…(s)usta<strong>in</strong>ability is cultural by be<strong>in</strong>g contextual, historically<br />

<strong>and</strong> geographically concrete; everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

human be<strong>in</strong>gs do is woven <strong>in</strong>to culture <strong>in</strong> terms of<br />

webs of mean<strong>in</strong>g created by human be<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>Culture</strong><br />

appears <strong>and</strong> is underst<strong>and</strong>able through narrative<br />

organisation, <strong>and</strong> cultural susta<strong>in</strong>ability can emerge<br />

<strong>as</strong> a social process created through narratives that<br />

connect the p<strong>as</strong>t with the future, <strong>and</strong> the local with<br />

the global. [15: 165]<br />

<strong>Culture</strong> processes <strong>and</strong> translates <strong>in</strong>to a common<br />

language the ecologically-, environmentally-<br />

<strong>and</strong> socially-founded reactions to proposed<br />

development or imm<strong>in</strong>ent avoidable<br />

change. Generally speak<strong>in</strong>g however some<br />

sort of lens or filter is required to underst<strong>and</strong><br />

how culture mediates the relation between<br />

society <strong>and</strong> environment. One might be the<br />

concept of l<strong>and</strong>scape , <strong>for</strong> example, another<br />

might be the context of territorialisation,<br />

a third could be ecosystems services, <strong>and</strong><br />

creativity might be fourth example. All require<br />

a cultural context <strong>and</strong> an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

welcom<strong>in</strong>g of diversity of cultural expressions,<br />

<strong>and</strong> most importantly some level of<br />

co-production rooted <strong>in</strong> human <strong>in</strong>tentionality<br />

expressed <strong>in</strong> practices, i.e. culture. The fact<br />

that the potential of culture’s mediat<strong>in</strong>g role<br />

h<strong>as</strong> rarely been exploited perhaps expla<strong>in</strong>s<br />

why susta<strong>in</strong>able development h<strong>as</strong> proved to<br />

be so elusive.<br />

CREATING SUSTAINABILITY – THE<br />

TRANSFORMATIVE ROLE OF CULTURE<br />

AS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT<br />

Third role – creat<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>ability. Here culture<br />

takes on its evolutionary, holistic <strong>and</strong><br />

trans<strong>for</strong>mative role, provid<strong>in</strong>g a new paradigm<br />

to the question of susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />

<strong>Culture</strong> can be viewed at a more profound<br />

level of society <strong>as</strong> a core issue <strong>for</strong> a transition<br />

towards susta<strong>in</strong>able development. We<br />

can <strong>for</strong> example <strong>in</strong>sist on a co-th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of environmental,<br />

social <strong>and</strong> cultural susta<strong>in</strong>ability,<br />

<strong>and</strong> an <strong>in</strong>sistence on how social life is embedded<br />

<strong>in</strong> particular places <strong>and</strong> situations. A<br />

truly evolutionary culture, or an eco-cultural<br />

civilisation, <strong>in</strong>volves practic<strong>in</strong>g a new underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

of the human place <strong>in</strong> the world, <strong>and</strong><br />

recognis<strong>in</strong>g that humans are an <strong>in</strong>separable<br />

part of the more-than-human world. Crucially,<br />

this means that every human action is always<br />

relative to <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenced by the situation at<br />

h<strong>and</strong>. It allows new values, new ways of life,<br />

<strong>and</strong> (perhaps) utopian visions of a susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

society.<br />
