<strong>in</strong>terface of the material <strong>and</strong> the cognitive or<br />

perceptual worlds, <strong>in</strong> the transition from p<strong>as</strong>t<br />

to future, <strong>in</strong> the symbiosis of global with local<br />

<strong>and</strong> of people <strong>and</strong> place, the <strong>in</strong>terdependence<br />

of production <strong>and</strong> consumption (<strong>and</strong> the impacts<br />

of both), to mention but a few examples.<br />

We propose a loose-knit yet <strong>in</strong>terwoven set of<br />

future research pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. They constitute a<br />

strategic framework <strong>for</strong> the next stages, perhaps<br />

over the next decade or so, of research<br />

<strong>in</strong>to underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g on the central<br />

place that culture holds <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability discourse.<br />

In summary, research should:<br />

• achieve true <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>arity, beyond <strong>and</strong><br />

between the doma<strong>in</strong>s (social sciences <strong>and</strong><br />

humanities, natural sciences, technological<br />

sciences, etc)<br />

• reach out towards transdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

research <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g other stakeholders<br />

• envision the co-creation <strong>and</strong> co-production<br />

of knowledge, <strong>for</strong> example by <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

local knowledge <strong>in</strong> research, <strong>and</strong> by espous<strong>in</strong>g<br />

participative <strong>and</strong> transdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

practices<br />

• stretch beyond Europe <strong>and</strong> develop <strong>in</strong>tercont<strong>in</strong>ental<br />

collaborative practices, also<br />

between global South(s) <strong>and</strong> North(s)<br />

• <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>and</strong> valorise quantitative <strong>and</strong><br />

qualitative data <strong>and</strong> methodologies equally<br />

• exp<strong>and</strong> ecological research from climate<br />

change <strong>and</strong> biodiversity to wider variety of<br />

issues, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g socio-cultural po<strong>in</strong>ts of<br />

view<br />

• contribute towards practical applications<br />

<strong>and</strong> the re-<strong>for</strong>mulation of policy at all levels,<br />

<strong>in</strong> other words seek to be trans<strong>for</strong>mative<br />

<strong>in</strong> the ways that citizens, actors <strong>and</strong><br />

governments see <strong>and</strong> shape the future<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g these general research pr<strong>in</strong>ciples,<br />

we suggest a number of more-or-less specific<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual research l<strong>in</strong>es. We have grouped<br />

them <strong>in</strong> four clusters, broadly speak<strong>in</strong>g, relat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to concepts, methods, evidence <strong>and</strong><br />

themes, but nonetheless we of course <strong>in</strong>sist<br />

on their overarch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terconnectedness.<br />

• Ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> operationalisation<br />

of conceptual approaches<br />

> Further clarification <strong>and</strong> specification of<br />

the <strong>in</strong>terface, <strong>in</strong>terrelationship <strong>and</strong> overlap<br />

between culture <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development<br />

> Investigation <strong>in</strong>to how the three roles of<br />

culture work <strong>in</strong> practice: what are the political,<br />

philosophical <strong>and</strong> practical prerequisites?<br />

> Exploration of ‘cultural susta<strong>in</strong>ability’ <strong>in</strong><br />

relation to other unify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g<br />

frameworks <strong>and</strong> new evolv<strong>in</strong>g frameworks<br />

• Develop<strong>in</strong>g methodologies<br />

<strong>and</strong> practices, such <strong>as</strong><br />

> Def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>and</strong> selection of <strong>in</strong>dicators or<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es to analyse <strong>and</strong> manage regional<br />

development through unify<strong>in</strong>g culturally-related<br />

filters such <strong>as</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape, ecosystem<br />

services or territory<br />

> Further development of the practice of<br />

place-b<strong>as</strong>ed <strong>as</strong>sessments that use culture<br />

to create new opportunities, wealth,<br />

quality of life <strong>and</strong> progressive development<br />

> Revival <strong>and</strong> modernised use of the concept<br />

of commons, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g consideration<br />

of public/private conflicts, the <strong>for</strong>mation/<br />

trans<strong>for</strong>mation of common (social) memory<br />

<strong>and</strong> cultural <strong>and</strong> counter mapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

> <strong>Development</strong> of methods <strong>for</strong> mobilis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> motivat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> communities<br />

<strong>in</strong> activism <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> study<strong>in</strong>g processes of catalysation<br />

(who leads, whose agend<strong>as</strong>)<br />

> Devis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g new methods <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g eco-environmental<br />

action <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ject<strong>in</strong>g it with greater culturally-sensitive<br />

<strong>and</strong> culturally-<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med<br />

awareness<br />

> Design<strong>in</strong>g ways to use <strong>and</strong> benefit from<br />

cultural activity <strong>and</strong> creativity <strong>in</strong> spatial<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g
