‘<strong>in</strong>digenised’ people with a different cultural<br />

connection to the l<strong>and</strong>. Consequently, divergent<br />

cultural mean<strong>in</strong>gs generated conflicts with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

Atacama Desert community, notably when manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> decid<strong>in</strong>g collectively over the newly<br />

returned l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> water rights, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Flamencos<br />

Nature Reserve. Furthermore, grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

water scarcity caused by the expansionist needs<br />

of m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g companies operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a neoliberal<br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g add to the contemporary climate of tension<br />

<strong>and</strong> race <strong>for</strong> natural resources <strong>and</strong> water <strong>in</strong><br />

the Atacama Desert.<br />

same cultural values cannot be made. The nature-culture<br />

nexus is a result of complex <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uously<br />

chang<strong>in</strong>g cultural, social <strong>and</strong> political<br />

Policies which seek to protect culture <strong>and</strong> nature<br />

(<strong>in</strong> this example, those which grant democratic<br />

property rights to <strong>in</strong>digenous people) will also<br />

The key lesson to be learned is that culture is<br />

constantly chang<strong>in</strong>g, that it evolves rapidly, <strong>and</strong><br />

that it cannot be regarded <strong>as</strong> an <strong>in</strong>herent genetic<br />

trait. Many countries around the world have<br />

<strong>in</strong>digenous populations <strong>and</strong>, while their culture<br />

often provides a framework <strong>for</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the<br />
