service authority For Freeway eMergencies (saFe)<br />

The Los Angeles County Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies (SAFE) was established in<br />

Los Angeles County in 1988. SAFE is a separate legal authority created under state law and is<br />

responsible for providing motorist aid services in Los Angeles County. SAFE currently operates,<br />

manages and/or funds:<br />

> The Los Angeles County Kenneth Hahn Call Box System<br />

> 511 – Mobile Call Box program<br />

> The Metro Freeway Service Patrol<br />

> The Motorist Aid and Traveler Information System (MATIS)<br />

SAFE receives its funding from a dedicated $1 surcharge assessed on each vehicle registered<br />

within Los Angeles County.<br />
