global network advocating
for diverse healthy, fair, agro-ecological systems.
Please join me at the OWC 2011 - your participation
will make this an exciting, engaging and
fun occasion.
In conference on “Organic Liquor” participants
can taste organic wine from many
countries and Korean traditional liquor
The pre-conference on organic liquor will be held
from September 26 to 27 in Yangpyeong, Korea’s
ecological agriculture zone with superb, intact natural
scenery.
A large number of participants including organic
liquor experts at home and abroad and concerned
groups are expected to attend this conference. A forum
for discussions on: the current state of world organic
wines, trends in research and development of
world distilled liquors, and the state of Korea’s makgeolli
(unrefined rice liquor) industry (and its efforts
towards development) will be arranged.
The pre-conference will offer a great time to participants
as they can see and sample the organic wines
made in numerous countries around the world and the
traditional Korean wines that were rated highly in
various domestic wine fairs.
Bio-tours will take place after the academic conference.
For example, visitors can stop by one of the
oldest Korean breweries, Jipyeong Brewery, that has
stayed in the family for three generations. Another
option is Yangpyeong Mulberry Farming
Cooperatives, an eco-friendly mulberry tree cluster
that produces certified organic mulberry wine. There
is also the Farm of Autumnal Fragrance which, for
the first time in Korea, acquired an organic certification
in Korean jang (pastes), and several other biotour
destinations.

Organic World Congress in 2011 will be able to
experience the unique history of Asian agriculture
and the dynamic market of organic agriculture in
Korea. Special thematic organic conferences, organic
farm visits and cultural tours are planned to
showcase Korea.
I would like to harmonize oriental philosophies
and western technologies to strengthen organic
agriculture in the world. With the hosting of the
17th IFOAM Organic World Congress, Korea
will make a quantum leap in the development of
organic agriculture and in efforts to provide safer
food to the Korean consumers.
