I have lost count of the times I have travelled to India but for uninitiated overseas artists for whom the country’s sensory overload can be confronting and confusing, Art Ichol’s caring and reassuring environment will be especially welcome. Working with Indian textiles was one of those things that just happened in my life without much forethought or planning and my original art training was in sculpture and photography. With the excellent facilities at Art Ichol for welding, casting and carving it is high time, Ambica told me, to get down and get dirty again with clay, stone and iron. It’s tempting, really tempting - but those photographers managed to get under my skin and I know I have to cure that bout of camera (and skill) envy. When I get back to Maihar, it will be clutching a really good digital SLR camera and hopefully, a sufficiently proficient skill set to produce something far more pictorially eloquent and evocative than I did with that iPhone. May it come soon.
