The end of an Action, the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of action<br />
We are confident that new research along<br />
such l<strong>in</strong>es will advance this emerg<strong>in</strong>g field<br />
of study, <strong>and</strong> enable culture to play a more<br />
substantial <strong>and</strong> future-proofed role <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability. The Action h<strong>as</strong> been able<br />
to establish a new book series – ‘Routledge<br />
Studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>Culture</strong> <strong>and</strong> Susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>Development</strong>’<br />
– <strong>as</strong> a specific outcome of its work.<br />
This will provide a vehicle <strong>for</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
of the results of future research <strong>and</strong> will help<br />
to build cohesion with<strong>in</strong> the whole field. The<br />
first three books <strong>in</strong> the series (see pages<br />
48–49) have been drawn primarily from the<br />
work of the Action <strong>and</strong> its participants. We<br />
have also already established a pilot on-l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
MA <strong>in</strong> this subject, which we hope will <strong>in</strong>spire<br />
others to follow us.<br />
We are also aware that many European <strong>and</strong><br />
global fund<strong>in</strong>g streams, <strong>for</strong> example with<strong>in</strong><br />
the ERA <strong>and</strong> notably Horizon 2020, are becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
available <strong>for</strong> research that addresses<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability issues. It would be a lost<br />
opportunity if major research programmes<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue to focus <strong>as</strong> exclusively <strong>as</strong> they have<br />
<strong>in</strong> the p<strong>as</strong>t on narrowly-def<strong>in</strong>ed views of environment<br />
or ecology, or on views of the economy<br />
that separates it from its societal roots.<br />
From our vantage po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>as</strong> returnees from No<br />
Man’s L<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> supported by our extensive<br />
webs of cross- <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ter-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary collaborations,<br />
we can see the necessity <strong>and</strong> the<br />
advantages of culture ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a more central<br />
<strong>and</strong> trans<strong>for</strong>mative role <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development<br />
discourse <strong>and</strong> action. We envisage<br />
that the <strong>in</strong>sights of this COST Action will be<br />
able to ensure a strong ‘cultural stream’ <strong>in</strong><br />
future research <strong>and</strong> policy.<br />
INTERNATIONAL PILOT ONLINE COURSE ON ‘CULTURAL<br />
SUSTAINABILITY’ LAUNCHED<br />
In April 2014, a pilot <strong>for</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ternational onl<strong>in</strong>e course on ‘Cultural Susta<strong>in</strong>ability’ w<strong>as</strong> carried out. The<br />
course exam<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>in</strong>terrelated dimensions of susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>and</strong> the concept of development. It<br />
brought together lecturers <strong>and</strong> students from various backgrounds <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary discussions about<br />
how culture, power <strong>and</strong> ecology <strong>in</strong>teract <strong>in</strong> human-environment relations. The course critically <strong>in</strong>vestigated<br />
the challenges of achiev<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>ability at local, regional <strong>and</strong> global scales, <strong>and</strong> the role of cultural<br />
policy. It highlighted both philosophical <strong>and</strong> conceptual issues surround<strong>in</strong>g the relationship of cultural<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>and</strong> cultural policy, <strong>and</strong> engaged students <strong>in</strong> practical c<strong>as</strong>e studies, such <strong>as</strong> those <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
<strong>in</strong> with urban plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> rural development.<br />
The course – MCPS125 ‘Cultural Susta<strong>in</strong>ability’ – is now established at the University of Jyväskylä (F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>)<br />
<strong>as</strong> part of the MA <strong>in</strong> Cultural Policy. It is unique <strong>in</strong>ternationally <strong>and</strong> addresses a need to consolidate current<br />
ide<strong>as</strong> on this ris<strong>in</strong>g topic with<strong>in</strong> academic tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes. Moreover it equips young scholars to<br />
question <strong>and</strong> address policy development issues <strong>in</strong> this area. More <strong>in</strong>fo can be found here :<br />
