Who is on the field team? The Board of Trustees and sub-committees for Facilities and
Development are directing Phase II as they did with the very successful Phase I. Sanders Design
and Century Engineering, both of whom were involved in The Constance and Samuel Pistorio
Sports Complex and new convent, are captains of the athletic field team. Ripken Design has also
consulted on the field.

Why is Phase II important as Mount
de Sales Academy looks out to the
next 160 years?
Phase II demonstrates the
Board’s on-going commitment to
the development of the school
through the allocation of all types
of resources. This unrelenting
commitment will ensure Mount
de Sales Academy’s continued
improvement and growth for the
benefit of our current and future

How will Phase II affect our current
and future students?
The field is further fulfillment of
the school’s mission and all will
benefit from an enhanced sense
of community in an improved
environment. The field will be a
better place for student athletes
to play, resulting in an overall
elevation of the Athletic Program. It
also supports academics, through
Physical Education classes and
special activities.
How and why do you encourage
the school’s friends and families to
become involved with Phase II?
The Trustees whole-heartedly
believe in the mission of Mount de
Sales Academy. In support of this,
we work to engage others to join
us in our work for the benefit of the
students.
What do you see as the most
significant change that the
completion of Phase II will bring to
Mount de Sales Academy?
Phase II will expand the capabilities
and opportunities for the entire
student body, while enhancing our
already vibrant school spirit.

PHASE II: The Xs and Os with Sister Philip Joseph, O.P.
Why an artificial turf field? Everything we do is directly related
to our mission, one aspect of which is nurturing the "whole
person." Physical fitness, team competition, and school spirit are
all encompassed in our responsibility to our students. Beyond the
60% of our students who participate in at least one sport, each and
every Sailor will be positively impacted by the athletic field. Physical
Education, a requirement for all students, will utilize the field for
classes. The field will also be used for Spirit Day, Fall Festival, and
other student activities. The field will create a multi-season, safe,
recreation space for all students.
The current athletic field, which was constructed in 1981, has always
had drainage and other topography issues. The field is especially bad
in the spring. Due to poor conditions, the 2011 lacrosse team, who was
once again unable to tryout on the field, hosted only two home games.
Field Hockey was also impacted by divots and ruts throughout the
field that, at best, made play difficult and, at worst, created safety
hazards.
As well as serving as the competition home for the lacrosse and
field hockey teams, soccer and softball will be “home” for the first
time in their histories. Additionally, the field is being designed with
maximum utilization in mind so that as many teams as possible will
benefit from the field. These teams include, but are not limited to:
winter indoor track, outdoor track, and cheerleading.
What is the game plan? Phase II, the artificial turf field with seating
and spectator amenities, including plazas and restrooms, is a $1.5
million project. This achievable goal is ambitious when you consider
that Phase I, which raised $5 million for the convent, HVAC, and
security, was completed on June 30, 2011. Many of the generous donors
who supported Phase I are fulfilling their pledges with multi-year gifts.
Therefore, we need those who did not give to Phase I, as well as Phase
I donors who are able to do so, to participate in Phase II.
Alumnae, current and past parents, and other friends of Mount de
Sales Academy, we need you! Please consider how you can join the
team. This project offers recognition opportunities such as field and
plaza naming, and “buying seats”*.

When will the first whistle sound? A lot of construction noise will be heard before fans cheer
on the Sailors from the hillside seating. The goal is to begin construction at the end of the lacrosse
season and have the field usable in time for the 2012-2013 school year and the fall soccer and field
hockey seasons.

Class Giving

The Class of 2005, former
Sailors who are now in their
mid-twenties, see Phase II as
an opportunity to reunite. At a place already full of history, Mount de
Sales is yet again writing another great chapter for Sailors.
Jennifer (Jenny) Hackett '05 has always been a leader of the class. She
is now taking charge to make sure the Class of 2005 gives back to our
beloved Mount de Sales.
Phase II includes built-in hillside stadium seating and individual seats
that may be named for a $1,000 donation, a goal easily attainable for the
113 young women of '05.
Jenny wrote to her classmates, “The natural allure of Mount de Sales
comes from not only the history of the school, but also the family,
the Dominican Sisters, alumnae, students, faculty, staff, and parents.
Named recognition is a rare honor on our campus, and a class as
legendary as ours should take advantage of it!”
The Class of 2005 responded positively to the goal that was set and
is well on their way to achieving it. Melissa Darmody ’05 says, “It
means so much more to give back to Mount de Sales when I know the
classmates I love are doing so as well."
The Class of 2005 is not alone in this quest. The Classes of 2004 and
2006 both have stepped up and are in the process of organizing their
own class gifts to Phase II.
In Jenny’s letter she notes, “It is up to us to support our school and
ensure that women who follow us have some of the same wonderful

Why is Phase II important as Mount
de Sales Academy looks out to the
next 160 years?
It ensures the continuation of
competitive sports teams at Mount
de Sales. We, as MDSA athletes,
can be ambassadors of Christ to
the teams we play by showing good
sportsmanship and fair but tough
competition. Phase II also helps with
our sense of community.

that we will be able to play on the
field all year long. Last lacrosse
season we rarely got to play on the
field, which was a disadvantage
to our team. Also, the new field
