c. INSPECTION I<br />

1. Inspect buffer assembly (1, 2. 3, or 3 1) for cracks or<br />

damage<br />

RIFLE ONLY<br />

a. Some old buffers (1) have a hole with pin installed<br />

which protrudes equally on each side approximately<br />

1/32 inch (O 08 cm)<br />

b. Some buffers (2) have a hole In the housing but no<br />

pin<br />

c. New buffers (3) do not have a hole In buffer body or a<br />

pin.<br />

BOTH WEAPONS<br />

2. If cracked or damaged, replace.<br />

3. Check free length of action spring (4). The free length<br />

FOR RIFLE ONLY must be between 11 3/4 inches<br />

(29.85 cm) mini- mum and 13 1/2 inches (34 29 cm)<br />

maximum, FOR CARBINE ONLY must be between<br />

10 1’/16 inches (25,56 cm) minimum and 11 114<br />

Inches (28.58 cm) maximum, If not, replace Do not<br />

attempt to adjust the length by stretching the action<br />

spring<br />

4. Inspect lower receiver (5) (without further<br />

disassembly) for legibility of serial number ARMY<br />

ONLY: If the serial number is hard to read, evacuate<br />

to direct support maintenance AIR FORCE ONLY: If<br />

the serial number is hard to read, evacuate to depot<br />

maintenance<br />
