PRISON STATISTICS INDIA 2014

A total of 1,31517 convicts were
reported under various terms of sentences
in the country at the end of 2014 (The
details may be seen in Table-7.1). As on
31 st December, 2014, a total of 318
convicts with capital punishment were
lodged in various jails, accounting for
0.24% of the total convicts. Uttar Pradesh
(82) has reported the highest number of
such convicts, accounting for 25.8% of the
convicts given capital punishment in the
country followed by Maharashtra (36),
Madhya Pradesh (33), Bihar (28) and
Karnataka (24). (Table-7.1).
A large number of convicts
(71,632) were undergoing sentence of life
imprisonment in various prisons in the
country, accounting for 54.5% of the total
convicts. In 13 States and 2 UTs, the
share of convicts undergoing life
imprisonment was more than the national
average of 54.5%. These States/UTs were
Daman & Diu (81.3%), Jharkhand
(75.4%), Puducherry (74.7%),
Chhattisgarh (67.9%), Andhra Pradesh
(67.8%), Uttar Pradesh (67.5%),
Karnataka (66.4%), Assam (66.3%),
Telangana (65.7%), Bihar (63.7%),
Gujarat (60.2%), Maharashtra (59.8%),
Madhya Pradesh (58.3%), Tamil Nadu
(58.3%) and Rajasthan (55.1%) (Table
7.2).
A total of 17,644 convicts were
undergoing sentences between 10 years -
13 years, accounting for 13.4% of the
total convicts. The highest percentage of
convicts undergoing sentence of this
period to total convicts was reported from
Goa (40%) followed by Himachal Pradesh
(26.2%), Punjab (23.1%), Chandigarh
(23.1%) and Jammu & Kashmir (20.6%).
A total of 11,668 convicts
accounting for 8.9% of total convicts were
undergoing sentences of 7 years - 9 +
years. The highest percentage of such
convicts was reported from Kerala
(19.0%) followed by Delhi (17.5%),

(15.3%).
6.7% of the convicts (8,805 out of
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences for
the period 5 years - 6 + years. The highest
percentage of such convicts was reported
from A & N Islands (58.1%) followed by
Kerala (24.0%), Meghalaya (17.6%), Goa
(14.5%), Delhi (13.2%) and Sikkim (13.1%).
5.1% of the convicts (6,770 out of
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences for
the period 2 years - 4 + years in various jails
in the country. Arunachal Pradesh has
reported 37.5% of such convicts followed by
A&N Islands (34.3%), Manipur (28.0%),
Kerala (14.5%), Sikkim (12.1%), Tripura
(11.8%) and Punjab (10.6%).
4.1% of the convicts (5,339 out of
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences for
the period 1 year - 2 + years. The highest
percentage of such convicts was reported
from Kerala (16%), Nagaland (11.6%),
Mizoram (10.8%) and West Bengal
(10.1%).
3.1% of the convicts (4,061 out of
1,31,517) were undergoing sentences of six
months to one year. The percentage of
such convicts was relatively high in
Mizoram (14.0%), Manipur and Meghalaya
(11.8% each), West Bengal (11.1%), Goa
(9.0%), Uttarakhand (7.9%) and
Chandigarh (7.1%).
A total of 95 persons were awarded
death penalty during 2014 in the country.
During 2014, 17 persons were awarded
such punishment in Bihar (17) followed by
Uttar Pradesh (16), Madhya Pradesh (12),
Maharashtra (9), Chhattisgarh (8) and
Gujarat, Jharkhand & Madhya Pradesh (5
each). The death sentence of 112 convicts
was commuted to life imprisonment during
the year 2014. Out of 112 convicts whose
death sentence was commuted to life
imprisonment, 18.8% were reported from
Bihar (21) followed by Delhi (19), Karnataka
(15), Maharashtra (10) and Haryana & Uttar
Pradesh (9 each). No convict awarded with
capital punishment was executed during the
year 2014. Details may be seen in (Table-
