A total of 1,31517 convicts were<br />
reported under various terms of sentences<br />
in the country at the end of <strong>2014</strong> (The<br />
details may be seen in Table-7.1). As on<br />
31 st December, <strong>2014</strong>, a total of 318<br />
convicts with capital punishment were<br />
lodged in various jails, accounting for<br />
0.24% of the total convicts. Uttar Pradesh<br />
(82) has reported the highest number of<br />
such convicts, accounting for 25.8% of the<br />
convicts given capital punishment in the<br />
country followed by Maharashtra (36),<br />
Madhya Pradesh (33), Bihar (28) and<br />
Karnataka (24). (Table-7.1).<br />
A large number of convicts<br />
(71,632) were undergoing sentence of life<br />
imprisonment in various prisons in the<br />
country, accounting for 54.5% of the total<br />
convicts. In 13 States and 2 UTs, the<br />
share of convicts undergoing life<br />
imprisonment was more than the national<br />
average of 54.5%. These States/UTs were<br />
Daman & Diu (81.3%), Jharkhand<br />
(75.4%), Puducherry (74.7%),<br />
Chhattisgarh (67.9%), Andhra Pradesh<br />
(67.8%), Uttar Pradesh (67.5%),<br />
Karnataka (66.4%), Assam (66.3%),<br />
Telangana (65.7%), Bihar (63.7%),<br />
Gujarat (60.2%), Maharashtra (59.8%),<br />
Madhya Pradesh (58.3%), Tamil Nadu<br />
(58.3%) and Rajasthan (55.1%) (Table<br />
7.2).<br />
A total of 17,644 convicts were<br />
undergoing sentences between 10 years -<br />
13 years, accounting for 13.4% of the<br />
total convicts. The highest percentage of<br />
convicts undergoing sentence of this<br />
period to total convicts was reported from<br />
Goa (40%) followed by Himachal Pradesh<br />
(26.2%), Punjab (23.1%), Chandigarh<br />
(23.1%) and Jammu & Kashmir (20.6%).<br />
A total of 11,668 convicts<br />
accounting for 8.9% of total convicts were<br />
undergoing sentences of 7 years - 9 +<br />
years. The highest percentage of such<br />
convicts was reported from Kerala<br />
(19.0%) followed by Delhi (17.5%),<br />

(15.3%).<br />
6.7% of the convicts (8,805 out of<br />
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences for<br />
the period 5 years - 6 + years. The highest<br />
percentage of such convicts was reported<br />
from A & N Islands (58.1%) followed by<br />
Kerala (24.0%), Meghalaya (17.6%), Goa<br />
(14.5%), Delhi (13.2%) and Sikkim (13.1%).<br />
5.1% of the convicts (6,770 out of<br />
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences for<br />
the period 2 years - 4 + years in various jails<br />
in the country. Arunachal Pradesh has<br />
reported 37.5% of such convicts followed by<br />
A&N Islands (34.3%), Manipur (28.0%),<br />
Kerala (14.5%), Sikkim (12.1%), Tripura<br />
(11.8%) and Punjab (10.6%).<br />
4.1% of the convicts (5,339 out of<br />
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences for<br />
the period 1 year - 2 + years. The highest<br />
percentage of such convicts was reported<br />
from Kerala (16%), Nagaland (11.6%),<br />
Mizoram (10.8%) and West Bengal<br />
(10.1%).<br />
3.1% of the convicts (4,061 out of<br />
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences of six<br />
months to one year. The percentage of<br />
such convicts was relatively high in<br />
Mizoram (14.0%), Manipur and Meghalaya<br />
(11.8% each), West Bengal (11.1%), Goa<br />
(9.0%), Uttarakhand (7.9%) and<br />
Chandigarh (7.1%).<br />
A total of 95 persons were awarded<br />
death penalty during <strong>2014</strong> in the country.<br />
During <strong>2014</strong>, 17 persons were awarded<br />
such punishment in Bihar (17) followed by<br />
Uttar Pradesh (16), Madhya Pradesh (12),<br />
Maharashtra (9), Chhattisgarh (8) and<br />
Gujarat, Jharkhand & Madhya Pradesh (5<br />
each). The death sentence of 112 convicts<br />
was commuted to life imprisonment during<br />
the year <strong>2014</strong>. Out of 112 convicts whose<br />
death sentence was commuted to life<br />
imprisonment, 18.8% were reported from<br />
Bihar (21) followed by Delhi (19), Karnataka<br />
(15), Maharashtra (10) and Haryana & Uttar<br />
Pradesh (9 each). No convict awarded with<br />
capital punishment was executed during the<br />
year <strong>2014</strong>. Details may be seen in (Table-<br />
