Bloodwise 18 STRATEGIC REPORT 1. THE BIGGEST KILLERS We now have a clear understanding of the conditions that have the biggest impact on lives lost. Our evidence has identified just five conditions that account for 69% of all lives lost within five years of diagnosis: ›› myeloma ›› diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) ›› acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) ›› myelodsyplastic syndromes (MDS) ›› chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Bloodwise 19 STRATEGIC REPORT 2. PRE-MALIGNANT CONDITIONS The understanding and treatment of pre-malignant conditions may help prevent some of the cases of the biggest killers from occurring. Some MDS cases progress to (AML) and all cases of myeloma arise from a condition known as monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS). If we include the precursor conditions, we find that just six conditions account for 73% of total lives lost in the five years after diagnosis. 3. EARLY DEATHS Analysing relative survival rates has shown us that for certain conditions, such as AML and DLBCL, half of the deaths occur within the first three months after diagnosis. This is a complex area – it could be that these cases represent the more vulnerable patients or those with the most aggressive hard-totreat forms of the disease, or it could be that we’re not diagnosing a significant group of patients early enough. Data from the National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN) for example shows that over half of AML patients are diagnosed in A&E – more than double the rate for cancer patients overall. 4. CRISIS IN AWARENESS Our research has shown there’s low awareness of blood cancer and its symptoms amongst the general public – many patients being diagnosed with blood cancer have no pre-awareness or understanding of the disease they face. Symptoms are often vague and easily confused with relatively benign illnesses or old age, and many conditions are relatively rare as individual diseases. 5. BLOOD <strong>CANCER</strong>S ARE DIFFERENT Patients and carers told us they feel blood cancers differ to other cancers in terms of awareness, experience, care and available provision. This could be for a variety of reasons. We know that services are available, but some blood cancer patients don’t know about them or see them as relevant. Another factor might be that many blood cancer patients are seen in a haematology unit, whereas other cancer patients will go to oncology. These differences in experiences, treatment and care can leave some patients feeling isolated from certain cancer services and feeling unsure about whether such services are relevant to their needs.
