CULTURE IN<br />
SUSTAINABLE<br />
DEVELOPMENT<br />

complexity<br />
Few th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> human life are more<br />
powerful than ide<strong>as</strong> <strong>and</strong> concepts,<br />
<strong>and</strong> culture is one of the most<br />
<strong>in</strong>fluential <strong>in</strong> all walks of life.<br />
(Graham Fairclough)<br />
Both culture <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development<br />
are broad concepts, cover<strong>in</strong>g different<br />
spheres of life from p<strong>as</strong>t to future. Try<strong>in</strong>g<br />

complementary or <strong>in</strong> conflict?<br />
And where do social <strong>and</strong> cultural susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />

<strong>Culture</strong><br />
As Raymond Williams now-famously said,<br />
‘culture’ is one of the two or three most complicated<br />
words <strong>in</strong> English usage [1]. There<br />
have been, <strong>and</strong> will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be, many attempts<br />
to list all the th<strong>in</strong>gs the word embraces.<br />
