Annual Leibman Forum Features
Author on Business and Art
The 11th annual Jordan H. and Joan R. Leibman
Forum on the Legal and Business Environment
of Art took place on Wednesday, November
5, 2014, at the Herron School of Art
and Design on the IUPUI campus. The featured
speaker was Daniel Grant, author of The
Business of Being an Artist. His talk focused
on how artists can communicate—in person,
in writing, and online—with collectors, dealers,
and curators, to promote sales and to lead
to exhibitions.
Grant, whose frequent reporting on the visual
arts appears in ARTnews Magazine, the
Huffington Post, and The Wall Street Journal,
among others, spoke to a crowd of students,
faculty and alumni of Indiana University’s Herron
School of Art and Design, Kelley School of
Business, and McKinney School of Law.
Grant quoted studies that have shown a
high percentage of artists are able to support
themselves through their art and related
skills—an idea that flies in the face of preconceived notions
about an arts education.
Grant has written two other books, Selling Art Without Galleries,
and The Fine Artist’s Career Guide.
The Leibman Forum was established at IUPUI in 2004
through the generous contribution of Leah Hartman, ‘85, an
alumna of both the McKinney School of Law and the Kelley
School of Business. Hartman wished to honor her former professor
and mentor, Jordan H. Leibman, ‘79. The forum examines
issues related to the legal and business environment of the
arts and is a joint project of the IU Herron School of Art and
Design, the IU Kelley School of Business, and the IU Robert H.
McKinney School of Law. ❖
