Professor Susan M. Wolf Presents<br />

McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham<br />

Award Lecture at IU McKinney<br />

Professor Susan M. Wolf, McKnight Presidential<br />

Professor of Law, Medicine and Public<br />

Policy; Faegre Baker Daniels Professor of Law;<br />

and Professor of Medicine at the University of<br />

Minnesota, was the 2015 recipient of the Mc-<br />

Donald-Merrill-Ketcham Award. She presented<br />

the annual lecture associated with the award<br />

on February 20 at IU McKinney, on the topic<br />

“The Challenge of Creating Rules for Translational<br />

Science: Return of Results and Incidental<br />

Findings in Genomics.”<br />

At the University of Minnesota, Professor<br />

Wolf is the founding chair of the Consortium on<br />

Law and Values in Health, Environment and the<br />

Life Sciences and founding director of the Joint<br />

Degree Program in Law, Science and Technology.<br />

She is also a professor of medicine and a<br />

faculty member in the Center for Bioethics.<br />

“Professor Wolf is not only one of the foremost legal scholars of our<br />

time but also a true pioneer in cutting edge cross-disciplinary research,”<br />

said Professor Nicolas P. Terry, executive director of the Hall Center for<br />

Law and Health at IU McKinney.<br />

Professor Wolf is an elected member of the National Academy of<br />

Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, an elected fellow of the American<br />

Association for the Advancement of Science, an elected member of<br />

the American Law Institute, and an elected fellow of The Hastings<br />

Center as well as a past-member of the Fellows’ Council. She has received<br />

numerous grants to support her research, including from the<br />

National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and The<br />

Greenwall Foundation. From 2007-2010, Wolf served as a member<br />

of the Law & Neuroscience Project funded by the MacArthur Foundation.<br />

She has recently served as a senior consultant to The Hastings<br />

Center on its project on guidelines for end-of-life care, funded<br />

by the Donaghue Foundation and Sussman Trust. She received a<br />

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health<br />

Policy Research to fund research in 2012-14.<br />

Professor Wolf teaches in the areas of health law, law and science,<br />

and bioethics. She was co-holder of the Julius E. Davis Chair in Law,<br />

an Opperman Research Scholar, a recipient of the John K. & Elsie<br />

Lampert Fesler Research Grant, and a recipient of a University of<br />

Minnesota Medical School Merit Award.<br />

The award lecture was followed by a panel discussion which included<br />

John T. Callaghan, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Dean of VA Research,<br />

Associate Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Toxicology,<br />

IU School of Medicine; Kimberly Quaid, Ph.D., Professor, IU<br />

School of Medicine and Faculty Investigator, IU Center for Bioethics;<br />

and Titus Schleyer, D.M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine, Clem Mc-<br />

Donald Professor of Biomedical Informatics, IU School of Medicine.<br />

The annual McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Memorial Lectureship<br />

and Award for Excellence in Law and Medicine is supported by a<br />

bequest to the IU McKinney School of Law and the Indiana University<br />

School of Medicine. This lecture and award brings leading<br />

scholars and policy makers in the fields of law and medicine to the<br />

Indianapolis campus for the benefit of students, faculty, the bar and<br />

the medical community. ❖<br />
