In the latter case, the infant tires, makes no ef<strong>for</strong>t, and receives the<br />

decreased target tidal volume. In this case, the weaning process is<br />

interrupted, and we return to the previous target tidal volume. To validate<br />

this hypothesis of »automatic« weaning, we studied 4 newborn infants and<br />

observed a progressive decrease in pressure support. These infants were<br />

extubated successfully at the end of this process. However, this result must<br />

be confirmed by further clinical studies.<br />
