to maximize the use of data in crime prevention and detection.
6.26 PRISON REFORM
A detailed assessment of Prison operations was recently conducted
by a team from the State Department of the United States of America.
The team was highly impressed at the creative initiatives employed
in the rehabilitation process and the self sufficiency of the Institution.
The key aspects in the rehabilitation strategy, education, counseling
and work programmes have impacted positively on many inmates.
The Prison is endeavouring to expand all its rehabilitation programmes
in 2012, in particular the Prison Industry. In 2011, the Furniture Shop,
which was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, was re-opened. In addition,
a block-making programme was introduced.
This year, a Big Brother Support System will be implemented aimed
at providing support to distressed inmates. As part of this thrust
of rehabilitation, the Prison will strengthen its participation with
churches and religious organizations.
6.27 DISASTER MITIGATION AND MANAGEMENT
National Disaster Management remains a priority in 2012. A review
of the National Disaster Management Plan, in collaboration with
CDEMA, was completed in 2011.
Plans are in place to conduct a National Simulation exercise in April,
to assess the effectiveness of the Plan and the response capacity at the
national level.
The Agency will continue to forge ahead in its efforts to enhance the
coordination and cooperation amongst its stakeholders, strengthen its
institutional capacity and ensure the Nation reduces its risk to the
impact of hazards and natural disasters.
