But over the last five years we’ve also been going through significant change – centred on how we can improve the outcomes and experiences of people affected by blood cancer. We’ve already begun to stretch our sphere of influence beyond the research community. We’ve also responded to our growing understanding of patient need by developing our patient information and support offering, enhancing our patient and carer experience digitally and engaging more robustly with the clinical community. Our patient experience team have been supporting our programme of patient need research, creating a safe space for focus groups and one to one conversations with patients to help gain the primary patient qualitative data. At the same time they’ve been developing closer relationships with the clinical community, ensuring that we have expert voices to help us understand issues raised by patients. This has involved setting up a Medical Advisory Panel and a Nursing Advisory Panel to ensure we have a forum to seek expert opinion and advice. Building these relationships with patients and the clinical community has already resulted in a visible difference in the level of interaction we have, through the volume of patient information that we send out; the hits to our patient web pages; the comments on Facebook and the number of blogs that patients contribute to share their experiences. Until now, our patient experience activities have sat within the marketing directorate. Our Marketing Director, Emma Whelan, has done an incredible job growing and developing a hugely diverse directorate, while creating a vision for patients. It’s very much thanks to her work and our planned responses to our patient need research that we’ve decided to set up a new, separate patient services directorate. We’ll be welcoming our first ever Patient Experience Director in July, Diana Jupp, who has 18 years of experience working with patients at Breast Cancer Care in July 2015. Bloodwise 25 STRATEGIC REPORT GOAL 2 Achieve a step change in income This has been a year where the success in the smaller gift areas of our fundraising has been sharply contrasted with real challenges in corporate, trusts and major gifts. London|Paris Our sports events team delivered another spectacular year, with a record number of participants and record funds raised at the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Blenheim Palace Triathlon. The second year of our London to Paris cycling event also saw substantial growth and also offers an important engagement opportunity with corporate audiences. Paws to beat blood cancer We have great strength in local engagement and fundraising, very much thanks to the efforts of our voluntary fundraising Branches and our energetic regional team. During the year Blackpool, Derbyshire and Brentwood, Billericay and Hutton Branches celebrated an incredible 50 years of fundraising; our Lutterworth and Grimsby Branches celebrated raising their first £1 million; and the final Tredegar House Vintage Car Rally organised by our Gwent Branch raised an unprecedented £90,000. We’ve begun to develop some more proactive approaches to individual giving, introducing both a Christmas appeal and a longer term approach in the shape of two very sensitive legacy events in beautiful locations, which gave the opportunity for quiet reflection and to meet others affected by blood cancer. Blenheim Palace Triathon The drop in income came from our larger gift income streams, although within this there continued to be some successes.
