Let’s Go on a
Subway Trip!
Koreans and foreigners alike know the Korean subway for its cleanliness and
convenience. Many visitors from abroad comment on the strong impression it
makes. But did you know that Seoul subway lines reach Gyeonggi-do, Incheon
metropolitan city, Chungcheong-do and Gangwon-do? Using Seoul’s subway you
can go to tourist spots famous for beautiful scenery and delicious food without
having to take long distance transportation like buses, trains, or airplanes.
If you visit Seoul and want to get out of the city but don’t have enough time, why
not to travel by subway? Making reservations for places to stay won’t cause you
any headaches and you can leave your heavy backpack in your room in Seoul.
Go to the Seashore!
Incheon: You can enjoy beautiful sea
and lots of delicious food
Short Trip to China, Chinatown
If you want to see a miniature China in Korea, go
to Chinatown in front of the Incheon subway station.
There are many Chinese restaurants where you can
eat jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles) with a
more than a century-long history and stores where
you can buy Chinese souvenirs, traditional items,
food, and liquor.
Jajangmyeon can be regarded as one of the first fusion
foods - it originated in China but by adding
sweet caramel sauce to salty black bean paste it has
developed into something far different from the
Chinese version. The price for a serving is quite reasonable
- about 5000 won.
Once you’ve bought traditional Chinese clothes for
women or babies and ate a bowl of jajangmyeon,
you’ve completed the most important tasks on the
“to-do in Chinatown” list.
Must eat: jajangmyeon and dumplings
In China town in
Incheon-si, you
can experience a
Exciting Date Course, Wolmido
Wolmido is a theme park of Incheon, where one
can experience exciting rides - Viking (a pirate ship),
Disco, and so on - watch the sea, and ride a cruise
ship. Accompanied by the funny jokes of a Korean
DJ, the vertiginous Viking and Disco rides are the
two big stars of Wolmido! Even if you don’t understand
Korean and decide just to watch from the
stands, you’ll have lots of fun gazing at people tumbling
and floundering (there is no danger at all) in
Disco.
When you are done with the rides, let’s go to the
seaside. Looking at the horizon on the sea and the
fishermen enjoying the sounds of waves will bring
peace to your mind. If you want to see more, how
about taking a cruise - Before boarding the boat,
don’t forget to buy a pack of snacks to feed seagulls!
Must eat: haemultang (spicy seafood stew)
Full of Food, Shinpo Market
Shinpo is the most famous outdoor market of
Incheon and the most popular food here is dakgangjeong,
or fried chicken seasoned with a sweet and
spicy sauce (made of gochugjang, sugar, and other ingredients).
A long line of people is always there waiting
to get it. Dakgangjeong with a bottle of cold beer
will give you one more special Korean memory.
* Warning! Some restaurants prepare dakgangjeng
very hot, so ask them to serve you a milder one when
you order. The market is full of foods - including
jjinbbang (a steamed bun with red-bean paste filling),
so don’t worry if you don’t enjoy the chicken.
Must eat: dakgangjeong
