Compliments of Sue Grossman, of Sue's Massage Activated Charcoal By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom One of the things I will never leave without when going away on vacation or business (especially out of the country) is activated charcoal. I have used it to treat food poisoning, indigestion, and prevent and treat hangovers. It’s a natural substances mother nature gave us to help rid of toxins trapped in our body. Activated charcoal is nothing like the chemical filled charcoal purchased for the grill. Activated charcoal is a fine, black powder that is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. It is often used in high doses in emergency rooms to treat accidental poisoning. Activated charcoal is estimated to reduce absorption of poisonous substances up to 60%. It works by adsorbing chemicals, thus reducing their toxicity, through the entire length of the stomach and GI tract. In other words, the toxins bind to the charcoal and are carried out of the body. Activated charcoal is often given after the stomach is pumped at hospitals. Stomach pumping is only effective immediately after swallowing a toxic substance (within about one-half hour) and does not have effects that reach beyond the stomach as activated charcoal does. Activated charcoal can be used to naturally whiten teeth. Sprinkle a small amount on your toothbrush and brush 2-3 times a week. Do not use if you have veneers or crowns as it could stain them. To help prevent a hangover take 2 capsules before or after a night of drinking with a glass of water. More may be taken but start with 2. To alleviate gas or bloating from a meal take 2 capsules with a glass of water before and drink another glass of water after the meal. If you suspect food poisoning take up to 5 capsules with plenty of water. It’s very important to drink water throughout the day to help the activated charcoal do its job. In case of accidental ingestion of a poisonous substance call poison control center immediately and tell them you have activated charcoal on hand. They will advice how much to use. Activated charcoal is also excellent for the treatment of spider bites and acne. For spider bites mix with coconut oil, apply on bite and bandage it. Reapply every couple hours. For acne mix a little with aloe vera gel and apply all over face as a mask, let dry and rinse off. It may also be used as a spot treatment. The activated charcoal binds with environmental toxins and dirt that contribute to acne. Other uses for activated charcoal include lowering high cholesterol, using as a detox, mold cleansing, and water filtration. Be careful with furniture, grout, and other porous surfaces when using as it stains everything. Take 3 hours prior or between taking mediation and other supplements as it will adsorb and prevent the body from absorbing it.
