Dear Friends,
In this annual report we are pleased to highlight a wide-ranging conversation
between members of our Board of Trustees and current student leaders at
Mount de Sales, the fruit of a breakfast meeting the students hosted for the
board earlier this spring. As the Board and the administration move forward
together in updating our strategic plan, the Board recognizes how important
it is to be in touch with the experiences and concerns of our students and
teachers. The hard work of the Board of Trustees, as well as the tireless
dedication of our talented faculty and staff, is yielding great results. This past year has been
a full one, packed with many improvements and activities. Here is just a sampling from the
2011-2012 school year that demonstrates how we achieve our goal of academic excellence in the
Catholic tradition. As you read below, keep in mind that we are successful in large part because
of the generous donors who are recognized in our Honor Roll of Donors.

Because the Mount de Sales
community showed such incredible
passion for the success of Phase I, it
endorses the mission of the school
and helps ensure that MDSA will be
here for the next 160 years.
Why was Phase I an important
launching point for our Campaign?
Phase I was crucial because of the
convent. The Sisters are an integral
part of the formation of the students
and important in carrying out the
mission of the school. Without the
convent, we would not be able
to accommodate the Sisters in a
hospitable environment. Also,
Phase I identified three basic needs
of the school, and the fact that we
were able to complete Phase I in
such a short period of time gave
confidence to the community that
we could accomplish anything.
How does Phase I impact the lives
and experiences of MDSA students?
In my opinion, we identified some
of the minor issues that the school
needed to address that would have
some of the greatest impact on the
girls and give them the ability to
thrive at the school. The completion
of Phase I will continue to impact
the lives of the students here for
many, many years to come.

The completion of Phase I proves
we can achieve bigger dreams. It
was a big achievement and shows
that anything can be done here at
MDSA. It also puts Phase III, the
Fine Arts Building, that much closer,
which is very important to me as a
member of the orchestra.
What does the success of Phase I
tell you about the next 160 years at
Mount de Sales Academy?
God will always be with us in
everything we do. It speaks to
Divine Providence, which will also
always be present at Mount de
Sales Academy.
Why was Phase I an important
launching point for our Campaign?
The Sisters are the backbone of our
school, so Phase I allows the Sisters
to prosper and continue to teach
and form the students of Mount de
Sales.
How does Phase I impact the lives
and experiences of MDSA students?
The environment is different! The
classroom temperatures are so
much better. Therefore, it is much
easier to focus on class. I am
happy with no more changing from
blazer to coats just to keep warm.
It makes me really glad to see the
changes because it shows the future
is bright and school will continue
to do great when my class has
graduated.

Who is on the field team? The Board of Trustees and sub-committees for Facilities and
Development are directing Phase II as they did with the very successful Phase I. Sanders Design
and Century Engineering, both of whom were involved in The Constance and Samuel Pistorio
Sports Complex and new convent, are captains of the athletic field team. Ripken Design has also
consulted on the field.

and opportunities for the entire
student body, while enhancing our
already vibrant school spirit.

PHASE II: The Xs and Os with Sister Philip Joseph, O.P.
Why an artificial turf field? Everything we do is directly related
to our mission, one aspect of which is nurturing the "whole
person." Physical fitness, team competition, and school spirit are
all encompassed in our responsibility to our students. Beyond the
60% of our students who participate in at least one sport, each and
every Sailor will be positively impacted by the athletic field. Physical
Education, a requirement for all students, will utilize the field for
classes. The field will also be used for Spirit Day, Fall Festival, and
other student activities. The field will create a multi-season, safe,
recreation space for all students.
The current athletic field, which was constructed in 1981, has always
had drainage and other topography issues. The field is especially bad
in the spring. Due to poor conditions, the 2011 lacrosse team, who was
once again unable to tryout on the field, hosted only two home games.
Field Hockey was also impacted by divots and ruts throughout the
field that, at best, made play difficult and, at worst, created safety
hazards.
As well as serving as the competition home for the lacrosse and
field hockey teams, soccer and softball will be “home” for the first
time in their histories. Additionally, the field is being designed with
maximum utilization in mind so that as many teams as possible will
benefit from the field. These teams include, but are not limited to:
winter indoor track, outdoor track, and cheerleading.
What is the game plan? Phase II, the artificial turf field with seating
and spectator amenities, including plazas and restrooms, is a $1.5
million project. This achievable goal is ambitious when you consider
that Phase I, which raised $5 million for the convent, HVAC, and
security, was completed on June 30, 2011. Many of the generous donors
who supported Phase I are fulfilling their pledges with multi-year gifts.
Therefore, we need those who did not give to Phase I, as well as Phase
I donors who are able to do so, to participate in Phase II.
Alumnae, current and past parents, and other friends of Mount de
Sales Academy, we need you! Please consider how you can join the
team. This project offers recognition opportunities such as field and
plaza naming, and “buying seats”*.

When will the first whistle sound? A lot of construction noise will be heard before fans cheer
on the Sailors from the hillside seating. The goal is to begin construction at the end of the lacrosse
season and have the field usable in time for the 2012-2013 school year and the fall soccer and field
hockey seasons.

Class Giving

The Class of 2005, former
Sailors who are now in their
mid-twenties, see Phase II as
an opportunity to reunite. At a place already full of history, Mount de
Sales is yet again writing another great chapter for Sailors.
Jennifer (Jenny) Hackett '05 has always been a leader of the class. She
is now taking charge to make sure the Class of 2005 gives back to our
beloved Mount de Sales.
Phase II includes built-in hillside stadium seating and individual seats
that may be named for a $1,000 donation, a goal easily attainable for the
113 young women of '05.
Jenny wrote to her classmates, “The natural allure of Mount de Sales
comes from not only the history of the school, but also the family,
the Dominican Sisters, alumnae, students, faculty, staff, and parents.
Named recognition is a rare honor on our campus, and a class as
legendary as ours should take advantage of it!”
The Class of 2005 responded positively to the goal that was set and
is well on their way to achieving it. Melissa Darmody ’05 says, “It
means so much more to give back to Mount de Sales when I know the
classmates I love are doing so as well."
The Class of 2005 is not alone in this quest. The Classes of 2004 and
2006 both have stepped up and are in the process of organizing their
own class gifts to Phase II.
In Jenny’s letter she notes, “It is up to us to support our school and
ensure that women who follow us have some of the same wonderful

The most significant change is
that we will be able to play on the
field all year long. Last lacrosse
season we rarely got to play on the
field, which was a disadvantage

What is the most unique feature
of a Mount de Sales Academy
education?
The Dominican Sisters and the
Christ-centered education. There is
a unique spirit of love, enthusiasm,
and friendship.
How would you best describe the
distinctiveness of Mount de Sales
Academy’s mission to someone
unfamiliar with the school?
It is an environment where students
are reminded of their eternal destiny
and of being important as human
beings. Students are reminded daily
of their dignity as children of God.
As a leader of this school, how do
you promote the individuality of
Mount de Sales Academy?
Externally, I promote the
religious aspect and academic
accomplishments. Internally, I
promote the school by working
with and helping the school foster
the accomplishments of a very
impressive administration and
faculty.
What sets apart a Mount de Sales
Academy Alumna?
A Mount de Sales Academy alumna
is well prepared for college and
beyond. She has a solid sense of
who she is.
At the collegiate level, Field Hockey is played exclusively on turf
and is a different game on grass than turf. We are so excited and
grateful that MDSA is building a turf field. The new field will
enable our athletes to advance to greater heights at a higher level of
competition. Safety concerns regarding the ball traveling upwards
off of a dip on the field, or an ankle rolling off the same dip, will no
longer be an issue with the completion of Phase II.
Our 2011 season began, as always, under the sweltering August heat,
with tryouts on our bumpy field. After the teams were chosen, we
hit the ground running. Practices were hard but fun, and the strong
work ethic and team chemistry were apparent from the start. We
took the season one day at a time, one game at a time. Our schedule
included playing multiple top 20 teams and we began to amass a
winning record. In conference, we won our division and entered
the playoffs as top seed. We won both the quarter and semi-finals
at home and advanced to the Championships on the turf field at
Goucher College.
The Championship was a hard fought game with the only goal coming
in the first seven minutes, but at the end of 60 minutes, Mount de
Sales had brought home our first ever Championship victory! All of
the Sisters came to our game, bringing with them the balloons from
the Open House. The Sisters were an integral part of our season and
their presence and support meant so much to our team.

Only 13 goals scored
against; and 13 of our
16 wins were shutouts!
There were multiple
honors bestowed on
individuals of this
team, but the bottom
line is that the
Championship was
won by all 16 players.
Though this team
will never forget
the Championship
game, they won’t
remember all the
scores or all the
other games. What
they will remember
are their teammates
and being part of
something greater
than themselves, a
team.
It is both a joy and
privilege to coach the
Sailors and I know I
will always treasure
our Championship

might be interested in investing in Mount de Sales. We respectfully and humbly ask
that you help make PHASE II a win so that Mount de Sales Academy may continue to
form young women who display good sportsmanship, understand and appreciate the
value of hard work, and are leaders both on and off the field. GO SAILORS!
The week of January 16 th saw classes full of
fun and learning when the MD BioLab rolled
its way onto campus. The BioLab is a tractor
trailer containing a high-tech laboratory, and
it travels to Maryland high schools to promote
"science literacy," as its website states.
"I had to sign up for the BioLab visit way back in
August," said Ms. Sargo, Science Department
Co-Chair. "The BioLab only comes to our area
every five years, so the students won't have the
opportunity to participate in it again for quite
some time."
The BioLab program was launched in 2003 by
the MDBio Foundation to "attract tomorrow's
scientific researchers and enhance inquirybased
science experiences for Maryland high
school students," according to the website's
mission page. Since its beginning in 2003,
the MDBio Foundation has contributed
more than three million dollars towards the
BioLab, purchasing state-of-the-art equipment
and hiring experienced scientists to run the
experiments. The activities students can
participate in at the BioLab include DNA
extraction, agarose gel electrophoresis,
restriction enzyme digests, polymerase chain
reaction (PCR), transformation, and protein
quantification.
"It was a really neat experience because we were
able to work with professional scientists and
high-tech equipment," said Madison Bolesta '13.
Working on the BioLab gave students the
opportunity to experience the cutting edge
technology currently being used by scientists
today. The students used this technology to
learn how to handle oil spill cleanups, create
new or modify current alternative fuels,
research wildlife forensics, conduct a crime
scene investigation, and diagnose sickle cell
disease, among other things.

discovered as the school’s best kept
secret?
First, the Fine Arts Department is
so accomplished! This is a surprise
because it is not the most prominent
feature of the school, yet it is
excellent. Dance, music, studio arts
are wonderful. Second, the Sisters.
Third, the cookies in the library.
What is the most unique feature
of a Mount de Sales Academy
education?
It is centered on Christ and the
teachers are focused on each and
every student. MDSA is a very oneon-one
environment.
How would you best describe the
distinctiveness of Mount de Sales
Academy’s mission to someone
unfamiliar with the school?
Mount de Sales forms student
with strong morals, who strive
for academic excellence, civic
responsibility, mental and physical
balance, and are well-developed
personally and socially.
As a leader of this school, how do
you promote the individuality of
Mount de Sales Academy?
I love the unique history and fun
traditions. We also have a group
of student leaders who take
charge and organize large student
events, fostering excitement and

The MDSA Board of Trustees is beginning the formal
process of creating our school’s strategic plan. Why is
this necessary and an important task?
The strategic plan will let us grow in an orderly fashion.
It will tell us where we want to be in three to five years
and how we will get there.
What is your greatest hope for the outcome of the
strategic plan?
To establish goals and to anticipate what might happen
in the future. This includes considering threats before we
might be faced with them.
How will your group help to execute the strategic plan?
The Trustees will be the overseers of the strategic plan.
We will do what we can to meet the goals set forth in
the plan. We do this through giving our time, talent,
and treasure.
How will the strategic plan help to build MDSA into an
even stronger provider of Academic Excellence in the
Catholic Tradition?
We will have more buy-in from constituents, including
students and alumnae, who will be a part of the
planning.

That Mount de Sales Academy can maintain strong
Catholic presence while moving forward with technology
but without losing the historical essence of the school.
How will your group help to execute the strategic plan?
Beyond MDSA, as students or alumnae, to represent

Learning Differences Program Launches for the 2012 - 2013 Academic Year
The Sacred Heart Program
In seeking to respond more fully to our mission of forming young women
in a way that nurtures the whole person, Mount de Sales is launching a new
initiative called The Sacred Heart Program. This program will provide
academic supports and instruction to meet the specialized needs of collegebound
students with identified language-based learning disabilities.
Named after the devotion that is beloved both in the Visitation and
Dominican traditions, The Sacred Heart Program will provide academic
support and remediation for continued improvement of academic skills as
well as enable the student to discover her learning strengths, build on these
strengths, and advocate for her needs.
• This program is a four-year program that addresses the individual needs
for each of its students.
• Students in the program will have one class period, either every day
or every other day depending on her schedule, called the Sacred Heart
Session. During this session she will report to a learning support center
to meet with program staff for individual and/or small group instruction.
Part of this session may also be used as a study period.
• Sacred Heart Program staff will construct weekly lesson plans for each
student, addressing each student’s individual needs.
• The focus of this class time will be individualized to each student and will
include working on improving academic skills, remediation, assistance
with class work, study skills, time management, organizational skills,
and test-taking strategies.
• Note-taking strategies will be introduced, organized, and checked
regularly. The program instructors will ensure that copies of notes are
available from each teacher.
• Students in the program will not be required to take a foreign language.
However, they may take a foreign language as an elective if they so
desire.
• Students will be placed in courses based on their academic abilities and
strengths, which may include Concept Classes, College Prep Level
II, and/or Honors classes. Students are expected to complete all the
course work and meet the requirements for a particular course with
accommodations and the support of program staff.
• There will be frequent and consistent communication between home
and the program staff to assure that parents are kept abreast of the
student’s academic progress. There will also be frequent communication
between program staff and teachers. Program staff is available to assist
teachers with implementing accommodations in the classroom and to
help identify and address any concerns in the classroom.
• Any academic issues regarding your daughter should be addressed to
the Sacred Heart Program team. Personal or emotional issues need to be
addressed by her assigned guidance counselor.

At Mount de Sales, faith is central
but goes beyond religion class. The
Chapel is the center of the school.
There are frequent opportunities for
Adoration and Confession. We also
have the daily witness of the Sisters,
who want the students to be the best
at all they do.
How can Mount de Sales Academy
improve and strengthen the quality
of Catholic education for our young
women?
By offering an even greater variety
of religion classes, such as, religion
in politics and the place it has, or
religious roots of law.
What is the single most important
thing parents need to know about
the value of a Catholic education,
as it pertains to Mount de Sales
Academy?
The formation is irreplaceable.
The faculty and staff are good
role models of faith; not just good
teachers. Students are being
molded into good Christian women.
For many, the expense of a Catholic
education is a sacrifice. Why do
you think it is worth it?
Simply put, formation as a good

How do the leaders of Mount de Sales
Academy help to ensure this job will be
successfully executed?
As the Trustees of MDSA, our job
is to help identify and provide the
administration, teachers, and students
the tools and resources they need to be
successful in whatever their future holds.
Explain how our school’s mission and
vision differentiate us from other high
schools. What is the unique product we
provide?
Mount de Sales Academy provides a
community focused on the longer term
development of the whole student. The
presence of the Dominican Sisters is
a blessing to the school community;
it makes us unique. MDSA produces
women who are confident and
comfortable with themselves; they are role
models who are able to lead by example.
How will MDSA continue to grow over
the next 160 years and provide a quality
education seeped in Catholic tradition?
Our growth will come from engaging
with the growing number of MDSA
alumnae and leveraging that relationship
to further the reputation of the school,
as well as gain knowledge from our
alumnae to continue to enhance the
MDSA experience. Our future growth is
predicated on making sure Mount de
Sales continues providing the experiences
students have come to expect and
adapting to the needs of our students
while maintaining the Catholic Tradition
and quality education that we owe to our

To grow in generosity, one must have

it. As stated in our mission, Mount de Sales
Academy provides an education that “nurtures
the whole person.” That means teaching
the virtues and presenting opportunities to
grow in them. Your Participation Matters
allows our students, along with philanthropic
ambassadors, to lead the way in practicing this

The Smyth Family has been associated with
Mount de Sales Academy for more than twenty
years. Mr. Francis X. Smyth, former Trustee,
was introduced to us through his uncle, Henry
J. Knott, Jr. Mr. Knott and his

MDSA?
Family involvement gives the
student confidence to know that
her entire family cares about what
she's doing. It will inspire and
encourage her to keep up with her
faith and academics. The school

functions keeping them updated on
their daughter or granddaughter's
accomplishments.
What have you learned through
your volunteerism at MDSA?
The students bring an abundance of
knowledge to class, are extremely
smart, and the chapel is truly the
heart of MDSA. The Sisters are
our greatest asset and they inspire
academic excellence and faith.
For parents and grandparents
looking for ways to get involved at
MDSA, what do you suggest?
In addition to monetary support,
parents and grandparents can join
the Parents’ Club and attend all the
functions they are invited to. The
most important thing is to always
be involved in YOUR Sailor’s social
and academic life.
What lessons can parents and
grandparents teach or share by
getting involved at MDSA?
Involvement shows that you believe
in your Sailor and you believe in the
school. Display confidence in her so
she has the support to truly succeed
in academics and further her faith.

Mount de Sales Academy.
The Board’s focus is on the big
picture. We aren’t involved in the
daily administration of the school.
Our primary responsibility is forging
the direction that the school takes
in terms of overall items, such as
size of student body, involvement
in raising funds for the school, and
working on updating the five and ten
year strategic plan.
How do the leaders envision the
next 160 years of Mount de Sales
Academy’s future?
To stay current with respect to
curriculum, technology, teaching
methods, and the physical plant,
while protecting what’s special about
the school in terms of spirituality,
camaraderie of girls with respect to
being an all girl school. We see our
role as protectors of the traditions
but also making sure the school stays
up-to-date and competitive with the
product and process.
As a leader at Mount de Sales
Academy, how are you able to help
execute the mission of our school?
By constantly talking about the
school to potential donors, students,
parents, people who I think would
be an asset to the school; essentially
as an ambassador for the school.

I am the lucky beneficiary of the
installation of air conditioning
in the 1852 Building! I've also
witnessed the plans for the artificial
turf field, and watched the school's
overall growth during my four years
here.

What is the biggest area for
technology growth at Mount de
Sales Academy?
We have the opportunity to
integrate technology into the
curriculum, resulting in a more
engaging and interactive experience
for both teachers and students. We
could do this with use of internet in
the science classrooms, enabling
students to interact with other

or science centers. The goal is to
develop students who are wellprepared

The Parents’ Club provides many fun ways to
make an impact at Mount de Sales Academy
for the benefit of our students. As Meghan
states, parent involvement is essential in
making the child’s educational experience
as good as possible. And, the Parents’ Club
supports Mount de Sales in all aspects of the
execution of our mission.
The work of the Parents’ Club and the

We should lead by example with
social networking outside of school.
Ask, "How do I represent myself and
my school publicly?" There is an
opportunity for responsible use of
video chat technology for tutoring.
How do you see technology at
Mount de Sales Academy growing
over the next few years?
Technology is constantly changing,
so there is always room for growth
within the classroom. Teachers
should be empowered to continue
using technology such as Smart
Boards, computers, laptops,
particularly in AP courses in ways
such as making notes accessible
online. There are plenty of ways
in which using technology can
decrease financial liability, such as
online textbooks.

Mount de Sales will remain faithful
to the Catholic Church and
teachings of Saint Francis de Sales.
Mount de Sales Academy will
continue to act as a beacon guiding
others. The school instills an inner
compass to the Lord.
What is the single most important
change that you see as necessary
for the continued growth and
success of Mount de Sales
Academy?
A Performing Arts Building is
definitely the most important
change! With Music, Art, and Dance
Classes, our space constraints are
tough and more space is needed.
Other areas for change and growth
include advanced technology and
maintaining our beautiful, historic
building. In terms of the school's
growth, it is also important to find
sources of income outside of tuition
and help families afford a Mount de
Sales Academy education.
What do you see as potential
areas for growth at Mount de Sales
Academy?
I would like to see more Fine Arts
offerings and additional electives
offered in the curriculum such as
the "survival skills" of cooking and
time management. I would also like
to see a program for students with
learning differences.*

How do the Dominican Sisters
play a role in guiding Mount de
Sales Academy and continuing the
traditions of the Visitation Sisters,
who founded MDSA?
The Dominican Sisters have done
an incredible job of picking up
where the Visitation Sisters left
off when they retired from Mount
de Sales. The Dominicans have
seamlessly put their own stamp on
how they lead the school. It’s more
than running a school, it is their
life's mission.
In what way(s) do the students
of Mount de Sales Academy
benefit the most from the Sisters’
administration of MDSA?
The students benefit from seeing
what I call a “counter cultural”
lifestyle lived in front of them.
There’s a Sister for everybody! The
Sisters love each and every student.
And they don’t do it by preaching
from a pulpit but by example, right
in front of you.
How do you think the presence of
the Dominican Sisters at Mount de
Sales Academy will help to shape
the school over the next 160 years?
The Sisters help to shape the
school by keeping it faithful to the
traditions that the Visitation Sisters
established. Their integrity means
that they would never steer the

Each year since 2005, as graduation nears, the
Office of Alumnae Relations hosts the Senior
class for a special luncheon in Alumnae Hall.
This event serves as an official welcome into the
Alumnae Association and the seniors are invited

our young Alumnae.

the class leaders in 2008 asked if they could

Through mentoring students. There

as teachers. I also enjoy when

Our traditional ring. Also, the
Miraculous Medal holds a special
place in my heart. And, I’ll never
forget my uniform jumper.
Mount de Sales Academy has
fostered traditions over the past
160 years. How do you envision the
school’s traditions continuing and
growing over the next 160 years?
New traditions will come along with
growth and new facilities for our
school. When I was a student, the
B-side of the building was cloistered
and we had art on the 3 rd floor
A-side. I also remember driving
around the circle 80 times my
senior year.
Which MDSA tradition captures the
absolute essence and spirit of the
school?
The white dresses. I can't wait to see
my own daughter wear her white
graduation dress this year!
Also, wearing a uniform at an allgirls
school helps keep the focus
on learning, the community, and
the sisterhood. Uniforms allow all
students to focus on what is inside,
using the mind and one's abilities.

Marian Williams Roman '67 was selected as
the University of Kentucky's College of
Nursing Alumni Association's Outstanding
Alum for 2011. The award was presented
this past October during a Homecoming

Holly Bentz Cox '87 and her husband, Jim,
welcomed their second child, Eleanor Ann,
on February 2, 2011. She joins big brother,
James, age 9.
In May 2011, Heather Johnson Schell '88 P'15,
graduated from Loyola University with a
M.Ed. in Catholic Leadership. She teaches
middle school science at Immaculate
Conception School in Towson. This May,
Heather and her high school sweetheart,
Cholly, will celebrate their 19 year
anniversary. Their daughter, Christina, is a
freshman at Mount de Sales this year. Their
son, Valentine, will graduate from Calvert
Hall in the spring.

Brooks Emrey MacWhorter on August 14,
2011. Brooks weighed 9 pounds, 15 ounces.
Jamie Gutcher '01 and Sean McMullen, were
married on October 30, 2010. The ceremony
was held at Mount Saint Mary's University
chapel in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where
they both attended college. The couple
joyfully welcomed their baby girl, Gracyn
Sophia, on August 30, 2011, weighing
7 pounds, 2 ounces.
Samantha Snader '03 was married to Ryan
Gladhill on September 18, 2011. Their
wedding took place at Linganore Winery in
Mt. Airy, MD. Jessica Snader Corbi '93, sister
of Samantha, was the Matron of Honor.

include attending Mass at
school and being able to receive
communion with classmates;
the Baccalaureate Mass, which I
remember attending for my sister
when I was in 5 th grade; wearing

I will be out in public and an
alumna will see my ring and stop
to introduce herself and chat. The

an example of the Mount de Sales
experience. All students might not

MDSA is obviously a campus rich in history and tradition. What do you
consider to be the most significant, tangible piece of history at Mount
de Sales Academy?
The entire building is so rich in history. Many alumnae talk about the
Music Hall graduation and walking through the windows. Everyone
mentions the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales, which is the oldest Catholic
house of worship in Baltimore County.
Then I think of individual pieces housed in our archives. There is a
primitive host maker, found in the coal bin, I’ve only seen in the Museum
of Old Bohemia. I think of the calligraphy work done by the Sisters on
the holy topics.
Certainly the stained glass in the chapel is most notable, especially the
Sacred Heart circlet window above the high altar.
Then there are very ordinary things, for example, the brick floor on the
lower level in what used to be the tack room. It is said that there were
put in place by the original 12 nuns from Georgetown.
How does the history of MDSA contribute to the experience of our
current students?
Since Mount de Sales was one of the first ten Catholic schools for
women in the nation, it has an incomparable tradition of providing
young women with the learning and skills needed for their particular day
and age.
There is a rootedness provided by a Mount de Sales education, which is
extremely valuable in a time of radical change in society.
What is the most important lesson that we can learn from MDSA’s
history over the past 160 and how can we implement that lesson over
the next 160 years?
Mount de Sales has survived innumerable challenges and, yes, even
crises over 160 years. Somehow this "Academy of every virtue" would
survive to provide a Godly education for young women.
I can’t tell you how many women have told me that the happiest days of
their lives were spent at Mount de Sales. It goes without saying that we
need to dedicate ourselves to the preservation of this heritage of faith
and learning.
If you were asked to describe the significance of Mount de Sales
Academy’s history to someone completely unfamiliar with the school,
what would you say?
For many years, Mount de Sales was something of an unknown treasure
here in Catonsville. The cloistered nuns were not given to publicizing
their work. Since the Dominican Renaissance, however, there has been
no lack of buzz about the Academy on the Hill.
Even in the 19 th century Mount de Sales Academy was described
by historian J. Thomas Scharf as the most outstanding girls school in
North America. Its alumnae have included wives, mothers, physicians,
social workers, and academics. Much of their work has been done
without fanfare, reflecting the emblematic Salasian Virtues of sweetness,
wisdom, and discretion.

Recently, three letters written by
Katherine and Elizabeth (Lizzie)
Hamilton were brought to my
attention as Campus Archivist.
Katherine and Lizzie were
among the 21 students enrolled
at Mount de Sales Academy in
1852-53, its first school year. All
three letters are written to their
father, John Hamilton, a wellto-do
landowner and attorney
near Port Tobacco in Charles
County, Maryland.
Dr. James Zalucki P'12 '15, was
given copies of these letters by
a friend and donated them to
the Mount de Sales Archives
to add to our knowledge of
the early years of the school.
We are grateful for the generosity of
Dr. Zalucki and other donors to the archives, for there is little
surviving information about most MDSA students in the
1800’s!
For example, we don’t know if either Katherine or Elizabeth
graduated from our school. We do know that Katherine was
accepted into Sodality in 1854 because the Sodality records date
back to 1853. Katherine was born in 1841 and Elizabeth in 1843,
so if they did graduate, it would have been at about the time
that the Civil War began in 1861. This event seriously affected
school enrollment since most students came from the southern
states and U.S. troops occupied Maryland.
The letters provide a boarder’s view of life at Mount de Sales,
when the students lived in dormitories on the third and fourth
floors of what is now the A-side of the main building. School ran
from early September until the following late June or early July,
when the girls could return home for a two-month vacation.
The last day of the school year was called Distribution Day
because students got a variety of awards for good attendance,
for good deportment, and for the quality of their academic
work. In her June letter, Lizzie reminded her father that, “…
our distribution will take place on the eighth of July, 4 o’ clock in the
afternoon, but you and darling Momma must come in time to get a
good seat, and also to see us…”
After the Distribution Day activities, the parents would take
their children home with them. In the same letter, Lizzie
wrote, “I hope my darling Pa does not expect a long letter this time,
as it is so very near the holidays…indeed, I am almost crazy to see
you for I have not been home in so long a time…”

For the boarders, the Visitation Sisters hired
local doctors and dentists to care for the girls’
needs, and Katherine wrote on February 5,
1855, “…we were unexpectedly visited by the
dentist. I have suffered so much pain from the
toothache, that I summoned up all the courage
possible and had two of my back teeth extracted
without murmuring. Do you not admire the heroic
courage of your daughter?” There was a lot of
snow on the ground that February, for she
related that “…the next day, (after the dentist’s
visit) I was prevented from taking a sleigh-ride
for fear that I would take cold; the girls on their
return gave me a glorious description; no doubt
they enjoyed it much.”
Clearly, there have been many changes in
160 years, but there was one concern that
Kate Hamilton had in common with modern
MDSA students: her grades. She wrote,
“Dear Papa, I am very glad that you think that
there is a decided improvement in my writing,
but my report! I expect that you will shut your
eyes and ask for a glass of water when you read
it. I would very much like to see it; when you
write again, please send it to me and let me see
how I will like it.”
It has been hard to find out more information
about these two women. A search of the
Internet revealed that both had inherited
Prospect Hill, the
family estate in 1884 right after their father
had died. A Charles County genealogist
reported that the 1910 federal census showed
both Katherine and Elizabeth living at
Prospect Hill. Neither woman had married.
Katherine died in 1916 and was buried at the
St. Ignatius Chapel in Port Tobacco. A year
earlier, Elizabeth had died and was buried in
a family graveyard.
Nevertheless, these letters reveal much
about what concerned students nearly 160
years ago. Since they saw their parents
so seldom and letters took a long time to
deliver, students were always curious about
the things happening at home and longed for
the day when they could actually go to their
families. Staying in touch was easier if your
family lived in Maryland. In her October
15 letter, Lizzie was particularly excited for
her father's upcoming visit and asks, “I hope,
dear Papa, when you come up to see us on the last
of this month, that you will please take us out
to Baltimore.” A change of scenery was as
appealing to girls then as it is now. Whatever
Katherine’s grades might have been, her
cursive handwriting was excellent and so
was her spelling and grammar, especially
when we realize that the girls were only 12
to 14 years old when they wrote these letters!
I’m ending this article with an appeal to
our MDSA families to share historical
letters with the Archives. (They don’t
have to date back to the mid-1800’s!!)

information in them to fill in some
of the blanks in the history of Mount

The most significant piece of
history at MDSA is the Chapel. It’s
beautifully described as the heart
and soul of the school and it always
has been.
Students walk through it every day
and it is a constant reminder of the
presence of God in our lives and
His continual presence at Mount de
Sales.
How does the history of MDSA
contribute to the experience of our
current students?
It adds to our perspective by
showing us what things are really
