Boots people. Boots life Changing OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH BBC CHILDREN IN NE LIVES. HERE, SOME BOOTS C lives for Every single day, somewhere in the UK, the money you’ve helped to raise for BBC Children in Need is helping to improve a young person’s life. Boots’ partnership with BBC Children in Need comes down to a shared vision: working together with BBC Children in Need to change the lives of children and young people in the UK and help them reach their full potential. With your help, BBC Children in Need supports over 2,600 projects, 365 days a year. We thought it would be great to share how some of our colleagues have been experiencing first-hand how the money they raise benefits a local charity. Student Community Action (Disability), Cambridge A team of nine Boots colleagues from our Central & NI Division (Region 39 East Anglia North) visited Student Community Action (Disability) in Cambridge to help run a Christmas party for underprivileged and disabled children. The organisation encourages the involvement of students in more than 70 voluntary community projects, providing services to disadvantaged groups and giving students a valuable learning experience. A three-year grant of £21,732 from BBC Children in Need now means SCA can fund a project providing valuable befriending opportunities for young carers facing bullying, disability, isolation or economic disadvantage. Our colleagues supported this project by organising a party for 65 children who might otherwise not have any Christmas celebrations. “It felt really good to see the children enjoy themselves and their faces when Santa came in and gave them their presents. For me, this is what Christmas is about, being a part of this was a privilege.” Kay Watkinson, Area Manager – Norfolk 5951. Spark Blaenymaes, Swansea Helen Taylor, Area Manager for Central & NI (Region 52 Wales), took a team of five Boots colleagues to visit Spark Blaenymaes in April. Spark Blaenymaes is a charity based in the heart of Blaenymaes. Their aim is to help empower local people to reach their full potential. They have four main projects at Spark to work with the community – Let’s Play work with families who have children aged from 0 to 4 years old, Kids Club is an out of school open access play provision for children aged between 5 and 11 years old, Youth Project provides activities and projects for young people aged between 11 and 25 years old, and Community Education works with the local community to provide a diverse range of opportunities for both personal and community development. They received £98,787 from BBC Children in Need for a project that will improve the lives of young people suffering the effects of extreme poverty. They’re doing this by providing a programme of diverse opportunities that will engage them to learn new skills and promote a positive influence in their community. “Thank you so much for arranging the visit for us; it was really great to see how the money is spent, and what a huge difference it can make! The team leading the project were really enthusiastic, and what they are trying to achieve was well articulated. “We identified a few possibilities going forward and will now establish the best way of us working together. Some very quick wins might be to arrange a session with some of our beauty (cosmetics/skincare) consultants, or even healthcare advisors to talk about personal hygiene. Pharmacists could even talk about what it’s like to be a pharmacist.” Helen Taylor, Area Manager – Central & NI Region 52. 26

It felt really good to see the children enjoy themselves Kay Watkinson, Area Manager – Norfolk 5951 The Calman Trust, Inverness Three colleagues from our North Division (Region 25 North of Scotland) headed for the Highlands to see the work of the Calman Trust first-hand. The Trust offers housing support, training and employment opportunities to young people seeking independent living. A BBC Children in Need grant of £75,392 is being used to provide homeless young people with the tools to plan and cook basic meals, helping them lead a healthier lifestyle and develop both personal and social skills. “We really did get a lot out of the visit; we met some of the young people in a cooking class and joined them for lunch.” Samantha Gauld, Store Manager, Store 6598 Elgin EOT. a real feeling of community Danny Thomas, Store Manager – Inverness 6441 “Our host, Isobel, walked and talked us through how the funding worked to benefit the young people coming through the doors.
