Needham Community Education
Dear Community Members,
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Happy New Year! And welcome to the winter/spring 2012 Adult Programs catalog, and
our NEW LOOK! We hope you like it as much as we do! Along with a new look, we have a brand new way of
organizing our programs – check out the inside back cover for an outline of all of the programs
that make up Needham Community Education!
Needham Adult Education Students Give High Marks to Our Teachers…Our teachers are
knowledgeable, enthusiastic, personable, and thoroughly enjoy teaching their courses. On class evaluations this past
term, the overall average score for teachers was 4.86, with 5 being the highest rating. And, many of the teachers
received all 5’s from their students! Try us out – and we bet you’ll see why students are so positive about their
experience in our classes.
Needham Adult Education Teachers Praise You, Their Students…Our teachers repeatedly tell us
how much they enjoy teaching for our program – and particularly how much they enjoy the students in their classes.
Comments such as “what a great group of people!” and “the class developed such a bond” are common. And, our
students frequently comment on how much they enjoyed their fellow classmates!
We Are So Sure You Will Enjoy Our Classes... that we will be happy to refund the course fee if you are
not satisfied with a class you choose (for multi-session classes only). We only ask that you contact us before the
second class session to let us know what about the class did not meet your expectations. This will help us continue
to improve the quality of our offerings and the clarity of the course descriptions.
Register Soon…to avoid disappointment – many of our classes have enrollment limits, and the POPULAR
classes fill quickly! Please see page 4 for the 4 Easy Ways to Register.
See you in class!
HOW CHORES EMPOWER FAMILIES
Co-Sponsored by the Needham Women’s Club
Susan Tordella, Presenter
Sweeping the floor, emptying the dishwasher, and
caring for pets can teach children the priceless gift
of self-discipline. The author of Raising Able: How
Chores Empower Families, will share how to use
encouragement and family meetings to engage totsto-teens
in teamwork, connect to each other, and
have fun. Be ready to laugh as you learn how positive
discipline can motivate your family to pitch in together
without begging, berating, or bribery. Motivation
from doing chores establishes good habits for life.
Susan Tordella, M.A., has taught positive parenting to
scores of parents. Her four children, now ages 23-
BEGINNING BEEKEEPING NEW
Pat Canavan, Instructor
It’s as easy as gardening, gets you outdoors in a new
way, helps local flowers and gardens AND provides
you with locally produced honey – it’s no wonder
that backyard beekeeping has become so popular!
And, many beekeepers report the almost magical
experience of tending the bees. You will learn all
about bees and beekeeping, including bee biology,
required equipment, setting up beehives, acquiring
and installing bees, managing bees throughout the
seasons, and local bee supply dealers. The course
will culminate in one field session on a Saturday
off-site in Newton (weather permitting) working with
live honeybees. The book Beekeeping for Dummies
by Howland Blackiston (ISBN #978-0764554193) is
DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS
Denise Driscoll, Instructor
This class will be geared for beginners and will focus
large-scale environment, self-portrait, and the figure.
While drawing from observation will be our main focus,
abstract possibilities such as conveying mood and
movement through line will also be explored. Classes
will combine short exercises introducing skills and
concepts with longer, more individualized drawing
opportunities. A materials list will be posted on the
MAXIMIZE YOUR COLLEGE
FINANCIAL AID
Donald Anderson, College Funding Advisors, Inc.,
Instructor
This one-night workshop is a must for all parents of
college-bound high school students, especially freshmen
and sophomores. We will demystify the college financial
aid process and teach you how to access the more than
$90 billion in financial aid dollars, monies that are even
available to “high income” families and business owners.
Strategies will be presented that will help you protect your
assets by maximizing your eligibility for aid, effectively
lowering your college costs. You will learn the optimum
time to set the strategies in place (best before the junior
year) and why, if you wait until the financial aid deadline to
file your forms, you may miss out on the full amount of aid
for which you qualify. You will also learn how to minimize
the equity in your home. A free comprehensive analysis
will be provided for those attending the class.
