5. Attacks on Web servers and Security<br />

Introduction to Web Servers<br />

A Web Server is a program which is configured to serve Web Pages using the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP).<br />

• Served content usually is HTML documents and linked objects Images, Scripts, Text, etc.<br />

• Web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. For example, if you enter the URL<br />

http://www.hackingtech.co.tv/mobile.html in your browser, this sends a request to the server whose domain name is<br />

hackingtech.co.tv. The server then fetches the page named mobile.html and sends it to your browser.<br />

Setting Up a Web Server<br />

Any computer can be turned into a Web server by installing server software and connecting the machine to the Internet.<br />

There are many Web server software applications available.<br />

• Software to setup a Web Server:<br />

– Apache<br />

– IIS<br />

The Basic Process: How Web servers work<br />

Let's say that you are sitting at your computer, surfing the Web. So you type that URL into your browser and press enter.<br />

• And magically, no matter where in the world that URL lives, the page pops up on your screen.<br />

• Web browser forms a connection to a Web server, requests a page and receives it.<br />
