<strong>Program</strong>s!<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Association (DRA) is a not-for-profit<br />

charitable organization with the mission of building a healthy,<br />

active and engaged community through recreation. While we are<br />

part of the City of Ottawa’s recreation system, DRA is empowered<br />

to choose what programs it runs to meet the community’s needs,<br />

and how those programs are delivered. Our motto is “a community<br />

working for the community, une communauté qui travaille pour la<br />

communauté”. Staff, volunteers, clients, local community groups<br />

and businesses working together…that’s <strong>Dovercourt</strong>!<br />

Ward<br />

Kitchissippi is a vibrant, active and cooperative ward, due in no small<br />

part to the vital role that our community centres play in bringing<br />

together neighbours and neighbourhoods. <strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation<br />

Centre continues to be a hub for the community and an important<br />

space for building connections and having those meaningful<br />

interactions that guide and shape our exciting ward. The strength of<br />

Kitchissippi can be found in our communities.<br />

As councillor for Kitchissippi I am very proud of the role that<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Association serves in our ward and of<br />

the unique relationship that it represents between the city and<br />

community.<br />

Le quartier Kitchissippi est un quartier actif et dynamique, où les gens<br />

collaborent, et ce, en bonne partie grâce au rôle vital que jouent nos<br />

centres communautaires dans le rapprochement entre les voisins et<br />

les voisinages. Le Centre récréatif <strong>Dovercourt</strong> demeure un carrefour<br />

communautaire et un lieu important pour ce qui est de nouer des<br />

liens et de susciter des interactions significatives qui guident et<br />

façonnent notre passionnant quartier. Ce sont nos communautés qui<br />

font la force de Kitchissippi.<br />

En qualité de conseiller de Kitchissippi, je suis très fier du rôle que le<br />

association récréatif <strong>Dovercourt</strong> joue dans notre quartier et des liens<br />

uniques qu’il contribue à tisser entre la Ville et la communauté.<br />

Preschool swim lessons<br />

The Swim For Life®<br />

<strong>Program</strong><br />

Basic swimming ability is a requirement<br />

of any meaningful attempt to eliminate<br />

drowning in Canada. Swim for Life®<br />

is a comprehensive swim instruction<br />

program that focuses on the acquisition<br />

and development of fundamental swim<br />

strokes and skills for learners of all ages and<br />

abilities. Learning Swim to Survive® skills<br />

and achieving the Lifesaving Society’s Swim<br />

to Survive® Standard are key foundations<br />

of the Swim for Life® <strong>Program</strong>.<br />

Lifesaving Parent &<br />

Tots<br />

A rewarding experience for adults with<br />

infants or toddlers. These levels introduce<br />

the joys of water activity while stressing<br />

parental responsibility in, on and around<br />

the water. Parent participation required, but<br />

just one “water loving” parent is permitted<br />

in the pool due to our limited pool space.<br />

Class length: 30 minutes.<br />

12 months old and under (able to hold head<br />

up) with parent or caregiver.<br />

Parent & Tot 2<br />

24 months old and under with parent or<br />

Preschool A Transition<br />

Your child is “almost” ready for<br />

independence or almost 3 years old.<br />

Parents must join their preschooler in the<br />

water until the child is ready to participate<br />

on their own and they are 3 years old.<br />

Preschool classes<br />

All Preschool classes are<br />

unparented and for 3-5 year old<br />

children.<br />

Preschool A<br />

Prerequisites: For kids 3-5 years old just<br />

starting out on their own, with little or<br />

no experience but comfortable in a class<br />

without mom or dad.<br />

Preschool B<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can comfortably<br />

move and float with aid and put their faces<br />

in the water with eyes open and exhale in a<br />

relaxed manner.<br />

Preschool C<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can float on front<br />

and back in PFD without assistance; swim<br />

5m on front and back any way with an aid;<br />

and exhale under water 3 times without<br />

pause.<br />

Preschool D<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can float and<br />

move in deep water with assistance;<br />

breathe rhythmically 5 times; flutter kick<br />

while gliding on front and back 5m; recover<br />

objects from the bottom.<br />

Preschool E<br />

Prerequisites: Participants are comfortable<br />

jumping into deep water unassisted; front<br />

and back float in deep water unassisted;<br />

kick on front and back for 7m each; 5m of<br />

continuous front crawl with aid.<br />

WHY TAKE SWIMMING<br />

LESSONS AT DOVERCOURT?<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s highly-skilled instructors<br />

are able to teach children proper<br />

technique efficiently and effectively,<br />

in accordance with the high standards<br />

of the Lifesaving Society. Our endof-session<br />

Survival Day is unique to<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> and is a fun yet powerful<br />

way to teach children skills that could<br />

save their lives in real-life scenarios.<br />

Our staff undergo extensive training<br />

and regular updates on safety,<br />

rescue situations, changes to current<br />

standards, as well as techniques for<br />

teaching. Many of our senior aquatics<br />

staff are instructor and lifeguard trainers<br />

and are a valuable resource for our<br />

aquatics team. Our leisure pool is<br />

designed to teach swimming, with<br />

unique features like warmer water, a<br />

beach entry, rope swing and shallow &<br />

deep water pods. We are proud of the<br />

quality of our swim lesson program at<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>!


SCHOOL AGE swim lessons<br />

Swimmer 1 - Beginner<br />

Just starting out with little or no swimming<br />

experience. Lessons will focus on floats and<br />

glides, flutter kick, shallow and deep-water<br />

comfort, movement through water, safe<br />

entries and PFDs.<br />

Swimmer 1 - Advanced<br />

Prerequisites: Have attempted Swimmer 1<br />

before and/or are comfortable submerging<br />

their face with eyes open. Class will focus<br />

on unassisted glides and kicking drills.<br />

Swimmer 2<br />

Prerequisites: Jump into chest deep water;<br />

open eyes and exhale under water; front/<br />

back float unassisted; flutter kick on front/<br />

back for 5m each.<br />

Swimmer 2 & 3<br />

Prerequisites: Swimmer 2: Jump into chest<br />

deep water; open eyes and exhale under<br />

water; front/back float unassisted; kicking<br />

on front/back for 5m each. Swimmer 3:<br />

Jump into deep water; front/back swim<br />

10m each; front and back crawl 10m;<br />

tread water 15 seconds.<br />

Swimmer 3<br />

Prerequisites: Jump into deep water;<br />

flutter kick on side; swim front and back<br />

crawl 10m continuously; tread water<br />

15 seconds.<br />

Swimmer 3 & 4<br />

Prerequisites: Swimmer 3: Jump into deep<br />

water; front/back swim 10m each; flutter<br />

kick on side; swim front and back crawl<br />

10m continuously; tread water 15 seconds.<br />

Swimmer 4: Dive and roll into deep water;<br />

front/back crawl 15m each; whip kick on<br />

back 10m; tread water 30 seconds.<br />

Prerequisites: Dive and roll into deep water;<br />

Swimmer 5 & 6<br />

Prerequisites: Swimmer 5: Tread<br />

15m. Swimmer 6: Shallow dive; eggbeater<br />

kick 30 seconds; front/back crawl &<br />

breaststroke 50m each; 200m interval swim<br />

head up front crawl 10m.<br />

Rookie, Ranger, Star<br />

Patrol (7/8/9)<br />

Rookie: Prerequisites: Compact jump; stride<br />

entry, eggbeater 75 seconds; head up front<br />

crawl or breaststroke 25m; front/back crawl<br />

& breaststroke 100m each; 300m endurance<br />

swim.<br />

Ranger: Prerequisites: Lifesaving kick 25m,<br />

endurance 350m; timed swim 100m in 3<br />

minutes.<br />

Star Patrol: Demands good physical<br />

conditioning and lifesaving judgment.<br />

Participants develop lifesaving and first aid<br />

skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl<br />

and breaststroke over 100m each, and<br />

complete 600m workouts and 300m timed<br />

swims.<br />

Fitness Swimmer<br />

10-14yrs<br />

For swimmers of all ages who are looking for<br />

a break from regular lessons or are looking to<br />

improve their endurance and overall physical<br />

fitness in the water. Class prerequisite:<br />

completed Swimmer 5, ages 10-14.<br />

RECITAL<br />

The annual <strong>Dovercourt</strong> Dance Recital is<br />

the highlight of our dance year! It will take<br />

place on Sat. June 18, <strong>2016</strong> at the Notre<br />

Dame High School Auditorium. The session<br />

fee includes the class (January to June<br />

<strong>2016</strong>), recital registration and costume.<br />

Recital tickets go on sale in May. There will<br />

be a dress rehearsal on the morning of the<br />

recital at Notre Dame. Professional photos<br />

will be taken and will be available for<br />

Private lessons provide the most impactful<br />

experience in music education. Our teachers<br />

are equipped to prepare students for both<br />

formal musical examinations, and casual<br />

play with friends and family. BSOMA offers<br />

private lessons in a variety of instruments and<br />

art mediums. They are offered year round<br />

and sign up is available at any time.<br />

Private lessons are $93 for four 30 min<br />

sessions. Semi-Private Lessons (2 or<br />

3 students at the same time) are $73<br />

Dog Training Basics<br />

(Level 1 Beginner)<br />

Positive reinforcement training for dogs of<br />

all ages. Have fun teaching your dog the<br />

come, walk on a loose leash, etc. Focus is on<br />

developing a safe, well socialized pet and<br />

a happy home environment. If obedience<br />

competition is your goal, this class is your first<br />

NEW ONLINE Registration<br />

From December 3, 2015 onwards,<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> clients will be using a new<br />

and improved online registration system!<br />

Features of our new system:<br />

• easier ‘Search’ for courses and camps<br />

• more courses/classes available to book online (even<br />

more coming in <strong>2016</strong>)<br />

• purchase or renew a pass online (Gold club, Group<br />

Fitness, Pool passes)<br />

• pay outstanding account balances<br />

• link to social media straight from your account<br />

Here’s what you need to know:<br />

The web address is: dovercourt.org<br />

Username: the email address that is registered<br />

to your account<br />

Password: same as your existing client ID<br />

Existing clients can use the email address that is<br />

registered to their original <strong>Dovercourt</strong> online account<br />

and their original client ID. If the password does not<br />

work, click the ‘Reset My Password’ link to reset it<br />

(remember to check your Junk Folder). If the email does<br />

not work please set up a new account, or email online@<br />

dovercourt.org, with your full name and phone number,<br />

and we will get back to you promptly.<br />

Your new account will not show your account history,<br />

but it should have your family members linked to your<br />
