HALL CENTER FOR LAW AND HEALTH
Health Industry
Networking Fair
at IU McKinney
The Health Law Society (HLS) held
its inaugural Health Industry Networking
Fair in the Inlow Hall atrium
on February 3. Health industry attorneys,
along with professionals who
have earned a law degree but do not
practice law, took part in an information
fair to acquaint students with the
wide variety of career paths available
to them within the health sector. ❖
(above) The HLS organized and hosted the inaugural event. From left are Julian Senior, HLS Student Bar Association
representative; Amina Thomas, HLS secretary; Patricia Connelly, HLS vice president; Professor Nicolas Terry; Amy
Elson, assistant director of the Hall Center for Law and Health; Alessa Quinones-Ortiz, HLS president; Brittany Sutton,
HLS social events chair; Maggie Little, HLS social media chair; and Tim Schuster, HLS treasurer.
(far left) One of the attendees of the
networking fair was Elizabeth Walker, ‘99, director
for strategic resources for Quorum Health
Resources. She was a dual-degree student, also
earning a Masters of Health Administration. To her
right is Alessa Quinones, a rising 3L who also is
pursuing the JD/MHA. To Quinones’ right is Jamie
Kida, a rising 2L student.
(near left) Networking in action: On the left
is James Banister, ‘14, who received a graduate
certificate in health law and is now an associate
with Ice Miller. On the right is James Burns, ‘75,
who spent 28 years at Eli Lilly and Company and is
now senior counsel at Ice Miller.
Health Law Grand Rounds:
Spotlight on the Affordable Care Act
Events at the law school often deal with timely subject matter. A recent example of
this was the Hall Center for Law and Health Grand Rounds discussion on March
3 at Inlow Hall. Professor David Orentlicher, co-director of the Hall Center for Law
and Health, left, and Indiana Solicitor General Thomas Fisher, right, explored the
topic “Tax Credits and the Affordable Care Act: A Discussion of King v. Burwell
and Indiana v. IRS.” The United States Supreme Court heard arguments in King v.
Burwell on March 4, and ultimately ruled that the subsidies provided as tax credits
for health insurance purchased through exchanges are constitutional. ❖
