Inmate population and Overcrowding in prisons<br />
Overcrowding is one of the biggest<br />
problems faced by good number of jails.<br />
Keeping in view the human rights of the<br />
prisons, it is essential that they are given<br />
reasonable space and facilities in jails. For<br />
this purpose, the special attention is being<br />
given on the modernisation of jails. More<br />
funds are being allocated to increase the<br />
infrastructure in jails.<br />
Occupancy rate is defined as<br />
number of inmates staying in jails against<br />
the authorized capacity for 100 inmates. In<br />
other words, if occupancy rate of any jail is<br />
100, it means the number inmates are as<br />
per authorized capacity of the jail.<br />
Overcrowding in jail means occupancy rate<br />
is more than 100.<br />
It is evident as per the information<br />
available from States/UTs regarding<br />
population of inmates in various prisons<br />
(Table 2(A)), that the prison population<br />
was satisfactorily managed during the<br />
year <strong>2014</strong> in 12 States and 5 UTs as the<br />
occupancy rate in these States/UTs<br />
