Dear Friends,<br />

In this annual report we are pleased to highlight a wi<strong>de</strong>-ranging conversation<br />

between members of our Board of Trustees and current stu<strong>de</strong>nt lea<strong>de</strong>rs at<br />

<strong>Mount</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Sales</strong>, <strong>the</strong> fruit of a breakfast meeting <strong>the</strong> stu<strong>de</strong>nts hosted for <strong>the</strong><br />

board earlier this spring. As <strong>the</strong> Board and <strong>the</strong> administration move forward<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r in updating our strategic plan, <strong>the</strong> Board recognizes how important<br />

it is to be in touch with <strong>the</strong> experiences and concerns of our stu<strong>de</strong>nts and<br />

teachers. The hard work of <strong>the</strong> Board of Trustees, as well as <strong>the</strong> tireless<br />

<strong>de</strong>dication of our talented faculty and staff, is yielding great results. This past year has been<br />

a full one, packed with many improvements and activities. Here is just a sampling <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

2011-2012 school year that <strong>de</strong>monstrates how we achieve our goal of aca<strong>de</strong>mic excellence in <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholic tradition. As you read below, keep in mind that we are successful in large part because<br />

of <strong>the</strong> generous donors who are recognized in our Honor Roll of Donors.<br />

ACADEMICS<br />

• New Sacred Heart Program for learning differences<br />

introduced for 2012-13<br />

• SAT and AP scores rank among <strong>the</strong> highest of 19<br />

area Catholic schools<br />

• On <strong>the</strong> National Latin Exam, 4 stu<strong>de</strong>nts scored in<br />

<strong>the</strong> top 1% (Perfect) and 32 stu<strong>de</strong>nts scored in <strong>the</strong> top<br />

13 % (Gold Medal Awards)<br />

• Catholic Social Teaching’s class gains national<br />

coverage for <strong>the</strong>ir initiative responding to <strong>the</strong> HHS<br />

mandate and Helen Alvare’s “Open Letter to<br />

Women” campaign<br />

• Visits <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maryland BioLab and Nifty Fifty<br />

Science and Engineering speakers; freshmen attend<br />

USA Science and Engineering Festival in D.C.<br />

• 14 stu<strong>de</strong>nts score in <strong>the</strong> national top 20% of <strong>the</strong><br />

National Financial Capability Challenge<br />

• AP Art History; Great Explorations, an<br />

interdisciplinary course in science, math, and<br />

technology; Honors Advanced Drama; Arete Honors<br />

Great Books Seminar; Geography and Global Issues<br />

all introduced for 2012-2013 school year<br />

• Concert Choir received highest overall rating in<br />
