Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, the trainee nurse will be able to:
Define cancer and describe the process of carcinogenesis;
Explain the function of various cells and mediators involved in the immune response;
Identify physical, chemical, and viral carcinogens and the role of immune surveillance
and genetic predisposition in the development of cancer;
Describe the characteristics of cancer cells, including the role and clinical applications
of tumor markers;
Define tumor nomenclature and staging;
Describe how the concept of cancer biology is used to provide optimal nursing care to
cancer patients and their families.
Appreciate how an understanding of cancer biology and carcinogenesis enhances the
professional development of oncology nurses.
